When you can't see the Mercenary Adventurer, log out and back in, now you can start the quest...

(speaking out of experience)

Buzz (Talk#P ) 14:49, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

I am surprised that the Shades of Mort'ton Quest is not required to start this quest, given that pyre logs are required to cremate the Vyre corpse. Is this not required because the sacred oil or the pyre logs are available on the Grand Exchange, so a player is not required to make their own? Just a curiosity. I wanted to know if anyone else found this yet

I noticed some vyrewatchs not in Morytania, but near the boat, east of the bank, went to do a bit more research and there were tons of them! and i went to Morytania to kill them, when they're closer to a bank than usual :)  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 168.184.222.114 (talk) on 14:18, 28 April 2008 (UTC).

Yeah, I saw them too and was a bit suprised, but figured they were there so you had easier access to your bank. Please remember to sign your posts too, with 4 tildes(~)24.123.205.34 14:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Flail Experience

I've seen this on the official forums, and believe that we should include some information about it:

The more you use your Ivandis Flail, the more 'experienced' you get with it. Specifically, after a certain number of vyrewatch corpses cremated (i am almost 100% sure it's 50) your character improves with the flail, i.e., hits more accurately and with more damage. You get more experienced with your flail every 50 corpses cremated to a total of 500 corpses. Strangely, this increase cannot be measured, as the base statistic bonuses of the flail do not change. There was extensive research done on the forums, and i believe that the max hi of many players increases quite a bit, until it capped at around 25/26. more information/research may be needed, unless the original thread still exists. I've never edited here before, so I don't know your rules on contribution, but while doing this quest I noticed that the two prayer-swapping guards toward the beginning of the quest can effectively be taken down with little effort by just dual-wielding a melee weapon and a crossbow (with bolts). The guard continues to swap prayers based on the last attack that hit him, but at least one attack style continues to damage him (due to him only being able to pray against one combat style).

I've edited the article to reflect this (as anonymous; I just made my account now). Feel free to remove it if there's an issue. 0x539 (talk) 05:54, April 5, 2013 (UTC)

Fighting bodyguards

Just to have it pointed out, although it literally doesn't state that the guards are unbeatable unless you swap attack-styles, they can still be beat even if they have their protection prayer up against said type of combat. There is a great emphasis on just the swapping, to put such an emphasis makes it seem there's more to the mechanics than it regularly is, so I suggest and simply will add a parenthesis to this section that it's not a must in order to defeat them.Barbapopo (talk) 20:47, January 30, 2014 (UTC)

The Protection Prayers used to completely block all damage from one kind of combat style, which made it so that you did need to change combat styles. Change it if you want. Snowskeeper---Till Hell Freezes Over. (talk) 23:25, January 30, 2014 (UTC)

First, I don't think bringing a different attack style should be required. I brought a full set of ranged gear but the fights were comically easily. Maybe if I was of a combat level around 70, the gear would have been helpful. I was just trying to save others some time by moving it out of the required items list, because having it in the required items implies that is neccesary regardless of circumstances. This is also consistent with (at least some) other guides, in which combat gear is in the recommended items section rather than the required; even if one was combat level 70, not having a different attack style would just make the fight harder. If it made the fight impossible and thus the quest incompleteable, then yes, it would be a required item. Having it in the recommended items will let readers decide for themselves if the gear is needed since the list of required enemies to kill is also provided and conveniently lists the levels of the enemies.

The required items also lists teak pyre logs "or higher", which is a bit ambiguous as it doesn't make clear if it can be any log, teak or better, or any pyre log, teak or better. Perhaps a solution would be "Pyre logs, teak or better", but I'm not going to bother; seems almost every edit I've made so far has been reverted, so people here don't seem to agree with me.

Also, the bolding isn't done "randomly." Things tend to be bolded when they are of importance. I bolded things which were of importance if one wishes to complete the quest. I did or almost did miss some of the things I bolded, and it was quite annoying to have to go back. Sure, some of it is my fault; if I had read the guide word by word, then I would not have missed these things. However, one builds a tendancy to skip over things since the guides include summaries of the plot or dialogue, which is redudant if one is actually reading the dialogue in-game. Perhaps bolding was not the best way to make these things stand out more, but I could not think of a more simple yet effective method. Am I just being blind to something? Can someone explain how my bolding has harmed the article more than it has benefited it? Is it just the bolding, or do people also disagree that effort should not be made, in at least some other manner, to make the things which I have bolded more clear or prominent in the guide?  Mark Koz (talk) 00:55, November 22, 2015 (UTC)

Well, while you are correct that the fight is ridiculously easy, your opponents still use prayers, meaning you have to bring two attack styles to defeat them (unless you one-hit them...which is unlikely). I'll reword the pyre logs thingy. As for the bolding, I sort of agree with your point, but it's not really common practice to make entire phrases bold. Maybe adding "Note:" or using italics would be more consistent with other quest guides, while still having the desired effect? 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 09:58, November 22, 2015 (UTC)
I've made some changes. Is this OK? 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 10:03, November 22, 2015 (UTC)
I think that gets the point across. I'm new to contributing to this wiki, so I do not know all the formalities or how to be consistent with other pages. As for the prayers, do they not just reduce damage by 50%? If so, this means they aren't invulnerable to the attack style they pray against, thus a different attack style would not be needed and would only be recommended for lower levels that don't hit too high as it is. I can't speak for lower levels though as I was way overqualified for this quest (about 120 cb.) Anyway, I will not dwell on that any longer and I'll leave it to others to decide; it's only a minor inconvenience to get combat gear out of the bank and inventory space isn't an issue in this quest anyway.
