[edit] The different types of pures
[edit] Obsidian Pure
The Obsidian pure's best defence bonuses comes from an Iron platebody, black d'hide chaps, berserker necklace, and obsidian cape, any boots and any gloves. The obsidian pure usually uses a TzHaar-ket-om. Their strength level usually varies from 60-99 so they can easily cause a lot of damage! These pures are commonly found in PvP worlds and bounty worlds.
The idea of an obsidian pure is to stay at 1 attack, whilst training strength to be very high, allowing them to inflict large damage at a low combat level, while sacrificing accuracy.
[edit] 1 Defence Pure
Here the name speaks for itself, 1 defence and the attack level varies from 1-99. There are many different combinations of this type of character.
- 20 attack pures: Corrupt Warrior's Equipment e.g. Corrupt Vesta's Longsword
If non-member, mithril weapons are often used, such as the Mithril Scimitar and 2h. This is sometimes combined with a shortbow and higher-strength arrows. A pure at this level with 30-40 Strength is capable of hitting 8s, 9s and 10s.
Others in F2P may combine this with a maple shortbow and 40+ Ranged for Green D-Hide chaps.
- 50 attack pures: Granite Maul, or Rangers would use a magic shortbow
- 60 attack pures: Dragon Mace, Dragon Dagger, Dragon Scimitar, Dragon Two Hander, Dragon Claws, Dragon Longsword
Some F2P rich pures may consider using corrupt dragon weapons for K.O blows.
[edit] Initiate Pure
All from 1 attack to 99 here also they have 20 defence and use initiate armour which gives a bonus to your prayer. There are also a 30 defence version a proselyte pure which uses the proselyte armour.
[edit] Rune Pure
Attack level varies here also and there are many versions of this type of pure. Either they have 40 defence and use regular rune armour or they can have 45 defence and use a berserker helmet and barrow gloves if they have completed Recipe for Disaster, some people think it's not worth the time or have levelled their defence up without doing the quests needed to stay at 45 defence and settles for gloves which are easier to require. 40 Defence in F2P offers the advantage of wearing the best non-degradeable F2P armour, and the 200+ defence stats will help greatly in survival.
[edit] Barrows Pure
Some people do not count these characters as pures, but they usually have a high attack level and 70 defence with a high strength level. They usually wear Dharok's/Torags full rune with a dragon weapon, whip - a godsword depending on attack level.
[edit] 5 Defence or "Steel" Pure
5 Defence or Steel pures are very similar to 1 Defence Pures, only with the obvious added advantage of 5 Defence. Since this only raises combat level by 1-2, 5 Defence may be worthwhile to equip steel armours and some basic defence against attacks. Though weaker than black armour, it is useful since you have little to lose on death. Another benefit of this is that it will still allow you to have very powerful attacks at a low level, whilst having increased tolerance to attack.
[edit] 10 Defence or "Black" Pure
Again, similar to 1 Defence Pures but with the addition of 10 Defence. 10 Defence allows the use of black armour, offering a boost from Steel, Iron and Bronze, therefore again adding more resistance to attack. The disadvantage is that black armour can be hard to buy and replace if lost, and the gained 3-4 combat levels that could have been spent on Strength. 10 Defence also allows the use of the hardleather body, provided the player has the required Ranged level.
[edit] 20 Defence or "Mithril" Pure
These are once more similar to the above, with 20 Defence. Advantages include the use of Mithril armour, offering a good 100+ for most Defence stats. While being cheaper than black armour, it is easy to replace and means little if lost. Since Mithril Armour supplies are so over-saturated on the Grand Exchange, this makes replacement even easier. However, 20 Defence is still weak, and you waste 6-7 combat levels that could be spent on maximising attack. It should be noted that 20 Defence also permits use of the Studded Leather Body, as long as the player has 20 Ranged. You can also wear corrupt pvp armours, and Mystic Robes.
[edit] 40-45 Defence or "Rune/Berserker" Pure
These accounts are not considered pures very often except among themselves. The advantages of being a "Rune Pure/Berserker Pure" as that you can wear rune armour, torso, and for berserker pures, berserker helmets which offer a +3 strength bonus. You can also wear d hide bodys if you have the range level.
[edit] "Paladin" or Prayer Pure
Using monk robes for armour and with a high prayer level, this type of Pure usually has a medium Attack level and high Strength. Using prayer to fight offers them the benefit of more accurate, high strength attacks. Sadly, monk robes offer no defence, and so many find themselves quickly slaughtered by other pures or normal players.
[edit] Granite or 50Def pure
The granite pure has 50 defence allowing it to tank and stand a chance against other pures.
