Ripper Demons are Slayer monsters that can be found in a cave under the Abbey of St. Elspeth Citharede. They require level 96 Slayer to be killed.

According to the miner journals and the diary of Jebediah Omnis, a prospector named Jebediah Omnis hired a group of miners to excavate a new mine underneath the Abbey. The miners reluctantly agreed, finding no ore in the process. One night, when they tried to leave the mine, they found that the entrance had mysteriously disappeared. Jebediah reanimated the mangled corpse of The Ripper, allowing it to search for new hosts. Over the course of the several days that they spent trapped in the mine, the remains of the previous Ripper started to latch onto the excavation party, painfully warping their bodies and turning them into ripper demons themselves. Jebediah Omnis turned out to be a vengeful Zarosian zealot who wanted to please his lord in reviving the legend of The Ripper.

Location

Ripper Demons can be found in an abandoned mine under the Abbey of St. Elspeth Citharede. To access the mine, climb down the steps near to the Abbey, east of Al Kharid's east gate. Even though the area can be entered through the Kharidian Desert, the steps on the path to the Abbey are faster.

Mechanics

It is highly advised to use Protect/Deflect Melee when fighting Ripper Demons, as their attacks are extremely fast, accurate. Much like Nail beasts, Ripper Demons can attack up to three times per "attack", with each hit capable of dealing up to 1700 damage each. Ripper demons are static upon attacking and if it cannot reach the player, it will teleport to them and perform Slaughter on them. As the mine is extremely cramped, multi-targeting abilities (including the Barrage and Burst spells) are not recommended as it will cause more demons to attack you. It is recommended to use Devotion to get 100% protection for a small duration and Debilitate when Devotion is on cooldown. If using a defender, the other defensive abilities will prove useful as well. When using magic, consider taking along a Staff of Light. Its special attack has no cooldown and reduces incoming damage significantly.

Although normally unaggressive, if the player's health drops below 35% of their lifepoints, other nearby demons will attack the player even if they are in combat, which can be difficult to maintain due to their rapid attack speed and the player will most likely be hit with Slaughter if this happens. Ensure that you keep your health above 35% and use the smaller room, as there are only three ripper demons roaming in there. If you are attacked by too many ripper demons, it is advised to teleport out immediately.

The demons make use of the adrenaline system, gaining adrenaline as they attack. Once their adrenaline bar is full, which often happens within a matter of attacks, they will leap up and disappear. The adrenaline bar will deplete entirely when the attack begins and then a shadow will appear west of where the demon had been previously. If the player is next to or directly on the shadow when the demon lands, they will receive 32,000 damage, resulting in instant death. Resonance will not prevent the damage or restore health, as the damage is typeless. In addition, and for the same reasons, the damage is unaffected by Debilitate and Reflect. Barricade and Immortality do work against the instant-kill attack; however, Immortality is not advised as it only heals the player 40% of their life points, which is dangerously close to the 35% threshold when demons become aggressive.

As the shadow appears west of the player's location, simply running in any other direction is preferable to avoid being hit. If the player is positioned in a way that the ripper demon cannot land west of them, the shadow will appear on top of the player's position instead. Take care not to accidentally click on another demon when running away. Being in the middle of the room will give more space to avoid the attack. Once the demon lands, there is a 2 second period where the demon will not attack. Immediately rush back to melee distance to prevent the demon from teleporting to you and using Slaughter. If you are too far, simply let the demon teleport to you and freedom the incoming Slaughter if it hits. After the ability is used, the demon's bar will not appear for 20-30 game ticks, so kill it quickly before it appears.

When a demon is defeated, they will start attacking wildly around them, dealing 950 melee damage per tick to nearby players before dying. Simply run away from the area when it is about to die. Prayers and abilities can block some of the incoming damage, and the Staff of Light special attack will reduce this damage.

Trivia

  • Upon release, Ripper Demons had the following properties that were changed on 28 November 2016:
    • Their spin attack dealt melee damage, but Protect/Deflect Melee and damage reducing abilities would be unable to reduce this damage. They can now be reduced/blocked.
    • Ripper Demons used to be aggressive if the player was at 50% or lower hitpoints. This was changed to 35%.
    • The Ripper Demon's time to use their instant-kill attack was significantly prolonged.
    • Ripper Demons' drop tables were "substantially" buffed.
  • A bug caused a single Ripper Demon to attack the player as soon as they entered the mine. This was fixed on 28 November 2016.
