The Runecrafter hat can be bought at the Runecrafting Guild for 1,000 Runecrafting guild tokens. The same hat is obtained during The Great Orb Project minigame to identify the other players in the minigame, with team members wearing the same coloured hat as them and their "enemies" wearing the opposite colour. Both types of hats can not be used interchangeably, since the minigame requires that the hat given to the players by Wizard Acantha or Wizard Vief be worn during play.

The Runecrafter hat can be bought in three colours: green, blue and yellow. It also has "Goggles" which can be put down and taken up by right-clicking the hat when the hat is in one's inventory. The minigame version only has two colours, green and yellow, and does not have the "Goggles" right-click option, as the goggles are worn on the face. This is explained by the hat's "examine" option, which says that the goggles are for extra safety while runecrafting. A player will stand up if they switch the position of the goggles while resting

The hat has the same magic attack bonus as the Combat hood, making it the best Magic Attack bonus available for free players because it does not degrade during combat. It also has higher defence compared to the Combat hood against all styles of attack, except Summoning and Magic.
