[edit] Crafting level ranked on hiscores issue

On the page "crafting", it states that an level of 38 crafting is needed to get ranked into hiscores. That is either not true or not up to date because I had level 38 crafting but not ranked. But when I had gotten 40 crafting, I got ranked. Therefore, the new crafting level needed to be ranked on hiscores is 40, not 38.

[edit] Superheat Item?

Can you superheat (Level 43 Magic Spell) ore and mold it to make something or will it just transform into ore? Colee 16:37, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

First of all, you don't mold the ore into something, you mold the bar into something. And no, casting superheat on a metal bar has no effect: it will just 'splash'. File:Zaros_tally.PNG‎ Oli4burggraa TalkFile:Runecrafter_hat_y.PNG‎ 16:39, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] picture issue

This edit. Okay, but now it looks strange on 1024 x 768. Fie on different resolutions! Hyenastetalk 23:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Hang on, I'll try in 1024x768. If the image is too low it flows over the table so I moved the image up and added a br clear=all
Sort of looks ok in both now --Eucarya 23:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Blech. I just had a look through 800x600, and while the page looks fine, anything in that resolution looks bad. Hyenastetalk 23:09, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I can't help it, i like sitting 3 feet away from my computer so I need a large resolution hehee. --Eucarya 23:14, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] glass

there is another ingridient that can be used to get soda ash I have used it before can anyone remember what it is? Bob2006ty(RUNESTORM333)talk 14:47, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

swamp weed - it is dropped by molanisks, cave bugs (don't remember which level) and I've heard there is a spawn near dorgeshkaanNegaveck 19:18, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Training help

The training section could use a re-write, anyone up to it? The article is pretty good, but it's not very good as far as advice on how to level crafting the fastest, as well as efficiently (money-wise). All help would be nice. Herblore TIRRIANGANT (TALK) 19:34, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cows

These lines "One of the quickest ways to level up your crafting is to kill cows, tan their cowhides, and craft them for experience. However, this is only recommended if you have a fairly decent combat level (i.e. able to wield adamant or rune weapons), or the defence of the cows can be a stumbling block to your efforts. Scimitars and two-handed swords are the most effective weapons to use" sound wrong. Aren't cows easy to kill? Atlandy 03:38, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Dunno, maybe the editor meant that cowhides were only good experience if a player could kill them easily, i.e. being able to one-hit them. --Themurasame Hiscores 03:46, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Clay?

Would a new non-mem player craft clay when they are a low combat level as the only f2p pottery ovens are in the barbarian village(they would be attacked) and the crafting guild? should that be changed? Hp 4 eva 07:56, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually, they don't attack unless provoked (I just checked). 69.225.47.54 08:01, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Another note about clay; the guide doesn't reccomened using it unless wearing a bracelet of clay, saying that making soft clay takes far too long. In Varrock, you can have quite a quick turnaround from freshly mined clay to fired pottery in the Barbarian village. Should this be changed? The Alphy 00:59, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Enchanting orbs for battlestaves picture preference

I added 2 pics so far (air and fire) showing where to do this. I should have the the other 2 in a day or so. If someone likes the animated pics better, well, so di I, but I can't do them. And since the wiki is for info number 1, I am using the location pic over the animation pic. More useful it is. If anyone wants to replace with animation, please include the minimap in the pic, and then it will be good.--Degenret01 04:15, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GE prices in price tables

I added GE prices to the gemstone column in the gemstones and jewellery prices table as I thought it'd be useful if you're thinking about levelling (like me :) I balked at adding GE prices to the rest of the table as I realised it would become quite wide - people with a lo res screen would have to horizontal scroll. What do people think? Perhaps some more info for the economics of levelling with various gem/jewellery/enchanting combo's would be good. Also some economic info for crafting other stuff too.. I think it'd be good to have this info as well as advice on the pros and cons of different levelling routes in the Training help section. Drevicko 09:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tables

I think this article would be much more helpful if the experience and materials tables (especially the xp table) were put in other articles. They take up too much of the page atm, anyone who is actually looking for them would still be able to get the information. msk talk 02:48, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] F2P Silver crafting

I'm sort of curious about some of the assertions that have made in this article regarding silver crafting. I've been a long-time F2P crafter myself, and I find it hard to accept the statements you made here, where silver ore is sold for "nearly the same price" as unstrung symbols.

Frankly, I'm surprised that unstrung symbols even get sold on the Grand Exchange, and certainly trying to sell something like 2000 unstrung symbols is going to be something that will take you months if not years to accomplish. I'm not kidding here either. I guess some folks are buying them for junk trades, but such junk sales never make sense to me anyway. Selling unstrung symbols, one at a time at a general store, is going to only give you 80 coins in a painful and slow process... BTW, that is the same for low-alching them, which presumably is going to be the same if you use the 30 charges per day from your explorer's ring for "free" low-alchemy.

