Father McGruder was a monk from the Edgeville Monastery. He was kidnapped by a Kinshra raiding party, along with Father Hackett and Sisters Lara and Esther from the Abbey of St. Elspeth Citharede, on orders of the witch Lensig. Lensig, then disguised as Captain Dulcin, intended to sacrifice them in the Tomb of the Fallen so that their virtuous blood could breach the final ward guarding the Wand of Resurrection.
While his blood may have been virtuous enough, it was given involuntarily, for McGruder and the others had been starved into giving their blood. As such, it was not accepted and the protective ward reduced his hand to a bloodless stump before torturing him to death.

- Even though McGruder's hand is supposed to be reduced to "a bloodless stump", upon examination it can be seen that he has both hands.
