This article is about the Longsword. For the Shortsword, see Rune sword.
The Rune longsword is a longsword stronger than the Adamant weapons, and is also stronger than the Rune scimitar. Like all Rune weapons, it requires 40 attack to wield. It is also the second strongest longsword available to free players after the Corrupt dragon longsword. The Rune longsword can do more damage and is more accurate than the Rune scimitar since it has a higher strength and slash bonus. It also possesses the highest defensive bonuses of any free-to-play rune weapon. In pay-to-play it is exceeded by Rune claws. Players can make a Rune longsword with the Smithing skill at level 91 using two Rune bars, giving the player 150 Smithing experience. When you cast the spell High Alchemy on this item you will get 19,200 coins. Before the Rune scimitar made a popularity breakthrough, the Rune longsword was the most popular weapon used by free-to-play players. Players may purchase a Rune longsword at the Grand Exchange in Varrock. It can also be bought from Scavvo in the Champions' Guild or the weapon shop in Keldagrim or obtained as a reward from Level 3 Treasure trails.
The Rune longsword is considered by many to be the second-best non-members weapon, surpassed only by the Rune scimitar due to its slightly faster attack speed, but there are also people who say that Rune longsword or Rune sword, which also has better attack speed than scimitar, hold that title. And some claim that it depends upon what attack and strenght levels you have. Those who support that theory often believe that the higher attack you have compared to your strenght, the more reason you have to use rune longsword, and vice-versa. A thing that has been proven is that this is dependant on what you fight, but very many argue that the difference is too small to be a matter.

[edit] Trivia
- On 28 July 2009, the Animation Pack 1 update changed the appearance and attack animations of the Rune longsword to what it currently is today, along with the Godswords, Rune and Dragon Scimitars, the Dragon Longsword and the Abyssal Whip. The old inventory icon of the Rune longsword was
- On 23 July 2009, five days before the scheduled update, the Rune longsword image in the Grand Exchange Database was replaced by the new model. Players found the image and posted about it in the RuneScape Forums, making it widely known before Jagex removed the image a few hours later. Five days later the image was once again put up along with the official release.
