A compass is a part of an elite treasure trail. This update was released on 4 August 2010.
Note: Any of these clues can trigger a dangerous Guthix wizard.
Strategy
When the player clicks on a compass elite clue, the screen will centre north and point the direction of the location. It only gives direction, not distance. Therefore, the most common method for completing compass clues effectively and efficiently is by triangulation. This is done by distance teleportation around the world map, eventually giving a rough indicator on the map where the compass is pointing to (e.g. lodestone teleport to Taverly; if the compass points west, the player should use a lodestone to the west of Taverly; if the compass points east, the player should use a lodestone to the east of Taverly). Once the area for the compass location to possibly be in has been determined, the player should then follow that route.
When the player is standing at the correct location, an X will appear in the middle of the compass interface. Once the player has found the spot, digging may spawn a Guthix wizard and/or complete this part of the treasure trail. Bringing a Meerkat familiar with the scrolls and using the scroll effect eliminates the need to kill a Guthix wizard if one spawns.
