[edit] Guidelines

The Sitenotice should be used very sparingly. Please feel free to discuss or add guidelines to this section without being accused for editing my post: Endasil (Talk) @ 22:54, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Guidelines

  1. Do not use this message to inform users of news. Announcements such as a user leaving the site should not fall under the domain of a sitenotice.
  2. Use this message for notices that wouldn't make sense to be archived. Something such as "Happy Holidays" is not news, and is temporary by nature and therefore is a good candidate for the Sitenotice.
  3. Use this message to promote areas of the site that are receiving extreme neglect. For example, voting that has been neglected (RFA, etc).
  4. Do not use this message to announce an upcoming event. Such topics belong in the Events forum. An exception to this rule is advertising about a community-endorsed event (such as Wikifest) on or shortly before the time of the event.
  5. Guideline This Mediawiki component is protected to be edited by admins only. If the message you are posting would benefit you more than other, non-admin users, you are abusing the notice.

[edit] Discussion

It's a pretty good policy - easy to obey. Emosworld 09:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
I don't agree with rule number 4. Every time the only advertisement of a WikiFest is on the forum, it fails. Which is pretty much every time.  C Teng talk 21:17, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
I have altered rule 4 per above and RuneScape:Yew_grove#Sitenotice_Exceptions.3F Endasil (Talk) @ 14:54, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
I still don't like rule 4. I'm trying to get people to join my God Wars event, and I've posted a message on the forums. But no one's read my post on the forums (except me), let alone answered it. I could get so many more people by putting it on the sitenotice, and what harm would it do? People can just dismiss it if they're not interested. -- Telos Talk

[edit] Fan Fiction

I think something like

The RuneScape Fan Fiction wiki is up and running! Feel free to contribute there!

would be a good sitenotice.—Darthtyler Scuba_Diver.gif Talk 06:21, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] -.-...

Look at the sitenotice and think about what it's saying. Then delete the mistake that is ever-so-clear. Wow, this is heavy!CashmanOoh shiny!! talk|editcount 01:04, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Since when...

Since when do notable and large events not go on the Sitenotice? Criteria two says, "Use this message for notices that wouldn't make sense to be archived.". Something like "you can go see this now at this place" wouldn't make sense to be archived. I mean... Just look at it!

In the first few seconds alone, you can see how big this is. Not just any riot can get your screen filmed with text. Wait—I don't even use this anymore!Chiafriend12Man-skirt, or authentic Scottish kilt? 02:40, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
It doesn't make sense to be archived, but it doesn't make sense to be on the sitenotice either. This riot isn't even related to the wiki except through the common topic of RuneScape. We don't need to advertise its existence on the top of every single page. Skill 02:43, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Though it may not fit on the sitenotice (which I agree to), how else can editors be notified en mass (not rhetorical)? Many editors don't go on the forums often, though I guess that could be another (though not as effective) way of notifying the community. Wait—I don't even use this anymore!Chiafriend12Man-skirt, or authentic Scottish kilt? 04:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Why does the community need to know in the first place? That's the point I'm trying to make. Again, it's just yet another riot that will accomplish nothing but getting a bunch of players muted. Skill 10:23, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sitenotice not appearing

Why isn't it appearing for me? It was until about a couple weeks ago. I haven't dismissed it, and even if I did, the id would have put it back. Is it just my computer, or are anyone else having my problems?  C Teng talk 18:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Clan Wars?

For the MediaWiki header, I would like there to be a link to my hosting of Clan Wars for F2P. I would like it to say this:

Wikia has upgraded to MediaWiki 1.13.1, which is the latest stable version of the software that runs the wiki. If you see any issues due to this update, report them on this forum page.

The Autumn Wikifest 2008 will be on Saturday, October 4 at 9:00 pm GMT. Please see this page for more details. Sign here if you plan on coming. Sign up for fortress wars here!

I'm not sure either... its easier to tell the different pieces of news apart, but... it just looks odd. I think the thread about it needs to be reborn. Quests FTW! Gaz Lloyd Calcs!Awesome 22:26, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Done. Quests FTW! Gaz Lloyd Calcs!Awesome 22:45, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't have to be bullets, but we need some way to keep the pieces of news apart. Dr5ag2on1 22:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay, um.... Howabout we set it up where we seperate each piece with a template:clear and a </ br> or just one of them, or we alternate bolding one and not the other, or italics one but not the other...
Something like this
Then this
Than this
or
Something like this
And then like this

Just an idea. 22:37, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RuneScape Civil War

I think it's sort of unfair that Chia and Caleb are allowed to advertise their Civil War on the sitenotice yet others cannot use it to advertise such things. It isn't a Wikifest and there are no official pages about the Civil War. AEAE anyone? -- Telos Talk 08:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

If its wrong then it is my fault entirely, they did not ask for it to be there. The reasons behind my doing so was that so many people on the wiki showed interest that it fell into what I believed to be a community event. And something of this sort that has so much interest helps the build the community.--Degenret01 09:08, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I can see you had the best interests of the community at heart. I propose we rewrite the 'Rule 4' that Endasil posted near the top. -- Telos Talk 18:24, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I keep reading rule 4 and I feel its already covering the wiki war with the words "community endorsed". It is being kept strictly to wikians and quite a good number of us. I am not arguing, I just don't know how to reword it any better. Seems sufficient to me at this point.--Degenret01 05:26, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
I see your point. I guess it's alright then. :P -- Telos Talk 07:18, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Grammatical Change

Can we put a space inside the Sitenotice? so

! [[MediaWiki:Sitenotice|SiteNotice]] <span style="color:#808080;">last updated on {{#time: j F Y|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}}}</span>

reads

! [[MediaWiki:Sitenotice|Site Notice]] <span style="color:#808080;">last updated on {{#time: j F Y|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}}}</span>

[edit] Biased

"We have decided to change the Main Page for RuneScape Wiki. The new design is located at RuneScape:Main Page. Please feel free to improve on it. If you would like to give feedback and/or submit bug reports, go to the discussion here. Thanks." - We have decided to change it yes, but not about the design yet. I don't understand why suddenly after 2 days one new "merged" design gets made from two in the discussion and gets put up in the SiteNotice in a prominent way while there was a proposed one during 4 weeks which is different then this. I am asking any sysop to change the description in the sitenotice to a more general way, and to only link to the discussion instead of another new design where every1 can let his fantasy go. [edit] Dismissed

I accidentally dismissed this and now I want it back up again. How do I do it? --NuparuMahnika 08:00, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

You'll have to wait until its updated and MediaWiki:Sitenotice id is changed, unfortunately. Though you can still check out the message on this page. Quests FTW! Gaz Lloyd Calcs!Awesome 09:58, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
