A red balloon is a smaller version of a hot air balloon made during the Enlightened Journey quest to test the scientific principles of a hot air balloon. The red balloon is created by using red dye on an origami balloon. Making a coloured balloon is optional, and will have the same effect in the quest as a standard balloon.
