A Needle is an item used along with thread to create armour out of either leather or dragonleather through the Crafting skill. It can be bought in crafting stores, such as the one in Al Kharid. They can also be bought from Moon Clan Fine Clothes on Lunar Isle.
Needles can be found by searching haystacks, hay bales, or digging in the Digsite. This is a reference to the idiom "needle in a haystack", which is defined as: "Something that is difficult or impossible to locate; something impossibly complex or intractable."
Needles are stackable items, although normal usage does not require them to be. If a player uses a needle on a cow, they will get the message: "the cow would not like that".
[edit] Tricks and scams
Some players who quit RuneScape (or some who are simply very rich and want to prank other players) will buy millions of needles from Crafting stores at 1 coin each and then put them in the Party Room. This causes many players to come to the party room in hopes of getting an item worth a large amount of coins, as the Bankers and other Non-player characters will say how much coins worth of item is being dropped in the Party Room, but will not distinguish between an item such as a Dragon chainbody and 7,000,000 needles.
Back in RuneScape Classic needles had a highly-transparent appearance, thus it was possible to scam players by placing a stack of several-thousand needles next to a stack of 1000 or more coins to give the illusion that there were several million coins up for trade.
