Total level is the sum of the levels of all of a player's Skills. The current maximum for members is 2376, which has only been achieved by 382 players (as of 6 November 2009). The maximum for free players is 1494. Total level is a common way for players to compare their stats.
The opening page on the Hiscores ranks players by their total level, then by experience. Before the Summoning update (15 January 2008), the top overall generally went by experience as much as level. The number one player wouldn't have a higher level than the number two player, but certainly more experience. Currently to be in the hiscore requires more than 792 total levels, or exactly 792 level with more than 3,539,538 experience as of 22 of September 2009. (Rounded up)
After the updates on 21 May 2008, players would be informed when their total levels reached important milestones. Free players who used to be members would still receive a message stating that they've reached the highest total level possible on free-to-play worlds when they reached a total level of 1494. When Players receive this message there is also a short animation with 3 large fireworks shooting out from the player.
In RuneScape Classic, the maximum total level was 1,782 (1395 for free players); with the addition of Runecrafting (1881), Slayer (1980), Farming (2079), Construction (2178), Hunter (2277), and the newest skill, Summoning, brought the maximum total levels to 2,376.
For some reason, with the new update on 2 September 2009, the total level increased for some people by one level. This made the highest total level 2377. This could be the sign of the new skill being released soon. This only happened for a few hours before it was corrected by Jagex.
On 9 November 2009, Jagex released two Skill total worlds for both free and members. Only players with a total level of 1000 or over may play on those servers.
