[edit] Merge

Each of the server blackout articles should be merged, because there are getting to be too many and the occurrences aren't particularly unique. In addition, I do recall there being other server blackouts years ago before anyone thought to make note of them here. Skill 01:58, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

There have been at least 6 blackouts since I started, this definitely isn't the third. Lexmarkmantalk  02:00, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I agree with you! patninja 02:01, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

this is wierd though how can the friend server go down first, watch out for people tellying to ice plateau - greenthunder 9:06pm(ET)

Notice the adds are even down, This is defiantly a black out and not some update. Image:Bunny_ears.PNG

Do we need a page on every blackout? This is prob not the third either Image:Wintumber_tree.PNG Atlandy 03:37, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it should stay as is,and yes,we do need a page for each blackout.Prince12th 03:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Why is this labeled the 3rd? I've been playing since 2002 and they happen from time to time. Either they have to be researched/corrected or merged to make the wiki correctImage:Wintumber_tree.PNG Atlandy 04:02, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I have come up with and put into effect a solution for the fact that these are definitely not the first, second, and third blackouts ever. I have renamed them the first, second, and third blackouts of 2007. From now on, when a new article is added for a new blackout, make sure you put "of <year>" at the end of it. This way, it is completely accurate. For example, if another blackout occurs in december, it should be called Fourth server blackout of 2007. If there is one in February next year, the article should be named First server blackout of 2008. Obese Potato 05:20, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

The same thing happens in every blackout. Login servers go down, people get kicked, the main page shows 0, wild rumours about a glitch or keylogger circulate, the servers come back on, a riot starts. Do we need a separate page about each one? Skill 05:33, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I say keep them all having their own articles. 22px?Chiafriend12Better than rune! 05:40, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Why not simply have them in separate sections of the same article? This way, we don't have to explain the details of a blackout repeatedly in several articles. In every instance the main page shows 0 players, why repeat that three times? Skill 05:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Though these are events and not items, I say "keep" because of/per RuneScape:Granularity. 22px?Chiafriend12Better than rune! 06:40, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Sort of forgot about this discussion. Anyways, I don't think granularity is supposed to apply in cases like this. The idea of the policy was to allow easy searching for a particular item, rather than to make everything separate. I see no reason in this case not to merge the articles, as it's a better way to present the information. Skill 06:03, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
I have to agree with Skill, the information would be presented better in a merged page. I'd rather search "blackout" on the wiki and find all the blackouts recorded on one page, instead of being directed to a disambiguation page that would show multiple pages of the blackouts that have occured in the past, over years. As I DK 19:09, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Another reason to merge the articles is that each of them has pretty much the same picture of the worlds going offline. Again, there's no reason to repeat information in five articles when we could just merge them into one. Skill 06:14, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I have to agree with Skill here.. Merge BenTalkContributionsEditcountRfA 06:16, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Keep I agree with Chia Chicken7 10:16, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Merge but keep details of each blackout in the one article. It would be much simpler that way. Just put each one in different subsections.  C Teng talk 01:02, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Merge Most of the Articles are stubs, and nothing really was different in any one of them. Image:Red halloween mask.PNG‎ NakaXeta (talk) (contribs) Image:Dragon scimitar.png

Keep Per the reasons listed above. Sir Lenehan 23:16, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Another RSII blackout?

I was playing Runescape earlier today when I went outside hung some lights came back and it would not log in. Kept saying no available server etc. I can open up the worlds page even and it shows 0 people playing on all worlds. It also shows 0 on the initial login page.

[edit] First Server Blackout of 2007

From Dark RuneScape Wiki:

"On June 2nd, 2007, in the late afternoon-late evening, the RuneScape servers were all offline. This was the First Server Blackout. JaGeX said that it was there was a heavy storm that downed power to the main JaGeX building, causing loss of connection with all other servers and an auto-shutdown of every server. The weather reason was false, though many news stations in Europe and North America commented on a storm.

The first server blackout occured because an unnamed player had found a way to duplicate the World 111 Glitch. And thus, JaGeX blocked access to all servers to prevent the event from occuring once again."

