Turmoil ancient prayer
A player activating Turmoil

Turmoil is a prayer in the Ancient Curses prayer book, which is unlocked after completing The Temple at Senntisten. Requiring 95 Prayer to activate, Turmoil has the highest Prayer requirement of all prayers in the game. It can boost the user's Attack, Strength, and Defence significantly when in combat against powerful opponents, making it the strongest melee-boosting prayer in the game.

NotesEdit

  • When in combat against multiple opponents, Turmoil calculates its additional bonuses according to the strongest opponent's levels.

LimitationsEdit

Turmoil's primary limitations are its high Prayer requirement, that it cannot be used alongside any Sap Curses or Leech Curses, and that its usefulness is limited against opponents that do not use melee. Because some monsters only use Magic and/or Ranged, they are treated as having Attack and Strength levels of 1. Therefore, Turmoil will not offer its additional boost to Attack and Strength against such opponents, although Defence will receive its boost as normal. Some examples of popular monsters that do not use melee are aquanites, waterfiends, spiritual mages, aberrant spectres, Dagannoth Supreme, Dagannoth Prime, and the Phoenix.

However, since the Evolution of Combat, a range equivalent (Anguish) and a mage equivalent (Torment) of Turmoil have been released.

Turmoil and PietyEdit

Turmoil is noteworthy for being the "strongest" prayer in the game in terms of melee boosts. It is comparable to Piety, although the two differ in a number of ways. Piety requires completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds activity, 70 prayer and 70 Defence. Turmoil requires completion of The Temple at Senntisten, and 95 prayer. Piety is a prayer, and Turmoil is a curse. As such, you can not access useful curses while using Piety, nor useful prayers while using Turmoil. Piety's bonuses are constant and independent of the user's opponents in combat, if any. Piety is ideal for offensive prayer flashing because turmoil when not flashed does not target the opponents defence and melee stats. After at least one hit with Turmoil active, the target will begin to lose defensive power and offensive power with melee. Turmoil's drain rate (300 points per minute) vs Piety (at 333 points per minute). This makes Turmoil ideal for fast paced combat against high level opponents.

Advantages of Piety are:

  • Much easier to get.
  • Allows use of other prayers.

Advantages of Turmoil are:

  • More powerful against higher level opponents.
  • Allows use of other curses.
  • Slower Prayer point drain.

CalculationsEdit

This page explains how the game calculates the overall bonuses given by the Turmoil curse.

Note that the floor function means to round down to the next integer.

For Attack and Defence: Bonus\ \% = floor\left (\frac{100\times floor(0.15\times Opponent\ level)}{Your\ level}\right ) + 15

For Strength: Bonus\ \% = floor\left (\frac{100\times floor(0.1\times Opponent\ level)}{Your\ level}\right ) + 23

The resulting values are percentages and can then be multiplied by the user's skill level in order to find the effective skill level.

ExampleEdit

A player named Elfinlocks challenges a player named Pee Ker XXL at the Duel Arena. Elfinlocks has 76 Attack, 77 Strength, and 75 Defence; Pee Ker XXL has 65 attack, 80 Strength, and 50 Defence. They begin a duel, and Elfinlocks activates Turmoil.

In order to calculate Elfinlocks's total bonus to Attack, the game takes Pee Ker XXL's Attack level (65) and multiplies it by 15% to get 9.75, which is rounded down to 9. Next, the game figures out how much of a percentage increase 9 levels is to Elfinlocks's 76 Attack; it does this by dividing 9 by 76 to get 11.8%, rounded down to 11. The value 11 is added to Turmoil's initial Attack bonus of 15%, giving a total of +26% to Elfinlocks's Attack level. She now hits as accurately as someone with 95 Attack.

The process is the same for Strength and Defence. Turmoil adds 8 levels to Elfinlocks's 77 Strength, which is 10% of her 77 Strength: a total Strength boost of 33%, giving her an effective Strength level of 102. Turmoil adds 7 levels to her 75 Defence, an increase of 9%: a total Defence boost of 24%, giving her an effective Defence level of 93. Overall, her Prayer window reports that her boosts to Attack/Strength/Defence are +26%/+33%/+24%, respectively. Elfinlocks is easily able to defeat her opponent in the duel.
