The papaya tree is a fruit tree that may be grown by the player with the Farming skill. Level 57 farming is needed to plant a papaya tree seed in a plant pot that has been filled with dirt from any gardening patch. A gardening trowel is needed to plant the seed, then it must be watered with a watering can. This action is all performed in the inventory or backpack section of the screen. A planted Papaya tree takes 960 minutes (roughly 16 hours, may take longer if needed) to be fully grown.

After 15 minutes or less, the planted seed will become a Papaya sapling and can then be transferred to a Fruit tree patch. The fruit tree patch must be raked clean of weeds. Compost or Supercompost may be added prior to planting using a spade and trowel. The nearby farmer will watch over your fruit tree patch for the cost of 10 pineapples (may be noted). The high cost of papaya tree seeds in relation to the cost of pineapples makes it advisable to pay the farmer to watch over it.

Planting the papaya tree sapling gives 72 farming experience. When fully grown and checked, the player will be granted 6,146.6 farming experience. If the farmer does not watch the tree, then disease may grow on the tree which may be removed using secateurs. However, if left alone, the diseased tree will perish.

A papaya tree sapling may take up to ~840 minutes (~fourteen hours), even a little longer, to fully grow. An Amulet of nature may be bound to the patch to provide progress on its growth.

Once mature, the tree produces six papaya fruits at a time. Each papaya fruit, when picked, gives 27 farming experience. Once all 6 papaya fruits have been picked, the tree will slowly produce more fruits until all 6 are available again. Generally, it takes 30 minutes for a papaya to grow back, so about 3 hours are required for all 6 to grow back. However, the papaya fruits may be picked anytime they show up on the tree.

Papaya seeds may be obtained from Pawya as well as bird's nests and Jade vine, or other monster drops; papaya fruits are required to trap Pawya.

For the Tirannwn Tasks (medium) a papaya grown from a tree in the elven lands is required for the Papa Pawya task.

For the Ardougne Tasks (hard), a papaya tree (or a palm tree if the player chooses to), must be grown and have its fruit picked in the fruit tree patch west of the Tree Gnome Village.

Production costs[]

The data in this table is based on Grand Exchange prices of a Papaya tree seed and Papaya fruit, assuming one seed is processed to 6 papaya fruits and a gardener is paid with 10 pineapples to keep the patch disease-free.

Material cost Profit/loss Profit/xp
8,226 25,146 3.94

Farming all 7 Fruit tree patches will provide 44,664.2 Farming experience, costing −176,022 gold coins.

Picking papaya fruits from all 7 Fruit tree patches renders 233,604 coins, which can be sold on the Grand Exchange to offset the cost of the seeds. Players may choose to wait for the papaya fruits to regrow and pick them again to minimise money loss.
