Calling all JS monkeys! Edit

The taskbar, you know, that brown floating bar at the bottom of your screen, has expanding menus on it naturally. I'm wondering if it is possible to replicate those, and if it is, can I have the code? Thanks. Matt (t) 06:49, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not a JS guy, but I suggest you don't do that. Ryan told me a quite a few months ago that dropdown bars/expanding menus using JS will increase page loading times by a significant margin, don't take my word for this, probably best to check with a coder. 222 talk 06:52, May 5, 2011 (UTC)
Brown floating bar? If you're talking about the one inside RS, which isn't JS, tempering with that is against RS rules. I'm not sure what other brown bars there are. Promissory noteTHARKON 18:52, May 5, 2011 (UTC)
That bar. Matt (t) 04:52, May 7, 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see, I started using monobook after they removed that other skin, because I consider the new Wikia-skin to be wasting width. It's probably something with onHover events. Promissory noteTHARKON 19:40, May 7, 2011 (UTC)

Add the following to the list of toolbar links you already have:

	$('<style type="text/css">.showdropdown {display:none;} .dropdownhover:hover .showdropdown {display:block !important;}</style>').appendTo('head');
	$('<li class="dropdownhover"><div style="position:absolute;height:25px;width:50px;right:auto;bottom:0px;"></div>Menu 2<ul id="toolbardropdown2" class="showdropdown tools-menu" style="right:auto;bottom:22px;"><li class="overflow"><a href="/wiki/firstlinkpage">firstlinktext</a></li><li class="overflow"><a href="/wiki/secondlinkpage">secondlinktext</a></li><li class="overflow"><a href="/wiki/thirdlinkpage">thirdlinktext</a></li></ul></li>').appendTo('');

and in <li class="overflow"><a href="/wiki/secondlinkpage">secondlinktext</a></li>, replace the secondlinkpage and secondlinktext with the actual url and text. Add more of them to get more links. I hope it helps. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 18:22, May 20, 2011 (UTC)
Also in that code, the <div style="position:absolute;height:25px;width:50px;right:auto;bottom:0px;"></div> has width:50px; in it, which needs to be changed depending on the text you are going to have as "dropdown button", so that it changes along with that. If you don't know enough about it, just don't close it. Simple. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:18, June 4, 2011 (UTC)
I beg your pardon. Part of my role as an administrator is to find consensus in discussions and close them appropriately; never did it say I must also be an expert at the topic at hand. Also, it was well within my means to merge the two articles together if I so wished, but I chose the ask for an "expert" on this topic to ensure that the information being merged was helpful and fully accurate. Curt comments like you posted do not help at all with this request, nor do they reflect entirely well upon yourself. 222 talk 11:34, June 4, 2011 (UTC)
Or you could just wait for someone who does know enough about it to show up before closing. Last time this kind of thing happened, at the Skeleton's RfS, it was forgotten about quite soon. To prevent this from happening, the closing admin should just merge/split the articles himself, or wait for another admin to close it (unless they have already found someone to do it). Implementing the proposal or making sure the proposal is implemented is part of closing threads. That also applies to RfM/RfS. (unless of course the proposal is a wiki-wide change, in which case everyone should do it, but you get what I mean) JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 16:39, June 4, 2011 (UTC)
Firstly, a large amount of the Skeleton page problem was my fault and not the closing admin's (due to me splitting and not being able to finish, and then not presenting the problem of unfinished work through a medium such as this here page). It is not and should not be an admin's job to implement a proposal. Their job is simply to make a decision, and to archive the discussion page. There is absolutely no reason why someone with admin tools should have to split a page, unless you believe in some sort of hierarchical supremacy. It has always seemed to me that large number of proposals in the non-yew grove discussions have been left for too long because those making the consensus decision don't yet want the hassle of implementing it. In these cases, had the decision just been made, it could have been implemented by someone else sooner, which would be likely be more efficient. In fact I myself have split pages that had quite obvious consensus to so with a long time left without discussion, simply because the way you think things should work was taking far too long. It would not be unreasonable to come to a decision on a discussion and then leave that discussion open until implemented. Instead, people feel the need to immediately archive something after the decision is made.
Regarding this particular case - Mr Brains was well placed to make a decision on what should be implemented, but did not feel completely comfortable with the information involved. This is not unreasonable. It is entirely possible that other admins feel the same way. Whilst it would certainly be better if the person making the decision also implements it, it is still better that the decision is made rather than just being left. This opens up other users, such as those proposing the merge, to implement it, rather than just leaving it for admins. I can say, personally, that I would happily have implemented a number of these split/merge things had this been done. Additionally, the idea that this will be forgotten about when it is placed on a page such as User help seems completely redundent.

