The Saradomin sword gives the same strength and slash bonus as an Abyssal whip, but offers an additional crush and prayer bonus and the ability to train strength. The sword also attacks at the same speed as the whip. However, since the whip is a one-handed weapon and can be wielded with a shield or a defender, and due to the far cheaper price of the whip some players consider the whip to be the better option.
The sword is also commonly used for slaying waterfiends due to its crush bonus and balance between strength and speed. This balance makes the Saradomin Sword more useful for killing waterfiends than godswords; its faster speed is often more efficient at dealing damage, despite its lower strength bonus. The godswords' higher damage potential is often wasted when attacking waterfiends when they have only small amounts of health remaining. It is a popular lending item that many people try to borrow.

On July 15th, 2009 Jagex introduced an update to PVP Worlds and Bounty Hunter Worlds in which player were automatically skulled on entering the world and the Protect Item prayer was disabled on these worlds. The Saradomin Sword, a popular item used by one itemers started to see a rapid drop in price along with other itemer weapons such as Dragon Claws and the Armadyl Godsword. The Saradomin Sword suffered around a 500,000 gold loss the day after the update though some players in World 2 were seen selling them for as low as 5 million gold plus junk. However since the introduction of bounty worlds+1 the price has sky rocketed with people trying to buy them for as much as twelve or fourteen million gold. Following a week or so after the bounty worlds+1 update, the price of the Saradomin Sword began to stabilize. The day of the beginning of the Anti-76k Update, the Saradomin Sword began to crash, along with other weapons such as the Abyssal Whip, losing almost 500k in value the day of the update
[edit] Trivia
- The Saradomin sword has Saradomin's symbol as a hilt, similar to the Saradomin Godsword.
- The blade of the sword itself seems to resemble a gigantic metallic feather suggesting it once belonged to the god Armadyl.
- On the 28th July 2009 the Saradomin Sword had a graphical and animation update, the graphical update doesn't seem to be very notable. The update was so the hilt would not go through the character's body.
- In the Brazilian worlds, both the Saradomin Sword and the Saradomin Godsword used to share the same name. This has since been fixed.
- During the quest While Guthix Sleeps, the Elite Black Knights you are supposed to kill for part of the quest appear to be wielding a Saradomin Sword, even though they are followers of Zamorak.
- The Saradomin sword is the fastest two-handed sword in the game.
