The Ritual

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

The Ritual of Rejuvenation takes place at the spot the Mahjarrat race refer to as The North. It's referred to as such because of the simple fact that it lies North, in the icy parts of the Fremennik lands.

In The Ritual, the Mahjarrat revive themselves by fighting each other in The North. The reason for doing this is that, over the years (each 500 years, it seems), the Mahjarrat get continually weaker and more "skeletal" as they use their magical abilities. This is exemplified of when you find the Mahjarrat Jhallan frozen, shapeshifted into a mythical creature called a Muspah and unconscious in a magical block of ice during the quest Tale of the Muspah. When you free him he is almost totally devoid of any power because of being trapped in a shapeshifted form for so long, and is too weak to fight in the Ritual without risking being chosen by the other Mahjarrat as their next victim due to his below-average power, because the loser of the fight in the Ritual is killed, and is sacrificed to refuel the remaining Mahjarrat with their power. Therefore, the player helps Jhallan freeze himself into another block of ice in a cave directly below the Ritual site while waiting for the Ritual, seeing as anyone nearby when the Ritual happens will be refueled. A Mahjarrat called Lamistard tried to do that in the 16th Ritual by digging a series of tunnels below the Ritual site, but he accidentally ended up into the cellar of Zemouregal's fort close to the site, prompting Zemouregal himself to keep him as a prisoner until the Ritual to make sure he would be there to fight. As a result, Lamistard was killed and sacrificed during the Ritual to refuel his fellow Mahjarrat.

There have currently been 17 Rituals in Gielinor, with the 18th apparently drawing near.

According to the Chaos Elemental, the Ritual happens during syzygy [1] (when stars are aligned).

Dr. Nabanik has also mentioned that a Fremennik actually saw the ritual-but he had no idea just what he had seen. Apparently, his description of the ritual refers to skies "dripping with venom and fire," and the earth "twisting into grotesque forms with mouths that chewed at the roots of trees that bled".
