Remember that great discussion of last year? It has come time again and I have no idea where it is and I was hoping to recheck it for points to use in current discussion. I'm trying to work out ways to recude the number of links. Maybe there are possibilities with the link attribute rel=nofollow, to have less links where our pagerank leaks to. I asked Dr5ag2on1 and Richard1990 about this.

[edit] Mainpage
Az,
Joe and I are here to help out with the main page. We'll be in touch :) -- Doug
(talk) 22:21, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hi az. Using the image buttons found on ElfAnurin's test page, I made a first draft of a possible new main page design. Take a look here and let me know what you think. Some things to note: keeping non-essential/non-content links to a minimum will improve the wiki's search rank, which is why I removed links such as 'Other languages' (which are already on the sidebar menu), Policies, Terms of Use, etc. Those links are currently on the top-center part of the page, which Google interprets to be the place where the most important links are located. Since the 'Sister Sites' links aren't on the sidebar menu, I moved them to the bottom of the left column, but I'd suggest that they be removed from the main page and added to the sidebar, since they do not link to any of the wiki's content. Anyway, check out my test page and give me any feedback you have, so that we can make progress toward a new main page design that will improve the RuneScape Wiki's google rank while also allowing the community to easily navigate to the information that they want to see. JoePlay (talk) 01:45, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- I like this. I really think we should get this underway ASAP. Kudos to Joeplay and Az. Thanks guys. 05:48, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, az. I made the changes you requested, so take another look. Since the Sister Sites links are now on both the Monaco and Monobook sidebars, I removed them from the page. NOTE: I re-uploaded the image buttons as 75x75, but as I type this, the image server cache has not updated yet. So instead of appearing as sharp, crisp images, they're appearing blurry due to the browser scaling the old versions to 75x75. Unfortunately, this is normal. Whenever you upload a new version of an existing file, it may take a while for the new version to display. Anyway, I look forward to your updated feedback. JoePlay (talk) 19:39, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
"Could you fix the overlapping icons? I noticed this in Muppet Wiki too, although not as much." - It's an example of how the mainpage could be right? He doesn't have to brainstorm on how to fix that, since I already have thought about that.
ElfAnurin . 10:46, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- The overlapping is easily fixed by going back to the 2 row layout I had previously, which I just did, but I kept the smaller (75x75) images, so there should be no problem with that now. The reason 2008 and 2004 are appearing on the keywords list is because they appear as links, not to mention that they are also bold, which gives them even more "importance." So to prevent that without removing the "On this day" section, just remove the link from all the years that appear on the pages that are used in the section. JoePlay (talk) 17:33, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'd like to show the potential new design to the rest of the wiki community ASAP, so if you don't have any more crucial issues with it, let me know and we can start a discussion topic in the forum for further feedback. I also plan to explain the reason for the changes that were made, so that the community knows that the changes are for improving the wiki's search engine rank, which will result in more visitors and contributors. JoePlay (talk) 19:15, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Just a heads up... I made a new forum topic here. Could you please update the first sentence in the Sitenotice to direct everyone to the new discussion? I can do it myself, but I think it would be best to keep all the edits made to the Sitenotice done by RuneScape Wiki admins. Also, if you could sticky the topic, that would be cool. Thanks for all the help, az. JoePlay (talk) 22:09, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I just chose those colours because I thought they went with the rest of the page and headings better than the colours that were already there. [edit] Do you know how?
The discussion about Links has recently closed approving the creation of a links section and relationships with other fansites as I am sure you are aware of. However when it comes to modifying the main page, I have no idea where to start. Do you know how and feel comfortable with creating a collapsable links section in the left hand side navigation menu so we could see how it looks? I am using monobook so I may not be looking at what everyone else is, but hopefully that wont change much. Many thanks.

