Zaff is a NPC who owns Zaff's Superior Staves in the city of Varrock. He is located in his shop just north-west of Varrock centre. He is often visited because he is one of the only NPCs that sells Battlestaffs, the other being Baba Yaga on Lunar Isle. He is also heavily integrated in the What Lies Below quest. During the quest, you can summon him by using a beacon ring and Zaff's instructions.
Zaff sells noted battlestaves for 7,000 coins each, which is nearly always cheaper than the Grand Exchange price of battlestaves. Players can make a profit if they buy Battlestaves from Zaff and then afterwards, selling it in the Grand Exchange. Depending on the level of Varrock armour the player is wearing, he will sell the player a certain number of battlestaves daily (updating at midnight GMT), up to 64 with Varrock armour 3.
Zaff is secretly a member of the Varrock Palace Guard (likely accounting for his shop's proximity to it), known to Rat Burgiss, and it appears his proficiency at magic is far higher than many would presume, as it was he who possessed the Beacon and used a spell to counter Surok's mind control spell, disabling Surok's teleportation magic and imprisoning him in the library.
[edit] Trivia
- The update to remove member's only options from free-to-play NPCs on 27 May 2009 also accidentally removed all of Zaff's options except "Examine".
- In late September 2009 players discovered a glitch where they could summon Zaff in places where they are not normally able to.
- When you ask to purchase battlestaffs, Zaff asks how many you want. If you say "0", he'll take on a puzzled expression and say, "Um... right."
