Chapter 1 - James
Our story begins with a young man who had just come of age. He left home with confidence in his heart and excitement in his mind. This man's name was James. James was always the head of the class when he was young. His many friends looked up to him and admired him, worshipped him as they would Guthix. Now, his final year in school had finished, and he was ready to leave his small house in Varrock to explore the many lands of Gielinor. Where exactly he would go, nobody knew. However, James walked on.
Chapter 2 - Fred the Farmer
"Excuse me sir. Do you know how to get to the Island of the Tutors?" Asked James. "I'll be needing to get there 5 minutes before Rune."
"The Island of the Tutors? Tutorial Island? Oh yeah, of course I'll take ya there mate. Jus' get in the back o' this cart here." answered the man, who seemed to look very much like a farmer. James looked back and saw a huge cart tied to the back of a black horse who's hair stood out, shinning in the sun's light.
"Excuse me sir, may I ask where you come from?" Asked James.
"Lumbridge, mate. I be a farmer, Fred's me name. Recently I been havin' a problem, complaints about penguins in me yard. Rubbish."
"Penguins? I don't suppose you-" The cart stopped. What seemed to be five minutes ago, James had been sitting walking in a green, grassy landscape with buildings to the south and a river just east. Now, he was sitting on a red stone walkway in front of an ocean. There were many ships docked at the port.
"Well here we are, Sarim. Anyways, you take that ship to the Island. Bye mate, see ya around!" Fred said in a friendly voice that reminded James of his father back home.
"See you around buddy, I'm off." James step walked over the lander onto the ship. There were many other young boys and girls just like him sitting in the boat.
Chapter 3 - The Missing Card
As the boat rocked back and forth, the sun's light shined on them. It was 10 past Rune, the sun was shining at it's hottest and Jame's neck burned as it's rays scorched it. James looked around but all he could see was the vast, blue ocean, reaching all around them. It's waves seemed to engulf them as they danced up and down. James thought the boat ride would never end. He had became seas sick when his mother and father took him to Brimhaven ten years ago, when he was eight. Jame's stomach grumbled as he gasped for air. He felt as if he would throw up.
James looked back. Behind the boat, he could make out a tower. The Wizards' Tower! In his 6th year in school, he had read about it in a text book. The picture he looked at in the book was almost identical to the tower itself, shining in the distance. He looked forward. There, illuminated by the sun's light, he could see land. 3 minutes passed and as the seconds ticked by, the land became bigger. The ship was close enough for James to see that it was an Island. As he looked around, James noticed that all of the other boys and girls were looking at it too. Tutorial Island!
"LAND HO!" shouted the captain. The island was getting closer, and now shapes could be seen, buildings. Jame's heart pounded with excitement.
"Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on Tutorial Island. I know many of you are excited, but please look at the cards we gave you. You should each have a number. Now, make a singe file line. Number 1, next to me. 29, back by Mr.Ned." Shouted the captain.
James looked down at his sweater. Then, he realized that he had not been given a card. What was he to do? He wouldn't be allowed on without a tag. He ran to the back of the line, hoping with all of his heart that Mr.Ned would be able to help him. As he approached the man, he noticed that he was very old. He seemed to have lived out his life on the waves.
"Excuse me, Mr.Ned!?! I don't think I have a card. I arrived late, please, can you help me, oh please!?!" The sentence seemed to run out of Jame's mouth. His heart pounded even harder.
"Here, take this. I must have missed you because you came in late. Sorry 'bout that." answered Ned in a calm voice. James would much rather be spending the day with him than the captain, who's deep voice made his words sound like Zamorak's thunder.
"Oh thank you sooo much sir I don't know what I would have done without you, Mr.Ned!"
"Just call me Ned, I live down in Draynor, perhaps you could come and visit some time?"
"Of course Ned, anything you want, I owe my arms and legs to you." Said James. And it was true, without old sailor Ned, James would never have gotten where he was destined to...
Chapter 4 - The Trio
As James stepped onto the island, he felt a surge of determination in his heart. He was taking his first steps in a journey, a journey through Gielinor. James was ready. As he walked up the stone steps leading to a large, red building, he noticed a little, transparent sign above a girl's head. In white and yellow letters, it read Elizabeth (level-3).
"Excuse me ... err ... Elizabeth, but why is there a brown sign above your head? Seems rather odd if you ask me." said James. He was confused.
"Brown sign? I don't know what you mean. But I must point out that there's a sign above your head, James, that says you're level 3." The girl seemed confused too. Just then, a boy with brown hair and a black shirt tucked under a leather belt constricting a pair of black pants.
"My dad told me about that. When he came here 30 years ago, his lot had the same question. Those signs are above every one's head. You can't see them on your own, but they tell people about you. What level you are, what your name is... We all see each other's level in yellow because we're the same level. Red is for higher levels, orange is between, green's for lower and dark yellow between that." The boy exclaimed. James noticed that his name was Daniel.
"Ok, thanks ... Daniel." Said James.
"Just call me Dan. Oh and can us three be fr-." A deep, but soft voice interrupted them. James looked forward. Before him stood a tall man in a red shirt and white pants. He began to speak.
"It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Tutorial Island. The island is dedicated to the teaching of young men and women like you who want to become adventurers, travelers, fighters, merchants and many more things. In the fourth age, humans sailed from what is now the Wizards' Tower to this island. They realized it would make an excellent place to teach. Now, all you must do is follow the instructions given to you by the guides and you shall pass the tests. The skills you will be learning on the island are the basics you will need to know on your travels. Well, good luck. I would like all of you to pass through this gate and you will be meeting your first guide." The man ended his sentence very calmly. It seemed that he had practiced this speech many times. James, Elizabeth and Daniel walked together through the gate. James knew that the three of them would be good friends.
