Steel platebodies are the third-weakest standard platebody. It requires 5 defence level to equip. As with all platebodies, it provides negative bonuses to range and magic attacks. Moreover, it is vulnerable to magic spells.
The steel platebody is popular among medium level smiths as it can be alched for a satisfactory price. A player with 48 Smithing can make it by using five steel bars on an anvil while carrying a hammer, granting 187.5 smithing experience. It can be sold to the platemail shop in Varrock. A steel platebody also respawns in level 36 wilderness. It can also be a Mystery Gift after getting a Random event gift from completing a Random event. A steel platebody is needed to make a steel titan pouch, a Summoning familiar, which requires 99 Summoning.

- If you have an uneven amount of steel bars (less than 25) and try to make five steel platebodies, once you have made some and you still have less then 5 bars left before you have made all 5 plate bodies, you make the normal smithing animation but with the text, "You begin Smithing a steel platebody, but quickly discover that you do not have sufficient steel bars."
