Lit: A helmet with a lamp on it.
The Mining helmet is a light source that can be dropped by level 11 Cave Goblin Miners or bought at Miltog's lamp stall in the Dorgesh-Kaan market. It is a common reward for thieving from chests in Dorgesh-Kaan. It can also be given by Mistag (once) if you give him a Goblin brooch. Players must have completed the Lost Tribe quest to obtain it, but the quest is not required to equip it. This is extremely useful for going into dark places as it does not take up an inventory space, and because they do not go out on their own, a tinderbox is not needed - however, the Seer's headband is by far preferable as it does not need to be lit and cannot go out under any circumstances. Level 65 Firemaking is needed to light the mining helmet and the assist system doesn't help. Mining helmets were once valued at 10,000 coins each when the only way of obtaining them was as a rare drop from the Cave Goblin Miners.
It does not need to be equipped to count as a light source.
The light will go out when in the chamber filled with water in the Haunted Mine quest and also in the Sophanem Dungeon in the Contact! quest. It stays lit if you fail a stepping stone across water, like on the way to Tears of Guthix.
The game text after dropping a lit mining helmet: The helmet goes out as you drop it.
