Glancing through recent changes, I notice you decapitalised all the skill names (Smithing, Crafting etc) in one of your edits. Regarding the category you've created.. I'm not sure that this category will work (i.e. if the original intent was sorting the pages based on dates), as all pages will fall under "2" since the pages must have been edited in 2008. Even if it sorts within the "2" category, it is sorted alphabetically, and not by dates. Thus, I'm wondering whether we should keep this category, as it does not serves its purpose?   az ^talk   18:01, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

It you sorted the items by REVISIONTIMESTAMP, it does not account for vandalism edits, reverts, and other edits not relevant to the actual "update".   az ^talk   09:00, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

This is why we have the Category:Needs price update which basically splits the items more systematically in several categories: 7 days, 28 days, 29+ days (since the last update). Even if your method sorts it "oldest first", the category will show all the items in a single category. Okay then, let's leave it as it is. I actually do have an "unofficial" bot that pulls the data from the Jagex site, and updates the Exchange pages automatically. (And yes, it is a namespace now.) This edit was done by the bot.   az ^talk   09:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Rick, since you're updating the prices using a bot (I'm assuming an automated script of some sort), could you insert the Item objID for the particular item? The objID is used to access the RuneScape page "http://itemdb-rs.runescape.com/viewitem.ws?obj=".

For example, Santa hat's objID is 1050, and the page is located at: "http://itemdb-rs.runescape.com/viewitem.ws?obj=1050"

You could add it in like this:

Actually, I was planning to add them using a bot, but never had the time to do it. Yeah, I can see that it would be hard to detect vandalism... but we already have links in some/most of the pages anyway.

Rick, I think you need a separate account. Something like "RickBot" just to do the bot stuff. What concerns me is that as a bot, your "human" edits would not appear in Recent Changes. I have a serious question however, regarding the automated bot. Do you have source code for this? There is always the Mack Truck theory you realize, you know the one where you get killed by a Mack Truck and we're left without a way to keep updated. More likely would be a case like the PointyBot scenario (trust me, I would never wish a Mack Truck on anyone, but it is one of those theoretical possibilities). What platform/language is it? I use perl to make a list of pages call wget to read them use perl to analyse them and create an XML file for WP:AWB to run against wikia. Rich Farmbrough, 20:19 22 November 2008 (GMT).

Where do these live in the exchangeItem template now? Rich Farmbrough, 22:00 9 January 2009 (GMT).

They are found in two places:

• Template:ExcgDefault - where the "default" display characteristics of the Exchange pages now lives
• Template:ExchangeItem/doc - where you should put category information about the template itself

I'll try to respond on your user page as well. I am presuming that you want to impact what categories are linked to individual exchange pages, such as items that haven't been updated for more than 30 days?

I was just editing a few Exchange: entries and it hit me that it was a perfect job for a bot and of course you already have a bot account, so ... do you think you could set up a bot to follow the article links and extract the lo-alch, hi-alch, and store prices and then populate those fields in the Exchange: entries? ~kytti khat– 14:28, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Wow, nearly 2,000 of them are missing data. One i looked at had no alch values yet had a store price.

--however due to how some interpret "store" as price to buy from a general store's player stock versus how others interpret "store" to mean speciality store's main stock infinite price, versus yet other's interpretation as store purchase price, which of course varies between stores, I'd have to say the Store field in it's current incarnation is mostly virtually worthless on the whole.--

I'm guessing you had a small go at eliminating some of the holes in the data. From the sample i peeked at it looks like lots of them have mismatching information as is the case with the black kiteshield. I noticed a few edits like this one where the only thing updated was the dates. Then there are items such as Exchange:Bronze dagger which are virtually never going to change. do you think it would be worthwhile to have SmackBot hold off on editing just the date or perhaps decrease the number of times the date alone is updated? 05:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Well at the moment SB updates about half the prices everyday, those that have changed, and on Saturday and Wednesday does the whole lot. This was for two reasons, firstly to show that the item hasn't been forgotten, and secondly to keep the category Category:Grand Exchange by date updated in a state where problem items are generally at the beginning. Hey, SmackBot seems to be malfunctioning. It keeps updating items with incorrect prices. And I don't just mean outdated prices... they're completely incorrect even in the same minute that the bot updates them.

Hi Rich, By browsing the main gemw pages, I've manually managed to fix some of the problems caused by the other bot (LowAlch, Category and LastDate), but it's not so easy to browse what is not on those pages. I was wondering if your bot could produce a list of dodgy looking exchange pages? If you stick them on a page somewhere for me to look at, I'll get them all sorted for you. [edit] Two requests regarding your signature

Hi Rich, I was browsing through the wanted pages and I saw that your signature has a link around the date field in your sig. While this is an interesting idea, unfortunately it creates wanted pages for each date that you sign an article. I don't think we actually want date articles for each day you sign a talk page. Can you please remove the brackets around the date field in your sig?

Also, there is a new policy about signatures that asks that you put your signature in a template. I believe your signature code should now go here Template:Signatures/Rich Farmbrough and then you just update your signature preferences to say {{SUBST:Nosubst|Signatures/yournamehere}}.

I appreciate your response, but I'm not sure we're on the same page. What I think is happening is that your signature creates a link to a date page with the same date. Now, if that date page already exists, fine, it will link to that page. However, if that date page does not exist, the link will show up in Special:WantedPages. If you create a link to a page, you assume that the page exists or should be created soon. My concern is that I don't think we want to create a link to every date that you sign a page. I would need to see your signature code to better explain myself. Could you show me the code you're using in your signature? Please take a look at Category:Dates_in_RuneScape. Not all dates have pages that are associated with them. Some have links, but others are just plain text. I am asking you to please delete the [[ ]] around the date field in your signature, so the we don't have a wanted page Special:WantedPages everytime you sign an article. The reason I noticed this about your signature in the first place was because there were wanted links on that page as a result of your signature. Since you seem a lot more savvy in the coding of the Typos list, would it be possible to set the AWB to ignore the spelling of "color" when it's in the phrase "font color"? I am continually finding this, and it would be nice for it to automatically ignore this phrase, as "font colour" will not display the color properly.

Your bot is updating the GE prices with an old timestamp. And it updates the prices while it has already been updated earlier on the day by GEBot, thus this item does not reflect the GE market movement anymore... [edit] Comma separators in Exchange prices

The next time SmackBot updates the prices in Exchange pages, could you add comma separators? i.e. instead of "11000", use "11,000". I've fixed the templates so that prices can now be inputted using commas. Smackbot incorrectly updated the Exchange:Dragon pickaxe page here. You can see here that the price isn't 7.5m, but 8.3m as it was before. Thought you ought to know!  Psycho Robot Talk Cont  02:43, September 18, 2009 (UTC)

Reason is simple, your dates are backwards, in fact maybe all sig dates are backwards. This sort of change, which provides no benefit and breaks everything, is called an "upgrade". <sigh> Currently SB can't edit because of another "upgrade". [1] Rich Farmbrough, 11:00 18 September 2009 (GMT).

I believe this may be caused by the url change, http://services.runescape.com/m=itemdb_rs/viewitem.ws?obj=453 is the new url scheme for the gedb.
