A Sabre-toothed kyatt is a large species of feline animal that can be trapped using the Hunter skill at level 55. They have a combat level of 60, but cannot be attacked. They will however become aggressive once teased by a player, and retaliate with melee attacks. They can easily hit the player for over 300 life points fairly quickly, so bringing high-healing food is advised when hunting them for longer periods.

They are caught by using a teasing stick to provoke them and then by luring them over pitfall traps. The pitfall traps are made using a set of logs and a knife on the numerous pitfalls in the surrounding area. There are multiple dead trees in the area which can be cut to obtain the logs. Collected Sabre-toothed kyatt fur can be used to make kyatt hunter gear and Spirit Kyatt Summoning Pouches.

After completing the Fur 'n' Seek quest, sabre-toothed kyatts have a chance to drop Sabre-like teeth, an essential bone in the Odd Old Man's second Wish List.

Trapping a sabre-toothed kyatt is also a part of the medium Fremennik tasks.

HabitatEdit

The Sabre-toothed kyatt can only be found in the southern part of the Rellekka Hunter area. They are surrounded by cerulean twitch birds and sabre-toothed kebbits, as well as snowy knight and sapphire glacialis butterflies. This area can be easily reached with the fairy ring coordinates DKS and then running northeast, or by running farther north from Rellekka after using the lodestone network.

Money-making strategyEdit

Items Needed: Hatchet, Knife, Teasing stick, Tireless run scrolls (50-100), 34 Willow logs (8 in spirit terrorbird), Dramen staff or lunar staff (unless Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift is completed)

Wear weight reducing equipment, hatchet and armour such as rune platebody or Varrock armour 3, kyatt hat, kyatt top and kyatt legs.

Using Fairy code DKS, or the Fremennik Province Lodestone, to take you to the snowy hunter area, running north to the pit-fall traps that are not covered in snow and start to set-up all 3 pit-fall traps.

Tease the close-by Kyatts and quickly as you can Lure it to the pit-fall and jump over it, if successful check the trap and reset the trap.

Repeat the step above until all your willow logs have been used up. When your run energy gets low use the spirit terrorbird special;

When you have used up all your willow logs you may chop down trees for more logs (wearing Seer's Headband will yield 2 logs when cutting regular trees) or use the fairy ring and bank, getting more logs, restoring life points and scrolls.

These methods may yield between 600k-1100k coins per hour depending on prices, similar coins/hr to cannoning Green dragons.

Another method is to use an Arctic bear (71 summoning) in conjunction with the ring of kinship/ring of duelling/amulet of glory. The Arctic bear will teleport you to the snowy hunter area where the kyatts are located.

A very effective way to bank for higher levelled players is using the TokKul-Zo ring teleport to outside the TzHaar Fight Cave, directly next to a bank, and only a short run away from a fairy ring.

A Familiar is not required to hunt kyatts, however they do aid a great deal. you may also want to think about carrying some food, wearing a Regen bracelet or bringing Enhanced excalibur if your Constitution and/or Defence is of a lower level.

Glitches/bugsEdit

More often than not, a kyatt will suddenly lose interest in the player it is chasing, giving a player the message; "Someone else is being chased by that." even if no one else is around or teasing it. This happens fairly often and isn't exclusive to just the sabre-toothed kyatt, as both the spined larupia and horned graahk have the same reoccurring issue.

On rare occasions after you have captured a kyatt, it respawns with the spikes from the pitfall trap underneath it, showing even while it walks around. They eventually diminish after several minutes. This problem also occurs with the horned graahk and has yet to be fixed.

Another continuation of this glitch occurs when you trap a kyatt and jump over the pit at the same time. The kyatt will be resurrected from the pit and continue. The newly revived kyatt will have spikes from the bottom of the pit around it and at the same time spikes will remain in the pit preventing you from building over it for several minutes. this glitch has not yet been fixed but can be resolved by using some logs on the pit trap.

On occasion a graphical bug occurs when you clear the corpse of a kyatt from a pit; the shadow of the dead kyatt remains even though there is nothing left in the pit.

There is also currently a graphical bug where a kyatt will jump over a pit and suddenly duplicate the current animation with a slightly more blue-colored kyatt overlapping it.

It was once possible to lure a kyatt into a trap while a corpse was already still in the pit. This was achieved by luring a kyatt over a pitfall, jumping over the same pit again, and then teasing another kyatt, and finally jumping over the pit once more. The second kyatt would fall into the pit with the first. It was abused to check the trap for double the drops. This has since been fixed, as now you can only get one set of fur and big bones.

TriviaEdit

  • The Sabre-toothed kyatt bears a strong resemblance to the real-world sabre-toothed cat (smilodon fatalis) that lived in North America hunting the mammoth, bison, horse, and presumably other herbivorous mammals during the Pleistocene period.