The difference here is is not insignificant, but 216 coins per symbol made is the cost to each player if they follow this method. For about 2k symbols, that is 432000 coins.... something I would call far from a modest investment for most players doing F2P.

I am also curious about how to obtain cheaply so much silver ore so quickly. Yes, soft clay is technically worth more, and I suppose you could sell the soft clay on the GE and invest it into silver ore purchases. Come to think about that, it is something I might want to try out :). Still, mining silver ore as a F2P player is something that is incredibly tough to do and the competition is so hard that I find it nearly impossible to get any sizable quantity of silver ore until I can enter the crafting guild.... at level 40. It is for this reason I suggested that F2P crafters don't bother with any silver crafting until they hit that level, as that is when they can finally obtain enough silver on their own regardless of current market conditions for the ore. Yeah, members can hit the Dorgeshuun Mine, but that is a members-only option and not something F2P can do.

I also would hardly say that you can craft unstrung symbols without end either, as crafting the 260,000 symbols to gain experience from level 16 through level 99 is hardly something I find easy or satisfying, or the nearly 50 million coins you need to invest into the silver ore that produces pure junk something that most F2P players are willing to spend.

The goal in writing the training guide for F2P was to come up with a training methodology that would allow players to realistically set some short, medium, and long term goals without getting bored for tears doing the training. Crafting more than about 2k items is what I thought was a reasonable limit for even a rather patient player. --Robert Horning 21:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

This guide is great! I never would have gotten my gold achievement ring, or gotten into the crafting guild without it! I never considered pottery crafting being any use, and couldn't afford to make jewelry or craft leather. But when I found this guide and saw that bowls earned 33 exp at low levels, it looked realistic for me to try.
I think a compromise is in order in making bowls after level 16, since "wasting" 175gp soft clay to make a 5gp bowl is the same as the cost of silver ore alone. Plus it looks to me that unstrung symbols sell consistently at 140gp and higher. I thought if they weren't selling, they would drop to the low alch price of 80gp. Although I haven't tried to sell any to verify if they will indeed sell on the GE. I'll leave it to you to change the pottery down from 40, as there may be some things I'm overlooking (only been crafting and using the GE for a week).
I've done it both ways--made soft clays after mining them, made 600 bowls, and 350 symbols from silver ores purchased at the GE. Making the symbols from ores is 3x faster exp per hour than making bowls, with the equivalent "boredom factor." Making the symbols from bars is about twice as fast as that. So the time spent is far longer to make bowls than symbols. And the price would be the same even if you sold all the bowls and none of symbols. It could have been a bit better balanced if making soft clay gave any exp, but it doesn't.
The phrase "on up" meant I haven't found the upper limit of payback versus other crafting. It doesn't imply you have to go from level 16 through level 99 with this one method. Leather crafting hard bodies is still around the same cost, and still a much slower process. So switching to that isn't beneficial until coifs can be made, which is about break-even. I changed the "on up" to "38+" for clarification. Coifs are the first leather material that comes close to the cost of the leather.
I appreciate you challenging my assumptions. I just got through leveling up crafting to on two characters starting from level 1 in mining, smithing and crafting. So I wanted to document what I learned before I forgot.
--Tom Supergan 23:35, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
A calculator comparing cost of raw materials to final product would be most helpful to include in the article. An example calculator that maybe can be used, but instead of ores/bars, show clay/soft clay as raw materials for bowls, and the low alch price (using achievement ring) since they may not sell on GE. The three items most helpful to compare up to crafting level 40 are the bowls, hardbodies, and unstrung symbols. But I can't figure out the calculator syntax. May need a new template.
--Tom Supergan 15:16, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
I'll try to help you out here on the calculator. Most of the calculators use nested templating that also grabs data from the GEMW tables to calculate the rates of experience, and the crafting calculators also appear to need a little bit of help as well. Editing templates can be very tricky, and is an advanced skill for wiki users so your reluctance is certainly valid here.
BTW, one of my huge complaints about Runescape as it applies to crafters is how NPCs are in direct competition with players in terms of a great many player craftable items. This is something that I think shouldn't even be in the game, such as with bowls. All pottery items should be worth considerably more than what they currently trade on the GE, but due to deliberate actions on the part of the game designers these items are flooding the game due to cheap sources of them from NPC stores. This also, BTW, applies to smithed items and even more so to monster drops of smithed items. --Robert Horning 16:13, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
