Protect from Magic is a Prayer accessible at level 37. Protect from Magic drains prayer points by 10 points per 3 seconds which is equal to Deflect Magic, the Ancient Curse. When used, the player receives a 50% damage reduction from Magic attacks used by monsters and receives a 40% damage reduction from other players' magic attacks. Some players combine this spell with armour that has strong resistance to magic, thus giving maximum protection against players; when faced with NPC opponents with multiple attack styles, strong melee armour with high melee and ranged defence along with this prayer is often the best way to reduce damage. It also reduces the effect of curse spells by 50%; for instance, a 10 second binding spell lasts for 5 seconds, and a 5 minute Teleport Block only lasts for 2.5 minutes, though the holding time of Ancient Magicks ice spells is not affected by this prayer; however, the damage is still reduced. Players using this prayer have an image of the Magic skill's icon over themselves.
One relatively unknown use of this prayer is protection against dragon's fiery breath. This is particularly useful for fighting chromatic dragons, which are weak to arrows. It appears to have the same effects of an antifire potion. When attacked by a dragon's breath and using this prayer, the chatbox informs the player that "Your prayers help resist some of the dragonfire!" However, Protect from Magic used with an Anti-dragon shield does not fully negate dragon breath, using it with antifire potion does even worse. When combined with the effects of the potion, the player will receive two messages, the first being "Your prayers resist some of the dragon fire", the second appearing immediately below reading "Your potion slightly protects you from the heat of the dragon's breath." When used with an anti-dragon shield, the prayer is ignored and you will receive the message "Your shield absorbs most of the dragon's fiery breath", the player will be hit for the same amount of damage had they been using either the shield, or the prayer, on its own.
The power of this prayer is sufficient to completely block the attacks of a high-level godly avatar of Bandos, as well as the Magic-based attacks of at least certain deities of the Menaphite pantheon, such as Het, Scabaras, Crondis, and Apmeken.
This prayer cannot nullify all forms of magical effects, however. Iban's attacks, though clearly mystical in nature, still harm players using this prayer. Stealing the Wine of Zamorak with this prayer activated does not prevent players' stats from being considerably reduced, nor is it capable of shielding players from the cursed flames they are struck with when they take the Wine. This prayer cannot negate teleportation spells, such as those of Aubury or leprechauns, as well as those of any other NPC, cast on players, nor can it prevent other players from using Tele-other spells on players. Malignius Mortifer still easily changes a player into a mushroom despite this prayer. The use of this Prayer cannot prevent monks from magically healing players. The magical attacks of the snails of Mort Myre Swamp are also capable of hitting through this prayer. It does not block or reduce the damage received when failing to exorcise the Dark Spirit, nor does it shield players from the stat-draining effects of the legendary Phoenix's Dust Attack, though it can prevent Strongbones from summoning Skoblins, and neutralize his and Redeyes's ability to decrease players' stats. The attacks of Ogre shamans, inflicting as much as 300 life points of damage, while Magic-based, cannot be blocked by this prayer. The Undead Rot special attack of the Unholy cursebearer is capable of harming players even with them using the power of this Prayer, and, despite invoking this Prayer, players are still susceptible to the effects of the magical barrier Dahmaroc set around the Completionist cape, which forces them to turn into a random animal and blows them away.
