Protect site.

We were hit by CS, only this time he ran his bot. Uberfuzzy protected the site. =\ 13:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes, we were hit again, this time by a vandal bot. I logged on yesterday for the first time that day, as it was my b-day and was busy, and began reading my messages and looking for updates to the Yew Grove. I then checked the recent changes and there were a string of articles called "Shit#####", the ##### being an integer that increased in value my 1 which would then create a new article over. The bot also appeared to be targeting random mainspace articles as well, so as I cannot delete articles, no sysops powers, I began to revert the vandal to the other articles. During this time I logged on to Runescape and contacted any sysops that were logged on at the time, as I have most added to my friends list, in such this case. Kytti Khat was on so I told her in a rather quick manner, "Mass Vandal<need help" and she logged off and came over to help. When I finished talking with her there were 3 other accounts created that were being used, so as his others were blocked he made more and applied the bot to them. I wrote on Kytti Khat's talk page and told her to issue a site block, which on was issued, but not by her, by Uberfuzzy. I later got a message from Kytti saying she does not know how to issue a site block, which only means that your proposed policy needs to become a policy soon if we are being attacked by vandal bots. On the lighter side, I was really the only one at that time who appeared to be on and active, which leads me to believe he might try to activate his bot at night in most cases. It's gonna suck if I am always logged on a night for a majority, and can't edit during my on time due to a site protection, or in this case as being the first to respond, issue the protection. Anyways, the protection allowed Kytti and Uberfuzzy to remove most of the vandalism. I think Uberfuzzy made himself a Vandal removing bot, as he changed his account membership to include bots and quickly removed most of the hit pages. That is the just, ask away if you have any more questions.

What I missed

It looks like I missed a lot of happenings here. I think I should write me an anti-vandal bot.(This is where the MediaWiki/Wikia API comes in handy). - TehKittyCat^{Talk Wikian-Book} 23:29, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Progress on the bot: I just started, I was going to try out a different bot framework, but I decided I best go with what I have used and know. I updated my copy of the runescape_family.py file(It basically holds all of the settings the bot framework needs to know about the wiki) and I made it where it can be used on every other language of RSWiki as long as the name-spaces are translated. My bot is able to login now. I am still thinking of how it will work. I may need to have my bot given roll-back, although I am not sure and if I couldn't I am sure I could work around it, since I have never tried roll-back with a bot. The bot should read the list of all contributions(within last 24 hours) by the offender and use roll-back except with a custom edit summary and also mark the vandal's edits as bot edits to hide them(I think I can but I haven't tried I know roll-back on Wikipedia can supposedly). To stop the bot we would use an emergency stop button, which would ban the bot for the shortest time possible, which would turn off the bot automatically. Thanks, now I am thinking maybe a script or writing/finding a wiki extension would be better. I would just need to get my slightly started wiki install done. Do you have a tool that allows you to mass rollback a user's edits? Such a tool would be great for this I think and would not be dependant on any bot or anything like that, the only issue would be getting Wikia to install it and I am sure they would look into it. - TehKittyCat^{Talk Wikian-Book} 02:05, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

From what I have seen in the Wikia source code I didn't see one and there is none in the MediaWiki extensions repository. Right now I am building up a Wikia wiki on my computer by guess work, fun though. :D Then I can start learning how to write extensions. - TehKittyCat^{Talk Wikian-Book} 02:46, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Harsh?

Hello there. I have been recently monitoring the recent changes and have noticed all the users you have been blocking. Now, this may be just my opinion, but I think you are being to harsh. A fine example is IP adress 75.100.30.63, who made an edit on Exchange:Dark cavalier. I saw the edit, and at first glance it looks like vandalism, that is, if you only glance. Has it come to your mind that maybe 75.100.30.63 was having connection problems, and did not intentionally do it? Or possibly more likley it was a rather newer one and wasn't sure how do correctly update an exchange price? You must assume good faith more often. Like Exchange:Green d'hide body, the IP made a small mistake in the price and put 4588 instead of 4558. A common mistake the human mind makes, and, would you have blocked the user just for that? I'm not saying you would, but you must assume good faith, unless it was obvious vandalism of course. Happy editing. --— Enigma 23:45, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

It is true they changed 28k to 300k, but notice how close 30k is to 28k, and how possible it is to add an extra zero an accident. I don't think that's bad enough to earn a block, at all. If the IP went around changing multiple prices dramaticly, that would be a block. BUt I just don't think it was right to block the IP. --— Enigma 23:51, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

When I saw the recent changes, I thought the same happened with Ben's bot (Do you know who Ben is?), in which there was a fault in the programming and it went around tagging the wrong pages with image templates. Chiafriend12 04:15, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, on a bright note I am fixing every broken user signature on the wiki. Not making (x)html compliant, just making it work correctly so closer to compliant at least. Although the changing of signatures, user pages, and user talk might be an issue to some. I'm not fighting to get my post back or anything, but I have a question that I'd like to have answered: what was so bad about my post that it made you have to delete it? I was not advising the maker of the thread to intentionally attack anyone; rather, I was advising him to be ready for an attack once he dumped his girlfriend for that other girl. gif to png

Do you know if it is possible to replace a gif image with a png one over the top or do i have to upload the png version then put the speedy deletion tag on the gif one and manually replace all the images?? ^{User talk} Evil Yanks ^Contribs 09:54, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Is it possible to replace a GIF with a PNG, just changing the file extension? In any case, you would still have to edit each page where the image is used, to reflect the change. I had assumed I would have to upload the PNG as a new file, then delete the GIF, which is what I have been doing. Global Signatures

I have figured out some code to allow Wikia-wide signatures and it works out for wikis that forbid user signatures. Basically, the code works by when you post if you have a signature template on the wiki it posts it, and if you do not have one, instead it puts the default signature(except with ^Talk added).

The code:

Hey Soldier. I've been gone about 3/4 of a month and I come back and see that you and Bonz have gained nearly double your previous edit counts! Yeah, I think a lot of us know it well by now, as apparently everybody at his school is out to get him by vandalising the RSW. I ignore it, and block it because it vandalises. Just because it's shared does not exclude the IP from the rules. 16:45, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Look at what he has done of anyone should get in trouble it should be him. I will not tolerate any user on the wiki get put down by some kid who flames anyone who disagrees with him on sight.