- I was going to post this at the forums, but then the process of putting a simple html link on a page would then be delayed by consensus when it doesn't really matter where the link is placed because its performing a simple function. Hello, I noticed that the <center> tag is used in the code at MediaWiki:common.js that inserts a new image gallery. Per W3C guidelines, tags like <center> have been deprecated in the HTML 4 standard. The tag can be replaced by using <div align="center">, e.g:
mwCustomEditButtons[mwCustomEditButtons.length] = {
"imageFile": "http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/central/images/1/12/Button_gallery.png",

[edit] More siteNotice CSS+JS
This fixes(hides mostly) the [Dismiss] being moved from the normal position to the siteNotice table. The only known issue is that under Monobook the site notice is slightly shorter that usual(by only a few pixels on the right) until everything fully loads, so it still looks much better. Feel free to test it yourself. :-) It is known to work in Firefox 3.5, Internet Explorer 7, Opera 10 Beta, Camino 2 Beta, and Safari 4.0 and I haven't tested it in any others than the previously mentioned.
MediaWiki:Common.css:(You shouldn't need any more !important as far as I can tell, in fact it may fail if you add the rest of them because it is difficult to override a !important in JavaScript, although you can see the method I figured out to work around it.)

Are the requirments (in this case, herblore) for WGS NEEDED (as in, needed later in the quest for more than a few minutes, using alot of boosts instead of just one, mixing more than one potion/etc, or whatever happens) or do I just need them to start? If I need them to start, that'd be AWESOME! [edit] Re: Main Page Feedback
I couldn't find where you linked the third design on the forum page so I figured I'd just reply here. If need be you can copy/paste this into the forums in the appropriate section.
Firstly, I like how the headers were given a more unified color scheme. I liked particularly how RuneScape News was cyan, and all the subheadings were a lighter shade of cyan. An issue I still have is that the Notable Pages, Current Date, and Opinion Poll sections all have different colored headings than those around them. Notable Pages should be the same color as RuneScape News, and Opinion Poll and the Current date should be the same shade of green as the other sections in that column. One might argue that such a color scheme looks plain, but my teachings as an interior designer have always said that simple and logical is always better than exciting yet hectic.
I also feel like the Featured Article and Featured Image aren't given the attention they should get when they're on the side. I think the current main page handles them better, putting them centered under the languages. Moving those would allow us to move the poll higher on the page, giving IT more attention as well. Most people wouldn't see it otherwise. Most people come here, search what they want and go there without even looking over the main page.
For that same reason, the navigation buttons should be bigger. I think ElfAnurin's version handled the buttons very well, but they're kinda messed up right now! Dunno what happened. If three rows of buttons like he had is not desirable for one reason or another, so be it, but I feel they definitely do need to be bigger. Also my feedback about the contents of the buttons remains the same:
- “The "Skills" button shows skill icons. This is very cartoony and flat when compared with the other images shown, which all show game screenshots. I think if anything this button should show people USING the skills, like someone fishing or mixing a potion. The "Weapons" button is very empty compared with the other images. You should either add more weapons or players using the weapons. The "Guides" button has a bunch of question marks and exclamation points floating around. I feel this is too literal. It should be more subtle without being too obscure. Some more tutors migh be nice. As for the Bestiary button, I don't think it should be just one monster. It'd be very visually pleasing to see a very large monster (like TzTok-Jad), a medium sized monster, and a small monster.”

This will confuse SmackBot, it has a table locally, linking item ID's to exchange titles which can be generated automatically. So in theory if I know some stuff has been moved I just regenerate the table. However the Wikia servers seem to fail to serve about .1% of the pages, so in reality I tend to update it by hand. When deleting images that have been replaced by a newer version but still link to people's userpages, what should I do?? should I edit their userpages so it doesn't create a wanted page or replace with the newer image that has replaced it?? Thanks Evil Yanks talk 07:46, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Both "File:Combat outfit.png" and "File:Gilded Armour(male).gif". Both have been replaced by newer images and don't link to mainspace, yet still link to userpages. I don't want to delete them currently since I would create wanted pages on their userpages. I am more asking, what would you do in this situation.

- Would you delete the link or replace with the newer image though?? Sorry about how vauge everything has been.