High alchemy prices Edit

thnx C0ws  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by C0ws (talk) on 16:20, 28 May 2011 (UTC).

Lol at marking your own comment as unsigned (you can sign by using ~~~~). Anyway, I don't think there is such a thing since every item requires filling in the alchemy values on their own page atm. It may be an idea for a project but I think it would be a lot more work to make than the use you'd get out of it, since alchemy values don't change and aside from those calculators and the item's own page I don't think they are used anywhere. Promissory noteTHARKON 16:21, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
222 marked it as unsigned. Anyway, for high alch you would use {{:Exchange:Mithril dagger|View=HighAlch}} and for low alch it's {{:Exchange:Mithril dagger|View=LowAlch}}. --Saftzie (talk) 17:58, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
Why aren't we using those in infoboxes then? Promissory noteTHARKON 18:28, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
Looking at the code in Template:Infobox Item I think it could be used in those boxes with a few simple changes, this would ensure that the GEMW includes alchemy prices, cause they will be fed from the infoboxes. However, any edit to the template requires consensus first on its talk page so I will raise the question there as well. Promissory noteTHARKON 18:41, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
If anything, it should be the other way around, to use the Exchange info in the infoboxes. There's already enough vandalism and cluelessness in the Main space articles. It's better not to have it propagate to the Exchange space. --Saftzie (talk) 18:50, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
Also, your proposal would be better in the Yew Grove than on a talk page. --Saftzie (talk) 18:51, May 29, 2011 (UTC)
I did mean the Exchange values would be included on the infoboxes, but the boxes have a link to the Exchange pages. Example, more people check Mithril dagger than Exchange:Mithril dagger. And I might start a Yew Grove page on it as well if the talk page remains silent, last time I started a YG thread though they said I should try the associated talk page first so I went with that. Avoiding wanted pages Edit

Anyone know how to avoid a page from appearing on wanted pages when it does not exist using code similar to this:
If I were to remove Signatures/Tharkon then it would appear on the wanted pages, as can be seen here. Promissory noteTHARKON 17:17, June 1, 2011 (UTC)

Nope, ifexist will treat it like a wanted page/red link IIRC. Makes sense, you want that page if it exists. Full slayer helmet Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon platebody 17:20, June 1, 2011 (UTC)
To solve this, use {{subst:#ifexist:Template:Signatures/DeadDemon}} instead. It checks if the page exists only at the time of saving the page, preventing it to appear in the wanted pages (as the code after saving would not include #ifexist then). This is only for specific situations, so not for templates that need to check for this. Templates should either use {{{{{|safesubst:}}}#ifexist:...}} or just normal {{#ifexist:}}. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 19:22, June 1, 2011 (UTC)
I think Tharkon was interested more specifically what to do with users who sign their posts with signatures that never existed. If they don't have a signature page (because maybe they're clueless), they're even less likely to manually type in the subst expression. Unless there's a way to administratively edit their preferences to include the subst expression as their signature, I think the only thing to do is follow around after them and replace all their dead signatures with a simple user page reference like the default signature. --Saftzie (talk) 01:14, June 2, 2011 (UTC)
...or tell them to change their prefs to include subst: in it JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:25, June 2, 2011 (UTC)

I got sort of a portfolio page with signatures I made, and to keep track of if the user ended up using that signature. I thought {{#ifexist:}} would be enough to avoid wanted pages until I noticed one appearing on there a few days ago. {{#subst:}} wouldn't work in this case either. The problem is caused by signatures that were requested but never put in use. Promissory noteTHARKON 20:05, June 2, 2011 (UTC)

A way to fix 'wikitable sortable' for what seems to be problem with negatives? Edit

When sorting a table the has decimal values, for examples, these values I made up:

{-0.5, -0.8, -1.2, -1.3, -1.4, -2.1, -2.2} (which, if you've noticed, is already in the correct order)

Upon trying to sort this column, it will sort it like so:

{-0.8, -0.5, -1.4, -1.3, -1.2, -2.2, -2.1}

If this is a value like GP/XP, it translates to: base value - cheaper - pricier - cheaper - cheaper - pricier - cheaper || Which doesn't seem to be a logical way to sort a collumn like Gp/xp

Many examples of this can be found under a lot of the articles linked from Calculators

Is there a way the table can corretly sort these? Seems to only happen with negatives Godel 22:25, June 16, 2011 (UTC)

The calculator articles suffer from people wanting to use coin graphics (or comments) in the cell with the number, which confuses the sort. Creating a table that has only the numbers you list works for me. --Saftzie (talk) 23:29, June 16, 2011 (UTC)
Positive values are still sorted right even with the coins image. But even without the decimal values, negative values are sorted in reverse order as if positive but always lower than all positive values. So -2, -5, -8, 0, 2, 5, 8. It seems the problem only occurs with negative values with coins images and only in the decimal part. They are sorted but according to some strange logic. The coins image would have been a good explanation if this caused the value to not be sorted at all, or to be sorted in the order of presentation. The decimal part is sorted correctly, while the non-decimal part is sorted in reverse as can be seen below.

