Comparison with regular prayers Edit
I think we should compare how fast the new prayers spend prayer points, so we can know the pros and cons and add them to the info about the new curses. - that'd be useful, but I can think of a downside of that straight away: The Ancient Curses need the prayer to be recharged by potions or the altar inside the temple of Senntisten, while recharging in any other altar would get the prayers back to normal(According to KBase, I didn't log in RS up to now so I can't do the quest and test for sure), and for the test about prayer drain, it doesn't need 2 players, it only needs one, with the same equips on both tests, after the quest I can do the tests with 50 and 0 pray bonus. 15:56, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently Azzanadra states that recharging at any other altar gives you the option to switch back to Prayers. However, switching to Ancient Curses has to be done at the Altar of Zaros.
- I agree with whoever`s above me. Prayer is able to be recharged at any alter, however you get a message of whether or not you want to swap back to regular Prayer. That makes it even more useful in many ways, since you don`t need a second trip to the digsite to change back. Penderwyll 18:43, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

- I misunderstood that too. The wording in the Ancient Hymnal seems to imply that praying anywhere else will make you lose the curses. If you read it carefully, however, it's really just warning you that if you decide to revert to normal prayers, you need to go back to the temple to get the curses again. From what i've gathered, the protect curses work the same way as regulars. 100% protect on NPCS. I've stood and let a npc hit me multiple times with no damage occurring but without they do damage me. 18.104.22.168 23:48, December 3, 2009 (UTC)
The Deflect curses do the same as the normal prayer counterparts plus reflecting some of it back. But since there's an added effect, it's possible that Jagex made the deflect curses drain prayer faster than the normal Protect prayers. I can confirm, after personal testing of all the drain rates, that the ones presented in the guides for both prayers and curses are correct. thus you will find that the drain rate is the same, and the bonus effect is a benefit given to players with a higher prayer level --Tortilliachp 03:35, December 29, 2009 (UTC)

Small Test for Drain Rate Edit
I had +0 prayer, have lvl 99 prayer, and let it drain to 0
Used a simple stopwatch, I clicked and pressed the button on the stopwatch at the same time.
The time for Deflect Melee was 4 min 59 seconds and 32 milliseconds.
The time for Protect from Melee was 5 min 02 seconds and 21 milliseconds.
Since these times are very close to each other, I'm guessing that it was just a small timing mistake on my part, or Protect from Melee drains slighter slower, but overall I'm guessing in most situations the extra damage with using Deflect Melee would be worth it.
That's an average 0.33 per second drain rate for the prayers, hope this helped.

I did the same thing, I have level 71 prayer and had +0 prayer bonus, and let it drain to 0, and both took exactly the same amount of time to end to me, while I don't remember exactly how long they took, they took the exact same amount of time, save the extra milliseconds that the deflect melee "lasted" because I clicked half a second before on the stopwatch than in the game.13:04, January 12, 2010 (UTC)
A curiosity Edit
With the Deflect Prayers, what would happen if two people praying Deflect Melee Abyssal whip each other? Would it just keep bouncing?

- I would suspect that since there is only a chance of deflection, that chance that it would bounce multiple times is very slim (eg. if 10% chance then only .1*.1=1% chance to deflect then have it deflect back). to Phoenix its only a partial reduction to other players (like protect from melee, only more damage reduction). The Deflect always happens, but only when the player who's praying WOULD hit over 10, as the damage that bounces back is accounted before the deflection(I.E. if you would hit 40 on a player using deflect melee, you would take 4 damage back, but the player using the deflect would take only 60% of the damage, namely, 24), and the deflection always works, as far as the players are able to hit over 10 damage on the other one, the damage that bounces back is only 10%, rounded down, though.13:07, January 12, 2010 (UTC)
Moving + animation Edit
From the article:
- Warning: Currently, when using Curses that have animations associated with them (such as Deflect and Sap Curses), the player is stopped from moving for as long as the animation is running. This makes using these prayers in places like the God Wars Dungeon extremely dangerous. In situations where it is necessary to keep moving, for instance, when fighting with the Commander Zilyana, death is inevitable.

