Red dragons are the second strongest chromatic dragons. They primarily attack using a Fire Bolt spell, but as with all dragons, they can use a magic-based dragonfire attack. They also use melee if the player gets within melee range. The dragonbreath attack can hit from a distance as well as up close, so an anti-dragon shield, the Protect from Magic prayer, or an antifire potion are essential when fighting them as they can otherwise hit over 1500. It is an underrated monster as the red dragonhides and dragon bones are worth large amounts of money. Money can be made by selling their drops. Collecting the hides and bones makes each kill worth approximately 5,148 coins.
If assigned red dragons as a slayer task, baby red dragons may be killed as an alternative.

Strengths and weaknesses
Edit

Like all chromatic dragons, Red dragons have high defence against melee and are weak to arrows. In order to take advantage of their weakness, however, the Protect from Magic prayer or Super antifire potions are required, as there is currently no bow that can provide dragonfire protection on its own. Alternatively, thrown weapons or one-handed crossbows can be used with an anti-dragon shield, but arrows will always give the fastest kill rates, particularly if using a stronger bow such as the Crystal bow or Zaryte bow, and should always be used if the player is willing to pay for the necessary potions.
The Red Dragon Isle is recommended for players willing to risk death and the loss of all their items, because it provides a relatively unused area but unfortunately is extremely dangerous as players in that area can be a target for player killers, and players can only keep one item on death (if using Protect Item).
The Brimhaven Dungeon location is a safer place to combat Red Dragons. If you are fighting them here, you will need 875 coins for the entrance fee, or alternatively Karamja gloves 3 which also provide a teleport. The biggest issue for players less than level 101 combat is the interference from the nearby level 50 Wild dogs. It can be useful to bring Bones to Peaches tablets to turn bones from a few dogs into food. After some time the dogs stop being aggressive, so longer sessions at the dragons have fewer such interruptions and make it a lot safer to collect the drops as long as a player stays within a fairly limited area.
You can also melee them, but this is not recommended as they have fairly high melee defence. In order to get a consistent kill rate, you will require at least level 80 Attack and Strength, high level armour, and a strong weapon such as a Chaotic rapier or abyssal whip. You will also need to bring least a super set, good food, and maintain a careful rotation of both offensive and defensive abilities, as you will be at a disadvantage on the combat triangle. Eating monkfish is recommended when your constitution level is below 70 and gives a fair profit.
These dragons do not drop the draconic visage.