Location: see here

Does anyone have any verification of this? The Dark RuneScape Wiki seems a reliable site, just less used. -- Gaz Lloyd 20:03, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Friday June 13th, 2008

Another server blackout today, 0 people playing!

Hey here is the official Jagex Statement:

"13-Jun-2008RuneScape Server Problems Telstra, one of our service providers, is currently experiencing technical difficulties. As a result, you will not be able to access the RuneScape game and a number of our website features. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we are assured our service provider is working hard to rectify this fault."

Plus it IS Friday the 13th =Þ-GNR Shad0w Runescape Addict

Theunknown one 15:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Nah, it's just a friend server shutdown. Syugecinspam

Theres one world offline and all other worlds 0 people, what do you call that? and you cant get on the forums, just like other blackouts. Theunknown one 15:36, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Ugh, didn't Jagex say they'd do all they could to stop these server blackouts from occurring? Luckily I wasn't doing anything dangerous... Master of Agility.Usurper FujiI like big grapes. 15:38, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Is this a precedent for the Riot article to be summarised as I had it the other day?Planeshifted 15:43, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Theunknown one. Its definitely a blackout. Anyone else think that the main thing blame will be "Friday 13th"? At least wildy is a little safer nowadays anyways, no pkers, if anyone tried to telegroup ice plateau. Quests FTW! Gaz Lloyd Calcs!Awesome 15:49, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

PHEW! i was about killing waterfiends for my slayer TASK! luckily i was not there yet... but what's happening? im sure it is a cut of electricity or something... or a server blackout like you said guys i hope they can fix it fasT!...Johnjack922

16:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
I was killing Green Dragons before the blackout. Are revenants and other NPCs still active? If they are, I have the feeling I'll log back in with only 100k worth of equipment. May be coloured blue in the near future.earth(t)

Even the forums are offline!

I was killing turoths for slayer and in the middle of fighting one with my heath low! does this mean I may be dead when i log back on? i hope not i already lost 3.6m of items in GW do to lag last month :( Bartizle76 16:25, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Umm whoever edited the main article is wrong, the game hasn't been down since 7:30gmt and down for eleven hours lol, it went down about 16:30 GMT and has so far been down about an hour :\

Mabye there is a bug that they are working toward getting rid of? Or mabye a suprise update?

[edit] 347 people playing!

About this 347 people playing even though all servers say 0, is there even a remote possibility there are 347 JaGex Mods playing?

  • No, it means the system is unable to refresh properly and is returning a cached copy of the page.Planeshifted 15:56, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

What makes me laugh is that Runescape Classic servers now have 722 players on Classic 1 and 457 players on Classic 2. And thanks for clearing that up Planeshifted. Theunknown one 15:57, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

How long do server blackouts take?? Image:Bronze Scimitar.PNGUser:Chicken l0v3rImage:Bronze platebody.PNG

It could take a couple hours. =/ Master of Agility.Usurper FujiI like big grapes. 16:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

This is most certainly a blackout as the forums,Runescape,Funorb,hi scores and even the advertisements are down... Runescape Classic is down as well I couldn't get on it.

[edit] funorb also down

Seeing as this is my first blackout (not a good thing) i thought i might be able to play funorb while Runescape is down but soon found out that funorb is down also. * my second thought was, could this be a large update that takes a while. * third thought, why would fun orb and runescape be down for a update. --mr.twee 16:00, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Well if it was an update then surely they'd announce it on the main page beforehand?

yea! im sure it's a huge problem needed to fix as fast as possible all we can do now is wait! wow runescape and funorb down.. real loss of cash for runescape.com Johnjack922 16:03, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

No loss of cash for them... they already have our money...

[edit] graphical update

Hey any1 has any clues that this could be the big graphical updadte?

