The North is spoken of by many Mahjarrat as a place to which they are heading, perhaps to battle, plan further actions against the citizens of Gielinor, or perform a certain "Ritual", mentioned twice in-game: Once in the Shadow sword miniquest and during The Tale of the Muspah, spoken of the ritual by Jhallan. Azzanadra in the Postbag from the Hedge speaks of it, too. [1].

The North is widely believed to be connected with the return of Zaros, a return which could possibly result in another God Wars. The exact location of the North was previously unknown, but those studying the Mahjarrat speculated that it was located somewhere in the Wilderness, or much north of it. During The Tale of the Muspah, its location was shown to be in an area north-east of Trollweiss Mountain and west of the Frozen Waste Plateau, that can be travelled to from the Trollweiss Hunter area. Zemouregal's fort is also in The North, as revealed in The Curse of Arrav.

The possible need in which Mahjarrat are heading there is a need to perform the Ritual, used to either wake up the Mahjarrat in death-sleep, or put them into it. This is hinted in Postbag from the Hedge[2], as well as a dialogue from General Khazard, given during the Shadow Sword miniquest, that it is connected with alignment of planets, called "syzygy", which is a real-world term for an astronomical alignment[3]

It is worth noting Romily Weaklax comes from "the North". It is, however, unknown if this North is the same as the term used by the Mahjarrat.

[edit] The Ritual of Rejuvenation

The North is the location of a ritual in which many of the Mahjarrat partake, to renew their energy and strengthen their power. Apparently throughout a Mahjarrat's life their energy begins to fade and so does their appearance when this time draws near.

Jhallan explains to an adventurer during The Tale of the Muspah that the life of one Mahjarrat must be sacrificed in order to complete the Ritual. A large battle between all Mahjarrat occurs and presumably the loser of that battle is the one who is sacrificed. Any Mahjarrat nearby during the Ritual will be rejuvenated even if they do not participate in the battle.

Jhallan is currently planning to exploit this ritual by hiding himself underground in the Mahjarrat Ritual site cavern, in a cave in The North. Before he goes into hibernation, Jhallan reveals that there is some sort of ritual stone located immediately above the cavern.
