Torstol seed

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

Torstol seeds are used in Farming skill to grow Torstol. The required level to grow torstol is 85 Farming; the seed must be planted in a herb patch to grow.

After about 80 minutes it should be ready to harvest giving about 5 grimy herbs (if supercompost was used before the plant or with Fertile soil spell) or more.

[edit] Market

The Grand Exchange Database price graph showing the price trend from mid-January to mid-February.

Torstol seeds have recently risen dramatically in price. Some have speculated that they have done so as a result of the Farming "Skill of the Month" competition for February on a RuneScape fansite, in which contestants aim to gain the most amount of Farming experience in one month. However, prices have continued to rise in March and April.

Another explanation suggested is that those seeking herblore training are creating demand by trying to level using Zamorak brews, since if one buys the grimy torstol and jangerberries at max Grand Exchange sale prices and sells the Zamorak brew at maximum price, it is one of only two potions that produce a profit. This would naturally drive up grimy torstol prices.

However, this has not happened. Grimy torstol prices have not kept up with the rise in torstol seed prices, and now is one of two herbs that is less expensive than the seed, the other being snapdragon.

As such, it currently makes no economic sense for most farmers to grow torstol, nor does it make sense for them to gain experience from growing them.

Farmers growing 35 grimy torstols lose approximately 35000 coins per crop run and gain roughly 8000 Farming experience, but those growing 35 grimy snapdragons make a profit 100000+ coins and gain nearly 4000 Farming experience. This more than offsets the price of 3 or 4 maple seeds that combined offer 10000 more experience.

While perhaps some high level farmers with very high level herblore are looking to train both skills - growing torstol, buying jangerberries and selling them as a Zamorak brew roughly breaks even - with the profits generated from 35 grimy snapdragons, someone seeking to train herblore can simply buy additional grimy snapdragons and red spider's eggs on the Grand Exchange, produce 100 super restore potions, and rapidly gain 15000 herblore experience instead of the 6000 or so from Zamorak brews.

Thus, there seems to be little economic or experience incentive for most players to purchase torstol seeds at current price.
