Possible magic training?Edit

Would it be possible for two players with high levels of magic to go to the wilderness in a secluded spot or in the duel arena and train magic by attuning each others' staffs to the same spell (like Fire Surge, Ice Barrage, etc.)?


The runes used would be compensated when absorbed by the staff, resulting in low-effort "splash xp"


Can anyone think of a reason why this wouldn't work?

Just got the staff, after being barraged for about 10-20 times, i had not recieved any charges yet. Maybe it's disfunctional, i will go through more extensive testing but i can for certain say that Group Vengeance is bugged. With the new information given, I'm speculating that the staff could potentially be brought to Soul Wars to rake in some free runes given the number of barragers in there. It wont be fast but hey if you can tank the hits well, you get the free runes. Also if a barrage spell is cast on 9 people with the stick, the amount of runes generated will be 9 times. -- A minor thing to add, it could prove really effective for gathering items in odd places, such as Waterbirth Island, as it would save inventory spots. Wondering if it can be used for Slayer Dart as well. And a Barrows method could be to Fire Surge with Blood Barrage on this staff as healing.

I dont think you can cast with the staff on the incorrect spellbook, i never saw an option outside of the current spellbook to cast the spell. For example, in order to cast the spell you would need to click on the spell icon, without the spell book, there would be no spell icon to click on. Wouldnt the fact that you are wearing this in clan wars mean you can't wear the flag at the same time? Kind of makes the comment about castle wars useless. Mathis0620 16:16, May 1, 2012 (UTC)


--I can see their point Mathis0620, a major factor in Castle Wars is the running to the flag and running back, this would help with the former.

Borrowed Power Edit

Anybody know if this works with Borrowed Power? -Omega Haxors

from what I can tell, GRS > Borrowed Power overall.

GRS: less useful weapon in stats, requires high Runecrafting level and activity participation, really only saves inventory space since spellbook must be selected

Borrowed Power: Far less useful necklace, requires 99 Magic and at least two days of activity participation, still requires extra runes just to cast the spell, limited array of spell selection, a few levels down is Spellbook Swap

I may have missed some details or had a wrong detail somewhere, but that's basically it, from what I've read. And if the staff can be charged with all rune-only spells (including Spellbook Swap), then I would think that Borrowed Power is now pretty much obsolete.98.249.218.100 21:24, May 1, 2012 (UTC)


Such a shame. I really wanted to see the effects of casting spells through the staff and capacator. The ability to use High alch through the staff or get creative and save all inventory slots at the cost of a weapon and necklace slot would be neat, expecially with Home Teleport.

When trying to Alch withh the greater runic staff (charged with high alchemy) in the Asagarnian Resource dungeon, it refuses to work with the charged staff. Can someone find out if this is a glitch or intended by Jagex? Thanks :). Naetwan, 12:51pm June 11, (2012 UTC)


Any word on the exact protect value on the staff? From testing it with items I have in my bank, I know it protects over the chaotic rapier.

Usefulness of the Greater Runic StaffEdit

The staff seems to be a little underwhelming for something that should be more useful. I could understand if the Greater Runic Staff's abilities/bonuses were for the Runic Staff, and the Greater Runic Staff had better abilities/bonuses... but usually the most expensive item (Greater Runic Staff is the most expensive item in Finix' shop) in a minigame shop, tends to have attributes that make it worth its elevated purchase price. At 25,000 Runespan points, the Greater Runic Staff is extremely expensive (by comparison the Wicked Cape is only 2,500 Runespan points, the Wicked Legs are 7,500 points, and the Wicked Robe Top is 15,000 points). The Massive pouch (I would have preferred a more expensive but repairable massive pouch) only costs 1,000 Runespan points, though the Massive pouch is un-repairable and will completely break down after 42 uses.

Comparing the stats of the Greater Runic Staff to other staffs:

Greater Runic Staff: +15 Magic Attack, +22 Magic Defence, +0 Strength bonus, +10 Magic Strength, 1 kg.

Staff of Light: +17 Magic Attack, +17 Magic Defence, +72 Strength bonus, +15 Magic Strength, 2.2 kg.

Polypore Staff: +20 Magic Attack, +20 Magic Defence, +3.2 Strength bonus, +13 Magic Strength, 1.8 kg.

Considering the very high requirements of the Greater Runic Staff (90 runecrafting, 75 Magic), combined with the very high Runespan points required to purchase it (compared to anything other item that can be bought in Finix' shop), you'd have expected that the Greater Runic Staff would have been something special in terms of its features.

[Editor's comment: although with the Runespan, the 90 runecrafting requirement isn't as demanding as it would have been in the pre-Runespan era.]

It seems like the Greater Runic Staff got the short straw in usefulness. The only categories in which the Greater Runic Staff beats the Staff of Light and Polypore Staff are in Magic Defence and its low weight. Two categories that wouldn't make many people excited. With those two not particularly special advantages, the only time where it would be useful to wield the Greater Runic Staff would be in Ourania (ZMI runecrafting). Oh, but wait, with the Runespan... there's not great benefit in gong to Ourania (ZMI runecrafting) any more.

There are a few perks with the Greater Runic Staff: (a) the Greater Runic Staff can be used to store runes, when you don't have inventory space, (b) use the Greater Runic Staff to store the runes for Repair Pouch when you're running in the Ourania Cave [...oh wait, the Runespan nullified one of the main benefits (good runecrafting training method) of the Ourania Cave...], the Greater Runic Staff has the highest Magic Defence and can occasionally absorb hostile magic spells that are cast on you.

For the most expensive (and should be most valuable) item in Finix' shop, the Greater Runic Staff seems... underpowered.

Are there any benefits in investing 25,000 Runespan points into buying the Greater Runic Staff?

Possible to have & use 2 charged Greater Runic Staffs?Edit

Is it possible to have 2 Greater Runic Staffs charged with different spells? and would they be usable at the same time? e.g farm run with remote farming in one staff, then fertile soil in another

Changes after Evolution of Combat?Edit

It seems that after the eoc the Greater Runic Staff no longer stores non-combat spells, could anyone verify?

Up until 5 minutes ago, my Greater runic staff was still set for Home Teleport. I cleared the spell, hoping to charge it with Slayer Dart; however I cannot seel to set its spell to ANY spell at this time... Has anyone been able to set the spell on their greater runic staff, and how? After clicking "Set spell" ingame, the chatbox says: "Please select the spell you wish to charge the staff with, by right-clicking the spell from the Ability book and selecting the 'Charge-staff' option.", but I have no such option anywhere in my Ability book. 83.101.44.209 18:19, April 6, 2013 (UTC)
I've had the same issue with Greater Runic Staff and the Slayer Dart. It takes the runes for the spell, but refuses to cast it because you need the Staff of Light or Slayer's Staff. I've tested with other spells like Air Surge, however, and this functions correctly. Admittedly it saves inventory space, but unless you're desperate, you may as well use a Staff of Light for the rune-saving ability, or a better staff like the armadyl or chaotic staff for more damage. 122.49.138.184 08:28, April 14, 2013 (UTC)
That is very unfortunate to hear, but good to know... Guess I'll postpone my Kurask tasks for the time being then (turning the mask into a helm), as the broad equipment and the slayer staff themselves are much to weak to efficiently kill Kurask (and I don't own a SoL)...