Yeah, there we go. As you can see when the table is sorted, it's not sorted in the correct order in either direction. Mathmatically, the problem is that it's wanting to treat the negatives like positives even though they're not. Is the wikitable sortable something we have access to the sourcecode of to change, or more internal than that? And who can fix it if so? Godel 12:24, June 18, 2011 (UTC)
I've added a few columns to illustrate my previous point. More explicitly stated, any time you add anything, as in anything at all, to a cell with a number in it, it is no longer treated as a number. The entire cell contents are treated as a string and sorted lexically rather than numerically. Try it with your favorite spreadsheet program. You'll get identical behavior. --Saftzie (talk) 16:58, June 18, 2011 (UTC)
I see, and lexically, - comes before any number. It does not explain why -0.8 comes before -0.5 though. Since even lexically those should be the other way around. Of course I tried it in a spreadsheet. And guess it differs, cause my spreadsheet program sorts - after numbers, but before letters. It also sorts 8 after 5 as any should. So sorting lexically would only cause negative numbers to be sorted in reverse, as if they were positive, yet still separately from actual positive numbers, and depending on the program either before or after positive numbers. This is not what the table shows when using negative non-integers. Promissory noteTHARKON 07:14, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
Using {{Coins}} before the number is included in the string. Compare the column that uses {{Coins}} and show a graphic with the one I created that just uses the hidden text and the number (Prepending sort key from Coins). You're assuming that {{Coins}} always prepends the same string. It doesn't. --Saftzie (talk) 08:26, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
Aside of the -2.2 and -2.1 values all the images are identical as far as I can see. But if this is just how the sorting works, I vote for removing the images from calculators that benefit from correctly sorted values, or moving the image to the right, which would require an adjusted version of {{Coins}} either trough a separate page or by feeding it a parameter. Compare:

{|class="wikitable" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 125px;" |{{t|User:Tharkon/Research|20}}||{{User:Tharkon/Research|20}} |- |{{t|User:Tharkon/Research|20|right}}||{{User:Tharkon/Research|20|right}} |}

Promissory noteTHARKON 14:42, June 21, 2011 (UTC)
Get over how the images look. The column labeled "Prepending sort key from Coins" doesn't have any images, but it has the same sort order as the column that does. --Saftzie (talk) 18:32, June 21, 2011 (UTC)
To be honest, I don't really have any clue what {{Ntsh}} does. Promissory noteTHARKON 11:49, June 22, 2011 (UTC)

How does the rarity of item drops work? Edit

Is there a total drop log that i can add to? Example: Vyrewatch corpse drop rarity. I have been buring for awhile, and wish to start a drop log. Can i add that to the wiki somehow? Any help would be nice. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by God vivec1 (talk) on 06:54, 26 June 2011 (UTC).

We put drop logs on monster articles for items that that monster, as long with the rarity of that item being dropped by that monster, and the quantity of that item that that monster drops. We do have no "total drop logs" as such, but that doesn't sound like such a bad idea. There is a entry for the Vyre Corpse on the Vyrewatch article though. If you have any more questions you can put them here or on my talk page. Big smile Matt (t) 06:59, June 26, 2011 (UTC)
What I think God vivec1 meant is if the rarity on monster drops is calculated somehow, which it isn't, as shown in this example line from the Vyre corpse article: {{DropsLine|Name=Gold charm|Quantity=1|Rarity=Common|gemw=no|Image=Gold charm.png}}. As for starting a drop log, you can start one on a subpage of your userpage, like User:God vivec1/Vyre drops or User:God vivec1/Drop logs/Vyrewatch if you intend to make a lot of them, with an index on User:God vivec1/Drop logs. The Compatability Between Monobook and My User Pages... Edit

Andorin pointed out that my pages look absolutely ghastly on Monobook, and that they also take up too much space... Here's a link of how my talk page appears on it. He suggested that I find a way to make it so it'll fit within the margins, and the problem I need solving is how to make it fit within the margins of Monobook and still make it appear the way it is on Oasis. Any help? S T Y G 06:14, July 3, 2011 (UTC)