[edit] Other
These are just examples of Pures. Not all fall into these categories, obviously, but many types do exist. Please add more Pure types if possible.
[edit] Making your own pure
[edit] Which type of pure to choose
It is not always easy to know which type of pure you want to have but to start out with a 1 defence pure is never wrong since then you can always get defence up later if you are not satisfied, which you cannot if you for example made a rune pure. In terms of combat style, choose according to your wants. If you think you will need swift, fast damage it is best to train a Ranged pure. For powerful, accurate attacks Melee is the right choice. And finally, Magic is the most worthwhile if you think you will be mostly chasing after opponents. You may also wish to combine 2, or utilise all 3 to be prepared fully. It should however be noted that the more combat styles you choose to specialise, the more HP you will gain as a result of training. The only exception is magic with "curse" training, alchemy spells and teleports. Summoning is a very rarely used skill when training a pure, but do not underestimate it. With a low combat level gain and the ability to use powerful creatures in combat and to resgain precious Hitpoints, summoning may be useful. However, summoning should only be considered by rich pures - it costs a lot of money to power-level summoning.
[edit] Things to remember
- Some pures do require questing your defence up for example, most berserker pures quest up their defence from the Recipe for Disaster quests and other quests such as Holy Grail and Dragon Slayer
- To get the maximum strength bonus on a Zerker Pure you will have to complete Recipe for Disaster in order to get a pair of Barrows gloves which are the gloves that provide the highest Strength bonus in-game.
- To be able to complete the quest you will have to do a lot of different quests before you can complete the actual quest fully, and some of these quests do give defence experience.
- A thing to remember is patience. Pures require time, effort and work to be effective. Also, keep your eye on your remaining hitpoints, especially if a 1 Defence pure. Pures with low Defence can easily be ripped apart by higher-leveled monsters and players.
- Do not get frusterated if you find yourself taking a lot of hits. This is just a disadvantage of being a pure. Shrug it off, and simply bring food. Alternatively, and if affordable, go ahead and get 43 Prayer. You'll find the added benefits help greatly, and at a cost of only 6 or so combat levels, it's a good choice.
[edit] Training your pure
Training 1 defence pures is very different from training an account with 30+ defence since 1 defence pures most often require quite a bit of food.
But there are ways to avoid wasting food such as doing Soul Wars or Pest Control. Xp lamps are a good F2P alternative.
[edit] Where to level your strength
[edit] Levels 1-10 Attack and Strength
All right, so your a beginner pure and your looking for a place to train. (Note: The beginning of this guide is the same for members and free-to-play players.) The best places for these levels would be the chickens or the cows. You can find the chickens at the chicken coops in Lumbridge and cows in Lumbridge by the Al Kharid toll gate. If you are collecting cowhides, kill the cows by where the gnomecopters used to be. There is a deposit box so you can bank all of the cowhides you get. Killing men at Edgeville can be worthwhile and rewarding if you pick up the Earth Talisman drops, worth around 4K each! These are probably the best places to train a pure at this level.
Another less known spot to kill cows is at the crafting guild.
Alternatively, you can train on the Varrock Dummies until level 8 attack, receiving no hitpoints exp.
[edit] Levels 10-30 Attack and Strength
If you are F2P go to a cow field in Lumbridge and get your strength and attack up to 30. If you are P2P you can head to the rock crabs next to Rellekka and find a pretty empty server. To get them to auto-attack you just have to walk next to them and they will attack you. If there is a person with a cannon don't get angry, just switch worlds, the time you spend yelling your head off at them could be spent trying to train.
There are many of monsters to train on on this level such as goblins, spiders, you name it. Check out the bestiary to find something you think seems fun to kill.
[edit] Levels 30-40 Attack and Strength
F2p should now go to the monastery and start eliminating the monks that reside there. P2p should continue killing rock crabs or if you have finished Creature of Fenkenstrain you could go kill experiments which have 100 hp! That's 400 experience for one kill!
[edit] Levels 40-99 Strength only
The rest of your journey is pretty much up to you now. P2p should continue hammering at rock crabs and experiments, while f2p players should now start killing Hill giants until level 60 strength. At 60 strength f2p players should say goodbye to their trusty hill giants and move on to flesh crawlers, but if you get bored from flesh crawlers F.O.G (Fist of Guthix) is always a good place to train.
[edit] Monsters to kill for a pure
In the bestiary there are many of monsters for you to check out. See which one you would like to kill, try to keep to the low level monsters unless you are going to use protect from melee since you can end up losing quite a bit of food while training at high levelled monsters.
Some monsters a Pure may train on with minimal damage:
