[edit] For New Members

Hello new members! Before you make any edits to the images on the RuneScape Wiki, Please read the Image and media policy. To start helping with this project there are a few things you should know.

First: This project mainly does edits to articles within Category:Standard detail images, Category:JPEG images, Category:Animated GIF artefact images, and Category:Images needing transparency. We are attempting give all of the images a professional, uniform look that compliments the text information on the Wiki.

Secondly: Although our mission is to update images and keep the RuneScape wiki's media up to date, this does not give you the right to replace a perfectly good image with one featuring your own character. Images should only be replaced if absolutely necessary, not just because you believe that it would look better with your character in the picture.

Images and media policy Please be familiar with and attempt to adhere to the Images and media policy when editing existing images or uploading new images.

Regarding Concise Clarity: Always where possible keep the image clearly focused on the topic matter. As a hypothetical example, imagine an image of a player 'riot' in the wilderness and somewhere in the midst of the crowd of players there is one person performing a weapon special on another person, this sort of image would not be a good image to present that weapons special due to lack of focus on the topic (to be concise). As an example of clarity, some of the weapons specials would be better demonstrated on monsters with enough hitpoints or size to show both hits of the weapons special, this would include the dragon dagger special effect which as of this writing only shows one of the two potential weapon strikes thus the image does not clearly represent the special's full effect. A second example that does not have the clarity is the dragon halberd (again that is as for the image as of the time of this writing), this example image would be better demonstrated on a large monster (at least 2x2 squares) to clearly show the double hit effect of the special. These images in their form (as of the time of this writing) lack the clarity of the article and merely demonstrate a red motion-blur effect, which is not the primary focus of the special.

Regarding Concise Clarity specific to Clue scroll locations
Clue scroll location images should have the minimap included in the picture, especially for those located in the wilderness. Many readers would like to be able to quickly get to their destination spot in order to leave the wilderness. For example, if an SD image that has a minimap is replaced with an HD one that does not have a minimap, then our readers are being disserviced as the clarity of the location image has become compromised in regards to the content of the image.

Note that not all animations are necessary. Try to minimise excessive animations within articles.

  • Converting JPEGs to PNG (or GIF) should not be done unless the PNG is original and not derived from JPEG. If an image is originally JPEG format, then it is likely best to leave it in that format until a better original comes along. Converting JPEGs to PNG virtually always excessively increases the size of the image and does not add any quality. Therefore save time and bandwidth, leave JPEG files as JPEG unless recreating them from scratch.

  • To all members- Please, send users who you see uploading or fixing images on the RuneScape Wiki a message about joining this group so we can establish a good base of contributors.
  • New templates- One of our members has made a series of templates to help with replacing low-quality GIFs and images which display other undesired artefacts as well. These include:
    • Animations that are not anti-aliased, Be sure to be on the lookout for these so they can be tagged {{aa needed}} for potential future revision by our animation experts (SD animation updates should take precedence over HD non-antialiased animations however).
    • Still images that were converted from GIF animations often have a grainy quality about them that would look better without. These images should be tagged {{AnimGif}} (or {{ag}} for short) so that they can be replaced at a future date (SD images should take precedence over this).
    • Still images that have anti-aliasing enabled tend to have blurry lines making them difficult to properly make transparent. This is a problem as any reader could potentially have any colour background and as such some of the blurry edge lines will display remnants from the former background which they were lifted from. These types of images should be marked {{aa}} so that they may be updated in the future.
    • One exception to note with still images is images that are not to be made transparent. These are a very small minority and should be captured with anti-aliasing enabled. For such images that do not have anti-aliasing and will not have transparency should be tagged {{aa needed}}.
    • Finally images that need transparency should be tagged {{transparent}}. This is not a new template but just a reminder for those new to image related templates.