Nah, that's in early July. This could be related to it though. Master of Agility.Usurper FujiI like big grapes. 16:04, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

yeh i hope so =\ Image:Santa hat.PNGUser:Chicken l0v3rImage:Dragon scimitar.png

runescape graphical update is an early july release... you can read that at the behind the scene plus they are working these 2 weeks for it and why would be funorb servers down? So it is not! probably a big problem...Johnjack922 16:10, 13 June 2008 (UTC) (i hope they write something to apologize! like always lol)

They should have told us SOMETHING by now, its been more than an hour and a half, I'm getting a little angry now, my internet connection is unreliable and today I have it good and I'm still unable to play >.<Theunknown one 16:41, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

If this is a update it better be good cause i don't wana wait over an hour for a stupid small update.Image:Dragon scimitar.pngUser:Chicken l0v3rImage:Santa hat.PNG

It is annoying... I'll go eat my lunch. Seriously, I do think that this Friday the 13th has something to do with it. Like the 666 Massacre...and now a server blackout just HAPPENS to occur on a Friday 13th. Master of Agility.Usurper FujiI like big grapes. 16:51, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

It all depends when you logged out, I logged out (not kicked off) early so yes it has been an hour and a half for me. And its sure that the people that have died and lost stuff to this blackout, there will most likely be a riot. And I dont think this is an update or there would have been a System Update timer. This is just a plain blackout. Theunknown one 16:52, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

This has happened before on dates other than Friday the 13th. It's a coincidence. As is everything that anyone ever attributed to this stupid date. Chocotard 16:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

then whe should believe the firday the 13th is an unlucky day for runescape!Johnjack922 16:56, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

What was the last unlucky thing that happened on RuneScape on Friday the 13th? Chocotard 16:56, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Man this is really annoying. I at least want some news from jagex! }=[ Image:Dragon scimitar.pngUser:Chicken l0v3rImage:Santa hat.PNG

Quick lunch there. This is my opinion, I'm not superstitious or anything, but I think Friday the 13th is unlucky. In real life, I remember playing basketball in middle school and falling down, scraping a heckload of skin off my shoulder and making it bleed. That was on Friday the 13th. On the next Friday the 13th, I fell and hit my forehead against a wall. That hurt a lot. Ever since, I've believed that Friday the 13th is unlucky, and the only thing I think is unlucky. Master of Agility.Usurper FujiI like big grapes. 17:06, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I had something like that last friday the 13th i died cause of a lagg on rs and lost my 10m! Image:Dragon scimitar.pngUser:Chicken l0v3rImage:Santa hat.PNG

NEWS UPDATE! They are aware of the problem. Blame Telstra. Thank you for those 2 edit conflicts. Chocotard 17:09, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

From a post in the Forum:

We have been experiencing some technical difficulties which would have resulted in some of you losing connection from the game and our forums.

This issue has now been resolved! Please accept our apologies.

Your account may be showing as logged in still. Don't panic, this is just a side-effect of the server being down; you will be able to log in again as normal soon. During this time your character will not be in the game so you have no fear of dying or losing items from this server problem.

In the event of a server crash your account will be returned to play with the most recent version of that servers 'saved game' file. As such any trades, training, questing, or items gained that happened before the crash will be undone as your file returns to the most recent backup. It is not possible for us to return anything undone from this crash but as these saves happen every 15 minutes we are sure you will not have lost too much of your time and effort.

Thank you and apologies for the disruption and any inconvenience caused.

noone has lost anything ;) --r1ky | Talk | Contributions | Best wiki ever 17:40, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hacked?

The bottom topic on this page states that there is speculation that Runescape will be "hacked". Are the any sources to back that claim? If not, I will delete in 3 days.

It was just nonsense.--Richard 18:42, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

I humbly beg to differ on that, it was apparent from some users that several blackouts were caused by the user "Freya" because of her anger and frustration with updates and Jagex in general. Freya was an extremely devoted player, as I know a user by the name of Dramateyes that is in touch with her personally, and was also a programmer for computer businesses with that user. Both of them were also white/blue hat hackers (testing computer security and accessing computers to fix them), although it was reported by a user teamed up with Freya that "Dramateyes" was not involved in this. 50 others that apparently disabled and sabotaged Jagex's firewall have claimed this as well. I do not know that anything in this theory can be substantiated fully, but that Freya who was ranked #40 overall and was viewed in the hiscores for something like 2-6 consecutive years is now banned, and this happened recently after the blackout in which Falador was experiencing technical difficulties. Dramateyes I know can not claim anything about this either, because it was apparently hacked along with a system crash on her PC, so I dunno if she can be reached or not. If anyone can get sources on this, we may be able to verify it.
