Tortured souls are ghostly apparitions which can be found north of the Ectofuntus and west of Port Phasmatys, outside the city walls. Their appearance, location, name and speech imply that they are outcasts from Port Phasmatys who, being trapped between life and death due to the actions of Necrovarus (rectified by the player during Ghosts Ahoy), have lost their minds. When killed they sometimes say, rather ironically, "You cannot defeat the undead, mortal!"
As they are a type of ghost, they can be used as a higher level substitute on ghost Slayer tasks assigned by Turael/Spria and Mazchna. This is especially useful since the update which made it impossible to kill the ghosts on Melzar's Maze, which were previously used in this role. Since Tortured Souls are undead, the Salve amulet is effective against them.
