Uncharted Isles

A large island in the Uncharted Isles.

The Uncharted Isles are a procedurally generated island exploration system that offers players the ability to discover new islands with unique configurations and features. It was released alongside The Arc on 25 July 2016.

Getting started

There are no level requirements for players wishing to explore the Uncharted Isles; only the completing quest Impressing the Locals is required. From there, the player may set sail to the Uncharted Isles with their crew by speaking with Quartermaster Gully given they have enough supplies to venture forth.

However, in order to take the most advantage of the Uncharted Isles, players should have high skill levels (see below for the requirements), or visiting the Isles will be fairly pointless outside of tasks.

Supplies may be purchased from Rosie on Waiko with chimes. Rosie will also supply the player with 5 free supplies each day; these may be claimed from the crate next to Rosie's merchant stand. Rosie can hold up to 50 free supplies for the player if they forget to claim their free supplies.

Voyages

Uncharted Isles interface

Explore new islands

Voyages of increasing lengths require greater amounts of supplies. While longer voyages do consume more supplies, they offer islands with greater quantities of items washed ashore and greater chances of special resources.

Voyages of differing lengths will require the following supplies:

  • Long Voyage: Supplies (Uncharted Isles) 20 supplies - Leads to islands with 3–5 special resources (an uncharted island map essentially gives a free long voyage)
  • Median Expedition: Supplies (Uncharted Isles) 12 supplies - Leads to islands with 2–3 special resources
  • Short Junket: Supplies (Uncharted Isles) 5 supplies - Leads to islands with 0–1 special resources
  • Claimed Island: Supplies (Uncharted Isles) 3 supplies - Returns to the player's claimed island

The Travelling merchant random event from Deep Sea Fishing can sell Uncharted island map (Deep Sea Fishing) for 800,000 coins that leads to an island with 4-6 special resources.

The rowboat found on the island may be used by players in need of accessing their bank while on an expedition. It may also be used to leave the island, or sail to other islands in the Arc.

Discoverable resources

The daily rare resources found on a claimed island never change. The other features may change between visits to the island. Logging into an Uncharted Isle can reset some of these resources.

Inhabitants

Many denizens are able to take harbour within the Uncharted Isles; these inhabitants are not aggressive, but will defend themselves if attacked by the player. The monsters only have 1,000 life points regardless of their combat level, but if attacked, their health and combat abilities will scale up to the player's based on their combat level and the amount of life points they had left. Corruption Blast or Corruption Shot can easily kill the inhabitants, since their health will not scale up accordingly when indirectly hit by them. Caution is advised with human inhabitants, as all of them are capable of using abilities, making them far more dangerous than their combat level suggests.

Killing these inhabitants can yield small quantities of chimes and other drops.

Possible creatures found encamped on isles:

Basic resources

The Uncharted Isles can be home to a number of basic resources found around the Wushanko Isles.

Bamboo

Bamboo (tree)
Main articles: Bamboo and Bundle of bamboo

Bamboo can occasionally be found on isles, requiring level 90 Woodcutting to be harvested. Five sticks of bamboo can be fletched into a bundle, requiring level 96 Fletching, making them stackable and increasing their sell value.

Crablets and salt

Salty crablet

Crablets are large crabs that have salt deposits grown on their back. While they are a monster, they are passive and can be mined like any mining node. They can only be found on Uncharted Isles. Very rarely a crablet with a golden idol on its back can be found on their isle.

Salty crablets can be mined for sea salt at level 91 Mining for a maximum of 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Each crablet has its own timer, which doesn't stop even if the player stops mining the crablet or starts mining another one. Idol crablets can be mined for a single golden idol at level 98 Mining, which can be sold for a significant profit.

Exuberry bush

Exuberry bush
Main article: Exuberry bush

Exuberry bushes can occasionally be found on uncharted islands. Foraging the bushes requires level 86 Farming and awards players with 25 Farming experience every foraging attempt they make. Successful attempts will award players with either an exuberry or, rarely, an exuberry seed. Up to 35 items may be obtained from a single bush before it will become depleted, refilling the next time the player visits the island.

Gloomshroom zygomites can be found while foraging exuberry bushes.

Occasionally while foraging from a bush the player will be pricked by a thorn, dealing a small amount of damage and displaying the chat message: Ouch! You were pricked by a thorn.