Chapter 5 - The first test
James, Elizabeth, who had informed the other two that she preferred being called Elli, and Daniel walked along with the other teenagers through a white, long hallway with light shining down through the skylights in the ceiling. The hall was very big and huge, white stone pillars held up the smooth, but aging, white marble ceiling. Occasionally the trio stopped to look at the designs carved into the walls. James noticed that one of the symbols, an X made up of two slightly curved slashes, was the symbol on the wall of his living room. His mother had told him that it represented the mighty kingdom of Misthalin. His house was in Varrock and so he had seen this symbol many times.
As the teenagers neared the end of the hallway, they began to make out a pond on the other side. The pond was surrounded by numerous trees. Oaks, Willows, Evergreens and Yews. Daniel pointed to a tall figure. It was hard to make out in the distance. They were nearing it. James looked up and saw a tree with what seemed to look like stardust constantly falling out of the tree. However, it only disappeared when it hit the ground. The group of children and their guide were close enough now to notice that the grass around that particular tree was very green and seemed much more healthy than the grass in the field surrounding it. This tree must have been one of the legendary magic trees. Every child grows up learning about these rare and majestic trees, which have been found in few places around Gielinor. James thought it looked wonderful as it's magical dust sprinkled out of it. He felt as though he could look at it all d-
"Good after rune everyone." spoke a soft voice. James looked up and noticed a woman, about as old as his mother, was speaking. "Today, you shall all be part of the 169th Fifth Age class of Tutorial Island. I am the survival expert of the island. I will teach you all how to survive if any of you are ever stranded or lost in a remote area, such as Crandor Isle or the Wilderness. Now, let us begin. If you have no source of food, you're best hope is to go fishing in a nearby pond or lake. Most areas, even the desert, have rivers. The first thing you must look for when fishing is a basic net. For more experienced fishers, there are harpoons, rods and lobster cages but for the fish in this pond, you'll be using the nets under you." She paused and gave them all time to find their nets. James noticed that he had stepped on his. "Now, the second thing you must do is look for a fishing spot. Bubbles are a good indicator that fish are nearby. If you look down into the water, you will be able to see what kind of fish are in the pond. All of you will be fishing for shrimp. After you examine your fishing spot, gently place your net underwater. When you feel a vibration or see a fish, pull it up. Place your fish next to you. Repeat this as many times as you wish. I'll give you all a moment to do this." She stopped.
James, Daniel and Elli picked up their nets and walked towards the area which the guide had been standing. Elli caught her fish first, followed by James. Daniel still seemed to be having some trouble until Elli grabbed his net out of his hand and placed it underwater. After 10 seconds or so a dark figure swiftly swam in. Elli was fast and pulled the net up.
"I don't enjoy doing that knowing what will happen to these poor shrimp... But if we have to..." Elli said in a rather sad voice.
"I went fishing with my dad one time, it wasn't half as easy or fun as I thought it would be. Long story. My dad said that it was ok and it just wasn't my thing." said Daniel.
"I see that all of you have a couple shrimp. Now, step 4 would be to grab the axes laying next to you." James looked down and noticed that an axe with a bronze blade lay next to him. "Go to a nearby tree, you may have some trouble with this in the Wilderness and the Desert but rest assured that you will find what you are looking for, and cut it down. This may take a while. Now, I must remind you all that certain trees are harder to cut than others. Yews and Magic trees would be the hardest. An experienced woodcutter will be able to approach a Magic tree and leave without a broken axe but the lot of you wouldn't. I'm a very experienced woodcutter and so I will be able to cut one of these magical trees, but you wont, you'll just break your axe. I am willing to demonstrate what happens when you go in over your head. A volunteer... ermmm... you miss, yes you." She pointed to Elli. "Now please use this axe because you may need the ones I give you." The woman handed Elli a bronze axe. She approached the magic tree and swung her axe at it. The axe hit the tree and then bounced off. Elli turned her head to look at it. Half of it was gone. She looked down and saw the blade sitting in the grass. The guide took the axe from her. "Thank you. Yes, this is what will happen when you attempt to cut a strong tree such as this rare magical one. Now, it is also wise to approach a good tree with a good axe. The axe I am holding in my hand is called a Dragon Axe. These are very rare and very expensive and only experienced woodcutters may cut them. Now on to the next step. The tinderboxes lying next to you may be used to light the logs. I presume you all know how to light a fire? Good, now please light your logs. Don't worry, this grass has been enchanted so it's not flammable. Been like this since the last incident... Anyways, you may all go ahead." Finished the woman.
Each person approached one of the many surrounding trees, which were considerably small compared to the others which were strong. After each person had a couple logs, they proceeded to lighting them. The group had no trouble lighting the fire and after a few attempts, James had his logs lit. Elli and Daniel had finished before him.
"The last and final step, take one of the shrimp you fished for, which should be dead by now, and hold them over the fire. When they feel crisp and ready to you, take them off. I'm not going to go into the details of cooking, but with more experience you will burn your food less. After the fish are cooked, you may eat them and when everyone is done, you are all done, you are welcome to proceed through that gate over there. Good luck and goodbye."
After everyone had finished, the teenagers started for the gate. The next test awaited them.
