Yak/Strategies

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

< Yak
The following lists strategies for killing yaks and managing their drops. For the monster, see Yak.

Yaks are very weak monsters with high hitpoints, making them the ideal monster for low to medium levelled players to train ranged and melee on. Magic can be trained on other monsters with better drops, as each cast is expensive. Their combat stats are similar to those of rock crabs, however they always drop hair and yak-hide, which are used in crafting.

To access the yak pen players must have completed The Fremennik Trials and started The Fremennik Isles. It is located extremely close to a bank.

[edit] Melee Training

It is easy to kill yaks with melee since they have almost no defence and accuracy.

[edit] Requirements

  • 40+ melee-based combat level is recommended, however 30 can work.

[edit] Equipment

Using special attacks are recommended when training as it can boost your rate of kill and gives faster experience. If your primary weapon happens to have an unfavourable special attack, don't hesitate to bring a secondary weapon such as a Dragon dagger or a Dragon battleaxe. The dragon dagger may kill your target quickly and the dragon battleaxe will boost your strength allowing you to hit higher.

[edit] Ranged Training

Yaks are sometimes known for their godly ranged experience. Most of the time, there are so many people and yaks there that a ranger can rely on them to make a temporary safe spot.

[edit] Managing Drops

Yaks drop hair, yak-hide, raw yak meat, and bones 100% of the time, and will NEVER drop anything else. Therefore, a ring of wealth is useless here.

There are many things you can do with the drops, depending on your needs for experience or money.

[edit] Crafting and Magic

[edit] Most Experience

Inventory should include coins, needle, and lots of thread. Pick up all yak hides and hair, and do the following: cure yak hides with Thakkrad Sigmundson, use needle on cured hides to make Yak-hide armour (legs), and spin hair into rope. Bank the resulting items, and continue fighting yaks.

Later, cast high alchemy on all of the yak hide legs and sell the ropes.

This gives lots of crafting experience and less combat and magic experience.

[edit] Partial Experience

Inventory should include coins, needle, and lots of thread. Pick up all yak hides only, cure them, and make them into leg armour. Bank them and high alch them later.

This gives some crafting experience and a little more combat and magic experience.

[edit] Money

[edit] Most Money

Inventory should include coins. Pick up all hair, yak hide, and bones, and cure the yak hides. Bank everything and sell them at the Grand Exchange later.

Note that hair and cured yak hide may not sell very quickly, so this method is risky.

This gives some combat experience and money.

[edit] Less Money, More Training

Pick up bones and bank them. Sell them in the grand exchange later.

This gives a little money and more combat experience.

[edit] Combat

Just kill yaks and pick up nothing. You'll never have to bank and can spend all of your time training combat.

This gives the most combat experience and nothing else.

[edit] Prayer

In addition to everything you can do listed before, you can train prayer by picking up and burying bones. This slows down combat training, however.

This gives a little prayer experience and less combat experience.

[edit] Cooking

Inventory should include a tinderbox and any kind of logs. Pick up raw yak meat, light a fire when you have a full inventory of meat, and cook all the raw yak meat. Eat it, drop it, or bank it.

This gives some cooking and combat experience.