Orokami

Main article: Kami § Orokami

Orokami spirits may be found on the Uncharted Isles, caught for a variety of rewards using the Hunter skill. On long voyages, there is roughly a 37.5% chance that players will find a wandering orokami.[source needed] On large voyage isles there is an average of two orokami spawns available to spawn, making the chance to find a wandering orokami spirit 61% each large voyage.

Tortles

Tortle

Tortles are harmless, turtle-like creatures. They can be hunted at level 90 Hunter with a tortle trap, which harmlessly holds them in place to allow for the collection of shell chippings. The chippings can be crafted into a bowl at level 91 Crafting.

On rare occasions, successful trappings may result in a tortle unearthing a taijitu or chimes from the sand.

Special resources

The Uncharted Isles are home to a number of special resources; these resources are depleted after a player has made a number of successful harvests from them or after a set amount of time has passed. If the player claims an isle, any special resources found on that isle will persist for all continued visits, becoming harvestable again after 00:00 (UTC) if depleted.

Uncharted Isles of the varying sizes each have a set minimum and maximum amount of special resources that can populate the isle. During island generation, 0–5 (depending on the size of the voyage) special resource nodes are rolled for that unique island. Up to 3 of those nodes can consist of alaea crablets, golden bamboos, ornate tortles, and raw wobbegongs. Any remaining nodes are then allotted to either mushroom clusters or ancestral energy colonies, with a combined maximum total of 3.[1]

A Long Voyage is guaranteed to have at least three special resources present, with a maximum of five, a Median Expedition is guaranteed to have at least two special resources present, with a maximum of three, and a Short Junket is not guaranteed to have any special resources present, with at most one.

However, the deep sea map can generate an island with up to six special resources. This can be obtained from fishing at the platform, or paying 800,000 coins when the travelling merchant docks.

Should the player log into an Uncharted Isle due to inactivity, most resources will stay the same based on how much resources are left.

Alaea crablet

Alaea crablet
Main articles: Alaea crablet and Alaea sea salt

The Uncharted Isles can contain alaea crablets, which can be mined for their alaea salt at level 97 Mining. Each crablet can be mined for a maximum of 330 seconds (giving up to 20,775 Mining experience) before depleting their salt deposit. Each crablet has its own timer which will not halt once started, even if the player stops mining the crablet to mine another.

Dead moai

Dead moai

The Uncharted Isles can contain dead moais whose heads are bleeding out the island's anima, creating Ancestral energy springs, requring level 95 Divination to siphon from. 75 ancestral energy can be obtained from each spring, and there are four springs for a total of 300 ancestral energy.

It is possible for chronicle fragments to escape from the springs while harvesting energy. A Cyansoul Kakapo may occasionally be encountered near the springs.

Golden Bamboo

Golden Bamboo (tree)

The Uncharted Isles can contain Golden Bamboo, requiring level 96 Woodcutting to chop. A golden bamboo tree yields 100 golden bamboo (giving 65,550 Woodcutting experience) before depleting and turning into "bamboo stumps". A message will notify the player upon its depletion: "The bamboo plant has been exhausted for today."

Mushroom cluster

Main article: Mushroom cluster
Mushroom cluster

The Uncharted Isles can contain mushroom clusters, requiring level 94 Farming to forage. The cluster is depleted after obtaining 100 mushrooms from it.

7 different types of mushrooms, unique to the Uncharted Isles may be harvested from the mushroom cluster: Arc puffballs, Blushrooms, Honeyfungus, Inky caps, Russula, Sporcini, and Summertwirls.

Gloomshroom zygomites can be found from the clusters at a rate of 1/400.

Occasionally while foraging from the cluster, the player will be pricked by a thorn, dealing a small amount of damage and displaying the chat message: Ouch! You were pricked by a thorn.

Ornate tortle

Ornate tortle

The Uncharted Isles can contain ornate tortles, which can be hunted at level 96 Hunter with a tortle trap, which harmlessly holds them in place to allow for the collection of shell chippings. The chippings can be crafted into a bowl at level 92 Crafting. An ornate tortle colony yields 200–215 shiny shell chippings (giving up to 340,775 Hunter experience) before depleting. A message will notify the player upon its depletion: "The tortles are disgruntled by your traps and begin to disperse from the area."

On rare occasions, successful trappings may result in a tortle unearthing a taijitu or chimes from the sand.

