In light of the semi-recent announcement regarding the RuneScape Machinima1 Competition on 11 August 2009, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about RuneScape Video Makers. Players like Tehnoobshow and Excl gain instant popularity and have become famous as a result of their (funny) videos. However, is this a boon or a bane? Let’s discuss the pros and cons of being a famous RuneScape Video Maker.

Pros[]

First of all, seeing as you are famous, you're known by thousands of RuneScape players. You're well-liked and have plenty of friends, I suppose. Also, being famous, one could be very influential if they wanted to. Who doesn't want to be popular? Also, you never get lonely, seeing as there are always people in your clan chat who don't mind chatting with you. There's a chance that Jagex might ask you to create a video to advertise a competition, and they may give you some rewards to thank you Lol. You’re having fun doing something that you and other people like, which can be quite rewarding, I suppose. On top of that, you might just end up earning money for creating videos (see this example).

This can be summed up into:

  • Popularity
  • Strangers in clan chat
  • Rewarding/enjoyable experience
  • Money-making tool

Cons[]

I'm guessing that the most annoying part about being famous is getting private-messaged to the point where it becomes difficult to communicate with your friends. I doubt it’s Zezima-bad (where you get 10+ messages in a second) though, since less people know about RuneScape Video Makers than No. 1 players. Your clan chat becomes quite useless if you ever need to use it for LootShare/CoinShare. And having many friends, could mean a full friends list, which could be a hindrance in certain situations Frown.

This can be summed up into:

  • Private chat flooding
  • Strangers in clan chat
  • Full friends list

Conclusion[]

So there you have it. Based on the number of points (4-3), being a RuneScape Video Maker is a good thing. But then again, quantity (number of points) isn't everything, and it mainly depends on what type of person you are (if you don't do combat much, you could cancel out the second point under cons). Regardless, my opinion is that if you're having fun doing something that you enjoy, then it's probably a good thing Smile

Definitions[]

  • Machinima - A form of filmmaking that uses computer game technology to shoot films in the virtual reality using a game engine.
