Menagerie
From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape
The Menagerie is a room in a player-owned house where players can let their pets live in. You may only build one, but you have the ability to move it. (Move option is triggered by trying to build a second Menagerie.) A menagerie can house a maximum or three, six, or ten pets, depending upon what kind of pet feeder and pet house are built there.
All types of pets can be kept in Menageries and can roam around players' houses. You can put them in the shelter and they will run around the house. Pets must be fully grown to be placed in a shelter. Players can change the basic look of the Menagerie by changing the habitat. Players can also recharge their Summoning points if they've built an obelisk in the available hotspots
Building a Menagerie requires level 37 Construction and 30,000 coins.
There are 4 types of hotspots available:
- Mini Obelisk - Gives players an option to recharge their summoning points.
- Pet house - Holds any full grown pets the player has.
- Pet feeder - Feeds any hungry pets that a player has in his inventory.
- Habitat - The basic look and scenery of the Menagerie.

[edit] Obelisk
| Obelisk | Level | Materials | Experience | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mini obelisk | 41 | 1 marble block, 1000 spirit shards, 10 gold charms, 10 green charms, 10 crimson charms, 10 blue charms | 782 |
[edit] Pet feeder
The pet feeder is designed to provide as much food as your pets need, so you don't need to worry that any pets in your menagerie will go wandering off. It also can be used to feed any hungry pets in your inventory, as well as the one following you all at the same time. (When originally released it could only feed pets in your inventory.)
It is built in upgrades - you MUST build the previous feeder before it will let you build a higher level one. This is not mentioned in the official Game Guide.
| Pet feeder | Level | Materials | Experience | Pets supported | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak pet feeder | 37 | 4 Oak planks | 260 | 3 | |
| Teak pet feeder | 52 | 4 Teak planks | 380 | 6 | |
| Mahogany pet feeder | 67 | 4 mahogany planks, 1 gold leaf | 880 | 10 |
[edit] Pet house
The pet house is used for storing pets in your house, even if you are logged out. If you leave your pets here, they will walk around your house. Each pet house requires an equivalent pet feeder first. The pet house (as well as the pet feeder) is built in upgrades - you MUST build the previous model before it will let you build the next higher model. This fact is not mentioned in the official Game Guide.
All Summoning-related fully grown pets, and cats can live here. Baby pets can't live in the house. Some pets which don't have a grown version, like the Phoenixes and the Broav, can be stored in the pet house.

[edit] Glitches
On the day of release of the Menagerie, the Construction skill suffered various glitches.
- When the update first came out, when players tried enter their house through the portal or switch modes they would get the message "Invalid Teleport!" rapidly and may either be disconnected out of the game, or the waiting command gets cancelled. (Like going into building mode or going to your house)
- Occasionally whilst in building mode, another glitch prevented players from editing their houses and were prompted with the message "You can only do this in your own house.", despite the fact that building mode can only be turned on in your own house.
- While trying to build or upgrade the Menagerie hotspots, the upgraded version may not display in-game without the player leaving the house and returning.
- While trying to upgrade the Menagerie hotspots, players may be randomly teleported to another player's house that is in the same location.
- When looking at the House Option, when a player clicked on 'In House' they have been teleported to their house without the use of runes.
- The milestone tab disappeared on the construction tablet with the update.
- When turning building mode off inside the house, you will still see the shadows where you can build furniture.
- When you asked your butler to take logs to the sawmill after having him un-noting them, it would not charge you for the planking even though it noted that it would.
- The labrador is able to walk through walls and furniture.
[edit] Trivia
- Some pets seem to show up on the Minimap as an NPC, while most other pets don't show up on the minimap, but still count as NPCs
- Previous to the release of the new room, players all across the forums were calling for construction updates, including the ones released on August 18th, 2009. It is unknown whether Jagex released said updates because of popular demand or if they were already prepared
- When moving regular cats in and out of the pet house, players get the message: "Your pet clambers into the pet house/You take your pet out of the menagerie." Overgrown cats, however, have their messages as: "It's a tight fit, but your overgrown cat squeezes into the pet house/With a lot of strain, you take your overgrown cat out of the menagerie." Similarly Wily cats will say: "Your wily cat jumps into the pet house!/Your wily cat jumps out of the menagerie!".
- The Menagerie can only be built on the ground level.
- With the Menagerie update came a hidden update that allows players to move one-of-a-kind rooms such as the Menagerie and Costume Room.
- The fact that you can build a small obelisk in your POH suggests that the obelisks across RuneScape may not be a natural phenomenon.
- Summoning is no longer the only skill in which charms are useful as 10 of every basic charm can now be used in Construction by the process of building a small obelisk in the Menagerie which means skillers no longer need to drop charms which they have obtained from chests, they can now use a few of them to build a small obelisk for friends with high summoning.
- In the Construction Guidebook obtained from a Real Estate Agent or the bookshelves of a POH there is no category for the Menagerie Room- Not yet at least.
- In the update on 2nd September some changes were made to the menagerie, you could talk to pets who were roaming around your house, and clicking on the feeder fed pets who were following you at the time. In addition pet fish, pet rocks and clockwork cats were added to the pets allowed to be kept in the menagerie.
- Even when you build a polar habitat, your penguin may complain that it is too warm, even when standing in the menagerie. It also won't slide, like it does on snow elsewhere.
- Stationary pets like pet rocks and pet fish do not move from their location while you are in the house. If you leave and come back later, they sometimes will be in different places, suggesting that they somehow managed to move while you were gone.
- The 2009 Halloween update brought a new 'pet' - Eek the Spider. It can be stored in the Menagerie, as well in a Costume Room
- The type of habitat does not affect the pet. Example: a penguin can live in a volcanic habitat, though may still complain about it being warm, it has no other side-effects.