Wobbegong

Main articles: Raw wobbegong and Wobbegong oil
Raw wobbegong detail

The Uncharted Isles can contain schools of wobbegong, requiring level 96 Fishing to catch. They are able to be cooked into wobbegong oil at level 96 Cooking, consuming two wobbegongs per oil. A fishing spot yields 100 wobbegong (giving 61,250 Fishing experience) before depleting. A message will notify the player upon its depletion: "The fishing spot has been exhausted for today. The wobbegongs are wobbegone."

Washed ashore

Treasure chest (uncharted isles) tier 2

A treasure chest found on an uncharted isle.

Items are often found washed ashore the coasts of Uncharted Isles. These items will persist as long as the player remains on the isle, and can be picked up or looted. As such, pick all of them up and bank them before starting on other resources. Upon revisiting a claimed isle, the player may notice new items washed ashore.

On rare occasions, players may find a treasure chest washed ashore on an isle. Looting the chest will award the player 1–7 taijitu and occasionally provide stoneberry or stormberry seeds. On long voyages, there is about a 33.33% chance that players can find a treasure chest with about a 50% chance for it to be a Tier 1 chest and about a 25% chance for it to be a Tier 2 chest or Tier 3 chest.[source needed] This averages about 0.9583 taijitu per long voyage.

Washed up supplies may also be found. No matter the size of the voyage, there is about a 20% chance that players can find washed up supplies on an isle.[source needed] This averages about 0.5 supplies per voyage.

Contract-only Items

Some items will only appear on uncharted isles when the player is given a contract that relates to them from Sojobo on Waiko. They will be marked on the Minimap with a Task map icon taskmaster icon whenever they appear. These include:

  • Nests, into which eggs may be placed and hatched. Eggs will also appear on the isle when these are found.
  • Summoning gongs, which may be struck.
  • Braziers, which may be lit with the use of Driftwood.
  • Safes, which may be cracked and opened.
  • Wooden tortems, which may be repaired.
  • Ritual circles, upon which kelp may be sacrificed. The kelp will be found on the ground on the same isle as the ritual circle.
  • Herb burners, which may be lit with Grimy herbs, found on the ground on the same isle as the burners.

Claiming an island

After completing the Flag Fall miniquest, players gain the ability to purchase claim island flags which can be used to claim an Uncharted Isle. Once the player finds a suitable island for themselves, they may plant the flag on the island, with a confirmation message being given before being planted. The island will not be lost upon leaving, and can be revisited at the cost of three supplies regardless of its size. Resources on the island will be regenerated daily, resetting at 00:00 (UTC).

When travelling to new unclaimed islands, it is recommended to keep at least one claim island flag in the bank in case the islands encountered have a greater number of, or more preferred resources than the player's previously claimed island.

Since islands cannot be claimed until Flag Fall is completed, it is advised to go on Short Junkets until five driftwood can be collected and given to Boni (rewards).

Strategies

It is generally advisable to claim the island from a long voyage due to the greater number of special resources, compared to an island from a median expedition or short junket. It is also advisable to claim islands with five special resources if able.

For players who wish to produce and sell shark soups, an island with alaea crablets, ornate tortles, and a school of wobbegong would be the ideal choice of resources; bundles of bamboo can be easily crafted on Waiko from the ample supply of bamboo found there, and Sliced mushrooms can be obtained via mushrooms from Goshima, or The Islands That Once Were Turtles. Alternatively, claiming an island with several groups of alaea crablets and access to ancestral energy would allow a player to transmute resources to the type they desired.

Customising an island

Once a player has claimed an island, they are able to add decorations to it. Items to customise the player's island may be bought from Boni's Waiko Reward Shop. All customisations on previously claimed uncharted isles are lost if they are not reclaimed when the player claims a new uncharted isle.

Trivia

  • Because the islands are uncharted, the world map cannot be opened while on an uncharted isle.
    • Trying to open the world map will give the player one of these notifications: "These regions have not been mapped yet.", "This uncharted isle has not been mapped.", "What part of 'uncharted' don't you understand?", followed by "(You cannot open your world map while in the uncharted isles.)".
    • Instead, it can be helpful to put the interface in edit mode and stretch the minimap out. This can reveal a much larger part of the local area, including relevant icons, items, and NPC dots.
  • The "washed ashore" items completely ignore boundaries (aside from water) when spawning. This can result in the items spawning in trees, on rocks/bushes, under supplies crates and so forth. The items can still be picked up, though. Treasure chests and supplies are not indicated by dots on the minimap.
  • It is possible for the player to land on the island inside of a rock. This does not impede gameplay.