- I just tested this with all curses up to Leech Attack (lvl 74) including the deflects and saps. Not only did I find this not to be true, none of the curses, except Berserker, even had animations attached to them. Reverting... Mordikai wartwunson 22:44, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

- Wrong, and wrong. You tested wrong. The deflect prayers make the player do a deflect animation (red slash over the shoulder for the Deflect Melee curse). When this animation starts running, the player is stopped from moving/running for as long as the animation is running. Did you test this WHILE ACTUALLY RUNNING? The best place to test this would be the trolls at trollheim, when protecting from missiles. Test right next time! DjIceman 03:31, December 13, 2009 (UTC)

No. as an avid slayer myself I can vouch that neither poison damage nor reflected damage (vengence also included here) detracts from slayer exp gained. --Tortilliachp 03:37, December 29, 2009 (UTC)
Exactly what tortilliachp said, and the prayer won't deflect damage if you can't hit the monster either because of slayer level(i.e. trying to deflect a dark beast's attack with 80 slayer), or if the monster needs a weapon to kill them(i.e. trying to deflect a turoth's attack in any way, even if you are using a leaf-bladed sword).13:12, January 12, 2010 (UTC)
Sap/leech decreases/increases Edit
Take this for example: if you turn sap mage and wait a little bit it will randomly drain your enemys and magic and defence, the first drain is always 10%. If you turn off the prayer, does the enemy stay drained of this 10%?
cause if so, this prayer is freaking sweet for mith dragons.

Berserker vs Burst of Strength?Edit
So I usually keep Burst of Strength (5% strength boost) activated for the greater part of each slayer task. Would Berserker be the Ancient Curse equivalent or perhaps superior to Burst of Strength in terms of extra damage over time? I ask b/c 15% longer boosted stats doesn't sound like it helps much in any case - especially considering most people (myself included) pot up again after 8-10 drained levels. If this is the case, that and the fact that the piety equivalent requires 95 prayer makes the curses damn near useless to me and many other players. HxC Ferret 05:22, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
- The equivalent to Burst of Strength would be Leech Strength at level 82 prayer. The requirement is steep, and the drain rate is way faster, but the difference is that Leech goes from 5% to 10% over time and also leeches away the opposition's strength level. Is it worth it? No. For me, the best part of the ancient curses are the protection prayers, since they deflect a bit of damage back (and Soul Split / Turmoil of course). For players with prayer levels even in the mid 70's, I'd say stick with prayers unless you have a specific task in mind. In relation to Berserker, a boosted stat move toward normal at a rate of 1 level per 100 game ticks. Assuming the +15% applies to ticks, you get 1 level per 115 ticks (each tick is 0.6 seconds) You get about 9 extra seconds according to my math per level boosted. In my mind, thats not worth it at all... but it would help in certain situations (such as pvp, where a fight only lasts a minute or two). Hope that kinda helps. - It is important to remember that the percentages of opponents levels can be very different from percentages to your levels. Even with a creature such as a waterfiend piety is better than turmoil, and the lower prayers follow the same distribution, so the same goes for them. It really depends on the creature. 9 extra seconds per boosted level. it would take 45 doses of potion to get and hour's worth of boosted stats. That's so minimal that it shouldn't even drain prayer. You have to wonder what Jagex was thinking when they made it. Would have been better as a permanent status for completing the quest or having Ancient Curses on. As for leech strength, that's way too fast a drain to be useful for slayer. Guess I won't see this book til 95 prayer (never), which is really a shame b/c I <3 Zaros =[
Berserker Vs Piety Edit
While im training at Armoured Zombies I am wondering if i should continue using super strength and super attack potions or use piety (Will not use pots and piety because i want them to last longer) so which would make the most xp per hour?
Wrath (250% or 300%)Edit
The chart on this page claims wrath hurts up to 250% of the prayer level, but the page dedicated to the Wrath prayers claims it is 300%. I do not have access to the prayer, can anyone confirm one or the other? Mpsmonkey 14:24, June 6, 2012 (UTC)
Anguish (Ranged) and Torment (Magic)Edit
There was a JMod post confirming that ranged and magic equivalents of turmoil are being released.

Some testing needs to be done with Anguish and Torment, to confirm that halos reduce their drain rate (wearing nothing but a halo).
Difference between Sap and Leech Edit
Hi, a while ago I got the ability to use curses, but there are somethings I don't quite understand.
1. The effective difference between Spa and Leech curses.
- Sap - Drains enemy Defence Rating, increasing over time.
- Leech - Steals Defence Rating from the opponent,, increasing over time.
The slight difference in the use of words ("enemy" vs "from the opponent") is nothing important I think. The difference between "Drains" and "Steals" is, I think. It seems to me to mean:
- Sap = Lowering enemy stats (Similar to normal Protection Prayers?)
- Leech = Lowering enemy stats + personal stat increase (Similar to Ancient Deflect Curses?)
- So basically: Leech = Sap + personal stat increase.
If this interpretation is correct, that would make that Leech > Sap (always).
2. The amount of Drain/Steal(+increase?).
- With normal Prayers it used to says how much it adds, e.g.: Thick skin=+5% ; Rock Skin=+10% ; etc. This is now (with the EoC) removed, so this counts for normal prayers too. So this boost is not shown (not in the description, not with stats, not at the combat tab (F5), nowhere I know).
It's also unknown (to me) till how much they increase over time. I certainly expect then to be bigger than regular prayers, but it would be nice to be able to quantify it somehow.
