Wilderness Volcano
From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape
- This article is about the original location of the Bounty Hunter minigame. For the minigame itself, see Bounty Hunter.
The Wilderness Volcano (formerly called the Bounty Hunter crater[1]) is a large volcano situated in the centre of the Wilderness. According to Mandrith, the volcano was formed as a scar on the land of Gielinor, as it was the site where the very first murder took place. The volcano's crater is now home to many monsters, consisting of ankou, skeletons, hellhounds, greater demons and lesser demons[2].
The crater is useful for Slayer tasks, or to kill Hellhounds to obtain Level 3 clue scrolls. Be warned however, as revenants are able to access the crater. It is possible to safe-spot some monsters by using the various obstacles scattered around the crater; however, this is not recommended. Players often call the volcano the 'wildy volc' for short.
There is a travelling banker named Maximillian Sackville located in a non-wilderness area near the south-eastern entrance to the crater. This provides a useful safe haven in the heart of the wilderness where players can resupply while fighting the monsters in the crater and other nearby creatures such as the Black Unicorns located to the south-west.
Edmond the capes salesman can be found to the north-west of the crater, but may sometimes wander inside the crater.

[edit] Getting there
The fastest way to access the crater is through the use of a games necklace teleport, or to take a canoe to the wilderness pond then use one of the northern entrances. The crater is a short distance away from Clan Wars and Stealing Creation, so is often used as a way-point when travelling to these locations.
For free-to-play players, it is best to use the Earth altar teleport, and run up to the Wilderness, then use the south-eastern entrance. For players who do not have 50 Runecrafting, it is best to use the Varrock Teleport spell, run up to the Wilderness, then use the same entrance.
[edit] History
The volcano was originally used as the location of the Bounty Hunter minigame, and as such was named Bounty Hunter Volcano. Mandrith, who was located near the banker at the south eastern entrance was the custodian of the crater. He would provide information on the minigame for newer players, and would also discuss the history of the volcano.
The volcano was originally divided into three craters, each with its own entrance. The craters were designated for low, medium and high level players. All three entrances were located near Mandrith.
Outside the entrances also featured two large scoreboards, one featuring the high scores for Bounty Hunter, and the other for Bounty Hunter Rogues.
[edit] Closure
Eventually, with the release of Bounty Hunter Worlds, the crater become redundant as the new Bounty Hunter was to take place over the entire wilderness. According to Mandrith, during this time, the volcano had erupted, which is why his tribe saw fit to close it for the time being. He claimed once things had settled down, they would rebuild the craters for a new purpose.
[edit] Reopening
Eventually, the crater opened again with the Changes to PvP and Bounty Worlds, and gravestones update on 16 June 2009[1]. The eruption would appear to have carved three new entrances into each edge of the volcano, and attracted several types of monsters. This also resulted in Mandrith leaving his post as custodian of the volcano, in favour of attending to the new Bounty Hunter Worlds.
[edit] Trivia
- There was no music playing in the volcano when it was reopened. This was fixed in the Extended Agility courses update on 22 June, 2009.
- This is the only place where free players can kill hellhounds
- Inside the Wilderness Volcano crater, there is a winged skeleton that has examine text "Could this have been one of the ancient Dragonkin?".
- Despite being in the Wilderness, Revenants do not patrol through the Wilderness Volcano, however, they can still follow a player into it. As a result, the area near southern-east exit is relatively safe and can be considered an ideal place fighting ankous and greater demons, though danger might arise if someone leads a revenant near this area, which is very rare.
