Dev Blog: Quest Point Master Cape

The Quest Point cape has always been a difficult, time-consuming cape to attain and maintain. Those who do posses one can boast about having a great amount of dedication and commitment in skills across the board as well as being able to complete the many mind-twisting puzzles that we have with over 200 Quests in the game!

The quest point cape, even though it shows the amount of dedication beyond a single 99 in a skill, never had a "trimmed" version and rather than adding an extra colour to the cape's tassels we thought of going a step further and introduce a Quest Point Master cape.

What is a Quest Point Master Cape?

A master cape shows even greater dedication than a skillcape but with the amount of quests that are available we chose a slightly different approach:
- Completing all quests, miniquests and claiming all post-quest rewards will be a requirement to wear the cape.
-> Post-quest rewards will not include lore books that do not necessarily improve the player character (e.g. 'Archmage' or post-Plague's End titles).
-> Anything that awards items, XP or unlocks should be a requirement.
- The cape would have a similar appearance to that of a master ("120") cape.
- Some of the requirements will overlap with the Completionist and Trimmed Completionist capes (but will not be a requirement for either).
- It would be included in the Completionist tab for an easy way of tracking your progress.

Secondly, few things what that cape is not: - An everything-lore cape.
- A taskmaster cape.
- An overly RNG-based cape.
- A music cape.
- A D&D or a Minigame cape.
- A requirement for the Completionist/Trimmed Completionist cape, just like any other master cape other than Dungeoneering.

Requirements

This is where we need you! Below is a list of the requirements that would be befitting the master cape but being just human we might have missed one or two thus in order to get this correct the first time - please do suggest other requirements that you think would fit in well with the cape. Do remember, however, tasks, RNG-based lore books that do not necessarily improve the player character from a gameplay standpoint, pets, Minigames and D&D's should not be part of the cape.

What's next?

With the core aims being revealed to you, we're now eagerly waiting for your feedback! Please note that some things might change during development and not every bit of feedback will be taken on-board but we will be monitoring this thread and I will be updating the requirements list if the suggestions are feasible. :)

The Ninja Team

UPDATE 3/08/15

Hey all once again,

After re-reading the thread for a fourth time it is clear that:
- A lot of you would prefer to have lore additions, even if heavily RNG-based.
- A lot of you would prefer to have D&D's and minigames included.
- A lot of you feel like this is a mini comp/trim cape and that it should be included to either (or even both).
- A lot of you would prefer something more "grand".

Based on your feedback it appears clear that if this was released it would upset more people than make them happy hence I am not going to be developing it further. This is not "throwing in the towel" but it would not make sense to release something that you, the players, would be unhappy about.

This, however, doesn't mean the end of the cape! You, as a community, are free to use the suggestions, lore or any other forums to define a list, guidelines and what type of a cape it should be - a trimmed skillcape, a master cape or something grand like the completionist cape.

I will be leaving this thread open for a few days and will be collating feedback from all over the forums once again at a later date.

edit: just to make it clearer, it's not cancelled, just postponed.

Thanks! :)

UPDATE 4/08/15

Hey everyone, just a quick update:
- The update is not "scrapped" as many of you seemed to believe.
- We are still monitoring the thread and gathering feedback.
- I will be updating the thread after collating all of the feedback.
- This thread is, for now, mainly for discussion; I will be putting a "v2" dev blog once we come closer to an agreement regarding the guidelines (which should hopefully be soon).
-> The new dev blog will have a link to this as well as a brief summary as to what we should and should not do.

And lastly, please stop arguing about Livid Farm, it was made clear that it's too much controversy and with the new guidelines it would unlikely be added.

Cheers. :)

UPDATE 5/08/15 (p. 102)

Good afternoon! :)

Firstly, thank you very much for keeping the discussion rolling and actually putting things together! This is what I love seeing and very well done to all of you who've contributed!

Secondly, a little about myself as even JMods tend to have different approaches. ;)
- I tend to get straight to the point hence apologies if I appeared to be rude at some point!
- I like my bullet points as it makes things easier to read and prevents walls of text. If it seems like I'm missing something out or not covering enough - do let me know.
- I had no intentions of "scrapping" the cape at any point and it was never scrapped. If it appeared as so - apologies from my part again. :) Saying "at a later date" doesn't mean 5 years from now on, it's just that you cannot give correct ETA's about these things.