Fixed the sidebar, however you'll have to change the position of that banner. Sorry I didn't look at it sooner. Cheers, Ryan PM 19:08, July 12, 2011 (UTC)

Filename Bot Edit

I was under the impression that this thread passed on the notion that there was already a bot in-the-making. Unfortunately the person developing the bot has decided they don't want to any more. Therefore, we need someone else to develop this bot to follow through with the thread and get these file names fixed. Any takers? (: Urbancowgurl777 (talk) 20:53, July 17, 2011 (UTC)

Save your RS avatar image on your computer, then go to Special:Preferences and scroll down to the Avatar section, then upload the image from there. You can have personal images on your userspace as long as you upload them on an offsite image hosting website, such as Imageshack or Photobucket, per RS:NOT#HOST. More information can be found there. Bots Edit

I'm thinking about getting a bot (doing the application thingy), but I don't know if I know enough about bots in general to put it through. I'd like some help to find out...

  • How to program them
  • How to make a bot work in IRC (I.e., Evilbot)
  • Where else I can find general information on bots

All help would be appreciated :D Adam SavageSpeech cursor 23:17, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

It depends on what you want it to do. An easy IRC bot to work with is lizardbot. For wikibots, look it up on Meta. 22px-Logo.svg.pngTyA_userpage_image.png 03:25, August 24, 2011 (UTC)

Charm logsEdit

I've been adding to the charm logs, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. When I click "add to log" I fill in all the information such as kills and amounts of charm. In the log I then see one row with what appears to be a total, and one row with my entry.

Does the total automatically get updated so that it reflects on the monster page, or should I be doing something? Will my added row always stay in the log, because for both monsters I added, Ice Warrior and Scorpion, my rows seemed the only entries and yet there is a much bigger total than just my entry obviously. Can somebody tell me how these logs work and if I'm doing the right thing?

TalysShade 12:01, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Charm logs work like this:
  1. An editor (e.g. you) adds their kills to the submissions page.
  2. Other editors may check to ensure it is not vandalism.
  3. Regularily, a wiki-bot runs through all the submission pages, and moves all the legitimate entries to the actual charm log. The entries on the submissions page are then removed.

Hope this helps, 222 talk 12:47, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Not sure what you are referring to as I don't see anything in the bottom left in either skin. But I suggest just checking the sourcecode of the page. (Ctrl+U in Firefox, Or View Source in the View menu in Internet Explorer) Promissory noteTHARKON 19:55, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

I've added it to MediaWiki:Common.css Suppa chuppa Talk 17:00, October 27, 2011 (UTC)
This was rolled out to all gaming wikis. Thus, I wonder what Wikia will be thinking once they see their link to Amazon's site (the links that say pre-order, it's like more money for them) that is potentially lost with this addition to the CSS. Not that I don't mind it being gone, just saying that it might be back if Wikia has anything to say about it. Personally, I'd like to add the BTS things to it, but doesn't seem possible at this moment. Ryan PM 06:39, October 28, 2011 (UTC)

Script Edit

I just made User:Joeytje50/monstercalc.js, but after trying it in the Wikia skin, it seems like that skin just doesn't load the entire script. The problem is not that IE doesn't support it, because loading the script afterwards (pressing F12 then clicking on the "console" tab and entering importScript('User:Joeytje50/monstercalc.js')) does work normally. Could someone please check if the script does work for you when putting importScript('User:Joeytje50/monstercalc.js') in your wikia.js and then going to a monster page, for example Chicken. If it doesn't work (there should appear a small input box before the " 12 xp (and 4 Constitution experience)" in the "Experience for killing" table row), please try activating the script using the F12 method, and tell me if that does work. Thanks for testing Big smile but no, I don't need a pic, I also know it works (does work in monobook + IE for me), the problem is just that it doesn't load in IE in Wikia skin. I checked it at school too, and it doesn't load there either. I tested it on my own wiki though, and it does load in IE + Wikia skin when placed in MediaWiki:Common.js, so apparently there is no problem. (so the problem was that IE does load the script, just doesn't activate it when placed in /wikia.js) Thanks for testing it though. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:10, October 26, 2011 (UTC)
I put in the script in the wikia.js page and then tried it in in Firefox and IE with both the Wikia and Monobook skins, and only when using the Wikia skin in Firefox and hitting Ctrl+F5 do I see a checkbox and an inputbox with a 1 in it next to Experience for Killing and just the inputbox with Slayer XP.
