This is an article about short swords. For long swords, see the Longsword article
Swords, sometimes called Shortswords, are fast stabbing weapons and are stronger than daggers. While a sword is best at stabbing, players can also use it as a slashing weapon. It is generally a good weapon with all-round stats and isn't too expensive. Like most melee weapons, swords cannot be poisoned.
Swords aren't often used by players, as most prefer the stronger but slower longsword, or weak but poison-able daggers. Moreover, F2P players prefer scimitars much more, as few strong monsters are strong against slash attack and the stats of scimitars are superior to the sword's.
While the Learning the Ropes quest was available, players received a training sword (which has identical statistics to the Bronze sword), from the quest. However, with the re-introduction of the Tutorial Island, Vannaka once again supplied all new players with the bronze sword, which is kept when the player uses the Lumbridge Home Teleport spell to reach Lumbridge. Now, with the Unstable Foundations quest, players receive and use a bronze platebody, bronze sq shield and bronze sword to kill a goblin, but are unable to keep them and are required to "return" the items to Sir Vant.