Now that I've got that out of the way, let's look what we've got in terms of guidelines:

- Completing all quests, miniquests and claiming all post-quest rewards.
-> Post-quest rewards are defined as:

  • Lore content; not everything can be added due to extreme drops rates of some things but trying to cover most of it as long as it's quest-related is be relevant.
  • Character unlocks (cosmetic overrides/items such as the Crest of Seren and permanent items such as the gilded cabbage).
  • Directly-related post-quest activities that award items or XP (including chompies, elder chronicles, Thalassus White Knight rank, chimp ice, Addy Dragon Dragonkin Journals, Prifddinas lamps etc.).

- Minigames and D&D's will be included as long as they:
-> Are directly introduced and/or are mentioned in the Quest and provide one-off or permanent rewards (Court Cases, Temple Trekking, Fight Kiln (enhanced fire cape). Dom Tower/Livid Farm do not fit under these).
- Titles, as long as they show off a direct accomplishment post-quest or are awarded with a one-off XP lamp/drop. I.e. Vyrelord/Annihilator. Rush of Blood titles are not directly tied to the quest, neither is Archamge (few examples).

Definition of what the Master Quest cape is not:
- A taskmaster cape.
- A music cape.
- Having items that have to be re-earned if destroyed (Imcando pickaxe, adze, big rock, pets etc.).
- A requirement for the Completionist/Trimmed Completionist cape, just like any other master cape other than Dungeoneering.
- A Completionist cape - the requirements may and will clash but that is unavoidable.
- An "insanely" RNG-based cape. I.e. Anything similar to champion scrolls' drop rate.

I would disagree with cutscenes as just by completing quests you view them regardless and on top of that - I don't think there's a way we can track all of them either.

In regards to better stats - the stats would stay the same as a master cape but I am not ruling out the possibility of adding Ava's alerter to the cape. That would be up for an internal balancing discussion at a later point. :)

I would be happy with those but would still need a little more time, for the sake of gathering feedback and making fine-adjustments.

Please consider the part below as a separate point and try to provide feedback on both rather than either! :)

I would be inclined to add the following to the requirements based on the guidelines above: - QBD journals. I would argue for adding these as QBD is pretty much directly introduced during the quest. Getting 100 QBD kills would be irrelevant but the journals do make sense as they enrich the post-quest lore.

- Some of the Dungeoneering journals:
-> Related to Sagas/Quests.
-> The main chunk of DG lore.
-> Would exclude 'Marmaros and Thok' and some of the 'Misc.' (journals 16-20) due their highly RNG-based nature (random monster drops rather than boss drops).
-> Add more prestige to the cape via unique requirements.

Lastly, illuminated God books. I would be personally making the decision and not making it public until the cape is released. This is to prevent panic buying/panic selling of book pages. Might attract highly mixed opinions but that's the only way I see it as being fair, sorry!

Since we've got the rough guidelines nailed down we can start making a list of requirements. I'll be backtracking through the topic (again) and hopefully have a rough idea for the list by tomorrow. If anything has been missed up to this point (not only my OP but what you've suggested through the pages as well) - feel free to include it!

Cheers. :)

UPDATE 6/08/15 (p. 113)

Hey, below are the near-finalised guidelines. Putting a full list of requirements (and expanding further upon it) is taking more time than expected and I want to let you know and discuss my proposal in terms of guidelines sooner rather than later!

To sum the requirements up before I've compiled a full list:
- All of the requirements from the first page (minus the few that are already requiremented for some quests and minus Livid Farm) would be included.
- Most of the requirements suggested by you would be included, if I'm correct there were around 10-15 that sounded suitable.
- I have also expanded upon the newest requirements right after the guidelines on this post.

GUIDELINES:

We will ask you to complete all quests, miniquests, unabridged sagas and story-oriented content. Story-oriented content is defined as:
- Content that rewards the player with lore (memorium crystals in Elf City)
- Content that asks the player to participate in story-rich content (Court Cases)
- Content that asks the player to play expanded versions of content that featured in a quest (Temple Trekking)
- We will not include content that has a light narrative theme, rather than deep story or connections to a quest. For example, Cabbage Facepunch Bonanza and Livid Farm have some backstory, but are not integral to RuneScape’s storyline.

