- Spade
- Boots of lightness
- Teleport Runes or teletabs
- Ring of duelling and other teleport items.
- Dramen/Lunar staff - especially useful for many level 2 clues.
- Some money (needed to buy some equipment for emote clues)
- (Super) energy potions, Explorer's ring 1, 2 or 3, or take a dip in the salt water spring at Oo'glog before starting.
- Here is a tip if using a familiar, when fighting a Double agent, Saradomin Wizard, or Zamorak Wizard and in a multi combat area, it is advised to repeatedly hit the "Call Familiar" button. Otherwise, the familiar might attack and cause the agent or wizard to flee. This just results in one having to restart the fight.

[edit] Anagrams
Some clues can contain anagrams, and the higher level clues will result in a challenge scroll. All anagrams lead to NPCs around RuneScape, just talk to them with the clue scroll in your inventory. The solution to challenge scrolls are in the next section. It should be noted that anagrams may contain false spaces not found in the decoded name.
Anagram clues only appear in level 2 and 3 clues.
[edit] Challenge scrolls
Certain NPCs will give players challenge scrolls with one of the following questions. After reading the question, speak to the NPC again to give the answer. These only appear in level 2 and 3 clues.

[edit] Cryptics
Cryptics are common in higher level clues, they either lead you to a person, to crates, or to dig somewhere in RuneScape. Level 3 cryptics that lead you to a person normally result in a Puzzle box, and some clues require you to obtain a key from a nearby monster to access the location you need. Note: It is possible to get the same clue twice in some rare occasions.
[edit] Chest Keys
Sometimes, you will need a key to open a locked chest or drawer. There will be a clue telling you where to get it. The key is a drop only when carrying the clue scroll. It disappears when used to open the chest or drawer. It is possible to get the same clue scroll 3 times.
[edit] Emote clues
Emote clues involve wearing certain items in a particular location and doing an emote. They feature in all levels of clue, and most (but not all) items required for the emote clues can be obtained in shops. Uri is the one to give you your next clue or prize. He normally gives you a casket. A list of all the items you need to solve every clue can be found at List of items needed for emote clues
[edit] Co-ordinates
While doing co-ordinates, you must have a chart, sextant, and watch in your inventory. Think of it as the RuneScape equivalent of geocaching. If you don't have those, talk to the professor in the Observatory to get the chart, Brother Kojo at the Clock Tower for the watch, and Murphy at Port Khazard for the sextant (note: You must talk to the professor in the observatory first, you don't need to have completed the observatory quest to get the items but if you start it you must finish it before he lets you claim/reclaim them (If you are reclaiming them you don't need to talk to the professor again unless it's about the chart)). You will also need a spade to dig up the chest.
If you're doing a level 3 scroll, be prepared for combat, as you must defeat an NPC upon digging at the specified location. If you're in the Wilderness, it will be a level 65 Zamorak wizard who can use Flames of Zamorak. If you're in a non-Wilderness area, you will be attacked by a much stronger level 108 Saradomin Mage who can use Saradomin Strike and wields a super poisoned Dragon Dagger. If you do not kill the mage before attempting to dig again another mage may appear at which point all mages will need to be killed before digging again. To kill the Saradomin wizard it is recommended that you bring at least one prayer or super restore potion, wear the best dragon hide you can and protect melee while ranging/meleeing it. Do whatever works best for you; maging is not recommended. You can alternatively wear your best melee defence armour while protecting from mage, however if you chose to do this then you will need to bring an anti poison potion. ALWAYS bring a one-click teleport and have fully charged prayer.
Coordinate clues do not appear in level 1 clues. The coordinates 0,0 centre at the Observatory. Top of the world (northern Iceberg) is about 30 North, southern Pest Control about 18 South, western Lunar Isle about 12 West, and eastern Mos Le'Harmless about 40 East. Minutes refers to the individual steps inside the degree. There are 60 minutes/steps in each degree.

[edit] Maps
Maps are found at all levels of clue scroll. You need to take a spade to the place indicated on the map and dig there. Maps are group into those with crates or X's. X maps have buildings, fish, or no buildings.
[edit] Puzzle boxes
Puzzle boxes are given during level 3 clue scrolls in response to a simple clue or an anagram.
