Monkfish are members-only food that heal 16 Hitpoints when consumed^[1]. During the Swan Song quest, players must fish fresh monkfish, a non-tradeable quest item that heals 1 Hitpoint when successfully cooked, then consumed.

Members with at least level 62 Fishing can catch raw monkfish, gaining 120 Fishing experience points per fish.^[2] They can do this with a small fishing net; but the only suitable fishing spot is at the Piscatoris Fishing Colony, which requires players to have completed Swan Song. Pures are able to do the Swan Song quest.

Members can cook the raw monkfish if they have at least level 62 Cooking, and gain 150 experience if they are successful in doing so.^[1]

Raw monkfish have a value on the Grand Exchange of 575 coins,^[3] and cooked monkfish have a value of 544 coins.^[4]

Failure to cook the raw monfish will produce burnt monkfish instead. This is one of the few apparently useless items that players can sell to the general store for cash. Most general stores will pay one coin each if they have less than three burnt monkfish in player stock, but the store in Keldagrim will pay one coin each if they have less than eight in player stock.

At level 89 Cooking, players burn about 1 out of every 120 monkfish during cooking. Burning monkfish becomes impossible after level 92 Cooking. It is for this reason that players are advised to use the cook's range in Lumbridge Castle under the level of 85, as this decreases the chance of burning. Recently, monkfish have gone up in value drastically and the price continues to rise.^[5]

Cooking gauntlets do not aid in the cooking of monkfish. It is impossible to burn them after 90, with or without the gauntlets.^[6]

[edit] Comparison with other foods

Monkfish are a very popular high level food as they are significantly cheaper than sharks, but heal almost as many Hitpoints (16 points versus 20).

Monkfish give 10 more fishing experience per catch than sharks, are caught much faster, and can be fished at a lower Fishing level than sharks. This makes monks a very efficient way of levelling up. In addition, they are lighter, so players engaging in a lot of running can run longer carrying monkfish than they can carrying sharks.

• The colony probably gets its name from the scientific name for the most common monkfish in the North Atlantic - Lophius piscatorius.