We will ask you to gain story-oriented unique items. These are defined as:
- Titles, as long as they show off a story accomplishment (Vyrelord/Annihilator).
- Items, cosmetic or otherwise, significant to the storyline (gilded cabbage, Crest of Seren).
- Journals and other books

The Master Quest cape is not:
- A taskmaster cape.
- A music cape.
- A requirement for the Completionist/Trimmed Completionist cape (just like any other master cape, other than Dungeoneering).
- A completionist cape - the requirements may and will clash but that is unavoidable.
- An overly RNG-based cape. I.e. Anything similar to champion scrolls' drop rate.

NEW REQUIREMENTS:

A comprehensive list of requirements will come later, but these are the requirements that I have recently added to the cape, based on your feedback.

Reworked quests:
- Druidic Ritual
- Wolf's Whistle
- Death plateau
- Ashdale tutorial

Lore journals, with drop rate shown at the end for some:
- Adamant/Rune dragon journals (Forcae's journal), 10 pages total, 1/20 drop chance
- Adamant dragon journals post-Hero's Welcome (4 journals), 1/100drop chance
- KBD book, 1/1000 (drops for everyone)
- QBD journals
- GWD books - 1/64, not influenced by Hardmode
- Barbarian Assault books
- History of the Order (22 Ascension Dungeon pages)
- Vorago's introduction dialogue
- Mazcab stone fragments (5 in total)
- Dominion tower journal pages
- Ancient Cavern pages
- Voice of the elders (8 parts, Prifddinas book)
- Kaigi's journal pages (4 total)

DG journals:
- Marmaros and Thok - 1/1000 (drops for the whole party)
- Misc. journals 1 through 15 (boss monster drops, drops for the whole party) - 1/1000 drop chance
-- Chronicles of Bilrach are still up for discussion as they are lore-related.
-- Kal'Gerion Notes, Stalker Notes and Behemoth Notes would be included.
- Misc. journals 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 not included due to drop rate ranging from 1/10000 to 1/50000. This is the exception we are going to be sticking with because such highly luck based factors is not one of our intentions.

As you can see, the decision has been made to include a big chunk of the in-game lore. The cape should symbolise a great sense of achievement and prestige for both adventurers and lorehounds, hence I believe that even if, in some cases, it is slightly RNG-based, the lore requirements should stand.

The lore requirements have been discussed with colleagues around the office (of different knowledge, levels, play-type and preferences) and so far the approval rating has been high. As always, feel free to discuss and suggest additions! :)

UPDATE 7/08/15 (p. 158)

After reading the 40+ pages we've got over the last 24 hours and speaking to colleagues around the office as well players, the following has been decided:

- Completing all 4 PoP storylines would be a requirement as they fit the current guidelines. -> Quin story (story spoilers ahead)
has implications for an Elder Artefact and the governance of Wushanko.
-> Hyu-Ji and Eastern Curiosities - Offer unique and rich storylines of their own.
-> Guardians of the world (spoilers)
implications on the Anima Mundi.
- The Gu outfit will not be included as it is a post-PoP reward that requires clue voyages which are not directly tied to lore.

- The cape would not be renamed. A master cape is going above and beyond the requirements of a standard skillcape and having guidelines in place is what defines it.

- The cape would not have any special stats nor abilities, this is due to the cape being a master cape which shows dedication beyond a skillcape.

- The chompy bird requirement is being excluded as an exception. Whilst it does fit the guidelines to an extent it does not actually offer much of an expansion in terms of the post-quest activity nor lore.

Below are the [hopefully] finalised guidelines, please notice the added disclaimer at the end.

We will ask you to complete all quests, miniquests, unabridged sagas and story-oriented content. Story-oriented content is defined as:
- Content that rewards the player with lore (memorium crystals in Elf City)
- Content that asks the player to participate in story-rich content (Court Cases, Player-Owned Ports)

DISCLAIMER: We have no intent to change the requirements/guidelines retroactively. With new requirements constantly being added it is possible that at some point an exception, similar to the last Dungeoneering journals or chompy birds, will have to be made.

Thank you for the contributions and feedback everyone! V2 dev blog should hopefully be ready at some point the next week. :)

Cheers!
