[edit] Travel

Spirit trees are a gnomic method of transportation. Players gain access to the network when you complete the Tree Gnome Village quest. If you have finished The Grand Tree quest players can teleport from the Spirit Tree in there without completing Tree Gnome Village quest, however you will not be able to teleport back to there from other trees.

Clicking on a spirit tree brings up a dialogue:

  • The spirit tree does not feel like talking. (before quest)

[edit] Evil Tree

Evil Tree is a part of Distractions and Diversions, released on 25 February 2009. This event can be done twice a day and helps players train their Woodcutting, Firemaking, and Farming skills. Waves of trees appear every two hours; between waves, no trees will appear.

Players who have completed Tree Gnome Village can find out where a tree is by talking to a spirit tree for a hint. The spirit tree north-east of the Grand Exchange is the easiest to access because of its proximity to the Exchange. If there are no Evil Trees sprouting, the spirit trees will not provide any hints.

  • When an Evil Tree becomes full grown in a particular world (after 3-5 minutes of sprouting), the Spirit tree dialogue changes:
    • Do you wish to travel, or are you here to help dispatch the evil tree? Choices: Travel or Evil tree
    • If you pick Evil tree: Would you like me to teleport you directly there? Choices: Yes Please; What is this 'evil tree'?; or I've changed my mind, I want to stay here.

On 17 March 2009 the Spirit trees were given the ability to tell players approximately how long it would be until the next Evil Tree.

    • There won't be another evil tree for over half an hour
    • There will be another evil tree in just under half an hour.

    • Another strange sapling is about to sprout. (lasts about 4 minutes)

Players can grow their own spirit tree from a spirit tree seed once reach level 83 in the Farming skill. Spirit tree patches can be found in:

Spirit trees are grown just as any other farming tree, with the exception that each player may have only one spirit tree planted in just one of the three patches at any one time. To move a Spirit Tree's location or simply to plant a newly acquired seed requires that the existing tree be removed first.

The growing time for a Spirit Tree is about 61 hours and 20 minutes, or 2.5 days. However, growing a Spirit Tree yields 19,500 farming experience which is divided between planting xp (1%) and check health xp (99%).

Spirit trees cannot be cut down so one simply uses a spade on the tree to remove it. Spirit Trees do not yield roots when removed.

Since Spirit Tree seeds are not a tradeable item players rarely encounter them. They are obtained (very rarely) as rewards, whether from bird nests, as an Evil Tree reward, or as production from managing their kingdom after completing the Royal Trouble quest. A more reliable source is Mrs. Winkin who will sell players a Spirit Tree seed for 55,000 vinesweeper points.

Spirit trees may be tended by gnome gardeners for 5 Monkey nuts, 1 Monkey bar, and 1 Ground tooth. Given the rarity of the seed and the length of time it takes to mature, having a gardener tend the growing plant is strongly recommended. Players are now animated when planting spirit trees as of 9 November 2009.

There is no possible way of being able to grow this tree using the assist system. However, a player is able to plant it using farming boosts, as early as level 77 with a spicy stew. It is recommended that the player also brings a compost mound to raise their farming again if the spicy stew lowers it.

Once matured, a farmed Spirit Tree will appear as an option for travel via the Gnome Spirit Tree network (see above).
