Onyx

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

Onyx is a rare volcanic gem with a shiny black lustre which is used in the Crafting skill to make jewellery. There are only 2 ways to obtain an uncut onyx.

An uncut onyx requires a Crafting level of 67 to cut, granting 167.5 crafting experience. Though it is occasionally worth more cut than uncut, cutting the onyx in hopes of earning money is not advised because of the extremely low demand for onyx gems. It would cost approximately six billion to get 99 Crafting by cutting Onyx.

Members can also use the Fletching skill to cut an onyx into Onyx bolt tips by using a chisel on a 'cut' onyx at level 73 Fletching. Cutting an onyx into bolt tips grants the player 9 experience in the Fletching skill and gives the player 24 Onyx bolt tips, although this practice is highly unrecommended due to the rarity of the gem and the fact that TzHaar-Ket and TzHaar-Xil both drop Onyx bolt tips rather commonly.

The Personalised shops update on 2 September 2009 raised the price of an Onyx in the TzHarr shops more than tenfold to 2,700,000 Tokkul. Although Tokkul are awarded in increased numbers, the shops buys items or runes at a diminishing rate. Using the most efficient methods, the coins to Tokkul ratio is approximately 1:0.8, and requires much more time than before, because world switching doesn't affect the stocks anymore since the personal shops update. Many players feel that it is now more difficult, not less, to acquire the necessary Tokkul to purchase an Onyx.

Onyx jewellery looks significantly different from jewellery using other gems.