[edit] Signature guide...
Hi Az =) I remember seeing a page a while ago that explained alot about how to customize signatures. It had so much more tips and styles than RS:SIG or H:CYS, yet I can't seem to find it. I've searched Wikipedia and Wikia's pages about signatures, along with countless other wikis (such as Wookieepedia), and I just CAN'T seem to find it.. for example, it had shown different styles of borders, such as curved borders (like yours), and dashed curved borders, and many other things of the sort. Do you have any idea where I would find this page? Please and thanks

- No, sorry, that's not it :\ I don't want you to run around the website looking for it, and it's not TOTALLY necessary that I find it, but it sure would help alot :) Do you think it could have been a user-made guide? --

- Hmm.. well that certainly helps a bit, but I guess I just wanted to find the page for it's information on borders
I was wondering, how could I use a curved/curved&dashed (either would be nice) border in my signature? I'd just like to try it out and see how it looks, but first, I'd need to know the code for it :P Here's my full signature code:
<span style="border:2px solid black; background-color:blue;"><span style="color:white;">Lil Diriz 77 </span><span style="color:white;">T </span> <span style="color:white;">C</span> <span style="color:white;">E</span> </span>
- Hmm.. well that certainly helps a bit, but I guess I just wanted to find the page for it's information on borders
- I'd appreciate it much if you could tell me what to add to the border part of my code (for curved/curved&dashed, remember), thanks

- Oh, one more thing. You said the curved style only works in Firefox (which IS what I'm using, so it works). What exactly does that mean? Can other people who are using a different browser see it to? Or do they just see the signature without the Moz- code? Like, do they see it as if the Moz- code wasn't there? As if it has no curves, like it did before you helped me :P? --

[edit] re: swearing
Did not get a chance to reply to you in the thread seeing as I was gone the day the discussion was archived. I just wanted to touch on and reply to what you said. I am just going to continue my reply as if it was right under yours.
According to both wikipedia and the way we commonly handle cases like this, we use discussions as evidence for what is allowed when a policy does not come from a discussion. I would also agree to the general idea that just because we don't have a policy that says something about it doesn't mean that its not allowed/disallowed. Policies don't really mean anything, the policies came from discussion so I am a fan of the idea that discussion (or a new one about an old topic) is the end all be all.
Obviously the comment "Satan worshiping" was sardonic. I have abstained from beginning religious beliefs into that discussion. Here are some of the things asserted about my charachter in that thread because I entertain the idea of swearing:
- Immature
- Wrong (not sure about this one, wrong in general or just wrong about everything)
- Immoral
- Less valuable opinion
- naturally insulting and abrasive
- Ignorant
The list goes on...[2]
Now I wasnt trying to be hurtful, but it gets to a point when individually refuting every point someone makes is like swimming against the current, it wont get you anywhere. So would you not agree that, that long into a discussion that swearing was pretty much branded by the opposers as something of very low moral character? Why then would my words be insulting to simply go along with it?
Unfortunately your comment about the compromise being a ninja attempt by the supporters is unfounded as one of the key people in writing it (PhyscoRobot) happens to agree with your side of the argument [3]. I would like to think that he was displaying the behavior that more people should seek to copy and being just a tad reasonable in the face of overwhelming illogical rambling.
In your argument about people who swear being immoral you seemed to completely ignore that we are not a single culture who have predefined religious or moral grounds from which to build and did not explain why we should naturally adopt a stance that any number of cultures have long attached themselves to for any reason.
Anyway, it saddens me that the discussion was given the same annoying attention that many other long yew grove threads have been given. That the thread has run its course and everyone is just yelling at each other. Personally I think the people opposed to swearing just wanted the compromise to die because it would have violated their idea of what a good environment. I also have yet to see anyone at all prove scientifically, religiously, or socially that swearing should be removed because it actually causes a negative affect among the people who partake and those around them. It also saddens me that in the future people opposed will only use the discussion as fuel for their own twisted ideals.
