Lumbridge Beginner guide

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

This article has been nominated to be featured on the Main Page.
You can discuss the nomination on this article's entry.
RuneScape uses the British convention for floor numbering: Ground floor, first floor (immediately above the ground floor), second floor, etc.

The Lumbridge Beginner guide continues where the Unstable Foundations tutorial ended and deposited you into the live RuneScape world.

At this point the game can seem vast and easily overwhelming, this guide intends to ease that thought and help you play the game and have fun.

Contents

[edit] Merchants, banks, skills, oh my!

[edit] Starting Out

After finishing your tutorial, you will be deposited in a courtyard.

  • This area is known as Lumbridge or Lumbridge Castle.
  • Make note of the Lumbridge Tutor, he provides some useful information not covered in the tutorial and additional details about what you can do.
The new player starting location in front of Lumbridge Castle.

[edit] Orientation

RuneScape is vast and you will probably get lost. The world map can be accessed by clicking the globe icon in the top rightmost corner of your screen under your minimap.

  • The "You Are Here" marker will show your exact location in the world. The "You Are Here" marker can be removed or replaced anytime. It also shows the shape of the land, and the location of banks and shops. Note that sometimes what the world map shows is not the same as you minimap. This is because the world map shows everything on the RuneScape surface, while the minimap only shows everything on the same level as you.

[edit] Organisation

  • After finishing your tutorial, you will likely have a handful of items. As you can only hold 28 items in your inventory, you might want to open your bank. Go into the castle and climb to the second floor. You will see a yellow $ sign on your minimap, indicating a bank. You can talk to the bank tutor to find out more about using the bank.
  • You may want to have some protection. Start by equipping your bronze sword and wooden shield. To do this, simply left click each of them once. If you prefer using ranged attacks, equip your bow and arrows. Whichever item you equip will now be equipped on your body and be providing whatever combat bonuses they provide.
  • There are many shops in RuneScape. To familiarise yourself, go to the Lumbridge general store, north of the castle. On your minimap, the icon is a clay pot. Try buying and selling a few items, such as a tinderbox or some shears.
  • Click on the question mark symbol(?) on the top right hand corner next to the log out button to talk to the advisor. He will give you plenty of help and you can even do some mini-tutorials if you want.

[edit] Starting Your Adventure

You are now ready to go out and explore the world of RuneScape. However, there are an uncountable number of things to do. Here are the main things that are done in RuneScape.

  • Exploring
  • Money Making
  • Skill Training
  • Questing
  • Monster Hunting

[edit] Exploring

Exploring is one of the easiest things that you can do. All that you have to do is to point and click at where you want to go. Click on the globe symbol for a complete map of the Runescape world. It is recommended to new players, as familiarising yourself with the world is quite useful. Below are a few cities/towns and directions to get there from Lumbridge.

[edit] Varrock

Main article: Varrock

Varrock, the capital of Misthalin, is one of the most popular cities in RuneScape. One of it's main features, and the reason that it is so frequently visited, is the Grand Exchange. To get Varrock, use your world map and search for Varrock. You can also use a newcomer map item.  Varrock is directley north of Lumbridge. You can ask players to help you get to Varrock or wherever you need to go, but beware of scams. Here, you can buy and sell items from or for your adventures. You will most likely be coming here soon, either to sell some items that you found, or to buy some weapons and armour.

[edit] Al Kharid

Main article: Al Kharid

Al Kharid, the desert city, is located south-west of Lumbridge. To get there, cross the river Lum, and go to the border gate. You will need 10 coins to go through, but is free if you complete the Prince Ali Rescue quest. Once across the gate, go south-east until you hit the city.

This city is a popular place for smelting ores, due to the furnace that is near the bank. There is also a mine to the North, but beware of scorpians if you are a low level.  There is also a tannery, where you can tan cowhides for a small fee. Al Kharid also has a gem shop, a musician to restore your run energy, a crafting shop, general store, plateleg shop. Also, there are a number of shops that sell low-level weapons and armour. A few quest, ranges, water sources, fishing spots and Faruq's tools are here, as well as the Duel Arena close by.

[edit] Draynor Village

Main article: Draynor Village

Draynor Village is a quiet town, west of Lumbridge. Follow the dirt path from the north of Lumbridge to the west, until it joins a paved road. Draynor Village is considered to be part of the starting area. Here in Draynor Village you can fish, cut some wood, explore the dungeon below and much more. Diango is in the village square. You can buy some toys off of him, or replace your lost Holiday items. Joining him, is the town crier who will explain the rules of conduct to anyone. Aggie the witch can make you dyes if you get her the right items and pay her a small fee.

This town has many willow trees right next to a bank, so it is often crowded with people training their woodcutting.

[edit] Money Making

Main article: Money Making guide

Making Money can be quite dreary, especially later on, but in the beginning, not so much is needed, so it will not be too hard.

[edit] Jobs

Main article: Jobs

Jobs are one of the easiest ways to make money. Jobs are small tasks that you can be appointed to by NPCs in and around Lumbridge. These are anything from killing cows and chickens, to cooking some herrings. You will get a small sum of money as a reward from the NPC that gave you the job.

Due to the 17 September 2009 update, Jobs have become much more limited than before.

[edit] Killing Monsters

Main article: Combat

Killing Monsters can be very profitable at higher levels. However, when you start, you can only hope to get a few coins, or sell the bones that are dropped. Try attacking Men and Women around the castle, and you can get some cash. You could go to the Grand Exchange to sell the things they dropped.

[edit] Exploring

There are a few places that you can get a cash reward just by going to a location. One of these is the Stronghold of Player Safety. To get there, go to Varrock. At the fountain, turn to the west. When you get to the Barbarian Village, go to the eastern side, exit the village, and walk north. You will find a jail entrance. Enter it, and decend to the bottom level to open a chest, which contains 10,000 coins, 2 experience lamps, and safety gloves. For more information, see the Stronghold of Player Safety article.

[edit] Skill Training

This is the thing you will probably be doing the most later on. Skill levels are gained when enough experience is gained in that skill. In turn, experience is gained by practising a skill or doing quests. The higher your level, the more things you can do that are related to that skill. There are many tutors to teach you how to start, so if you don't understand something you can always try asking a tutor.

[edit] Fishing

Main article: Fishing

Fishing is used to catch fish from streams, rivers, or the ocean. To start, talk to Hank, trade and get a Crayfish cage. Then go fish in a Cage spot located opposite Lumbridge Castle. Later on, you will be able to use better equipment, to catch bigger fish. To catch a fish, find a place in the water where there are bubbles coming out, and click on the spot.

[edit] Woodcutting

Main article: Woodcutting

Woodcutting is used to get logs from trees. You can buy a hatchet from Bob, located in his shop in southern Lumbridge. Almost all trees in RuneScape can be cut, though you need the appropriate level to cut them. To cut a tree, have a hatchet in your inventory, and click on the tree.

[edit] Firemaking

Main article: Firemaking

Firemaking is the art of lighting the logs from woodcutting with a tinderbox. Buy a tinderbox at a general store. Then get some logs in your inventory, and "use" your tinderbox on the logs (click on the tinderbox, then the logs). Your character will light a fire on the spot where you are standing.

[edit] Cooking

Main article: Cooking

To start cooking, you will need some meat or fish, and a fire. Once you get the fire going, click on the thing you want to cook in your inventory, and then click on the fire. You may also use a range, which can cook a greater variety of food and burns food less often.. Success is not 100%, and you will likely burn things a lot at first. Don't worry though, at a higher level you will burn things much less often. Additionally, Lumbridge castle range has a decreased chance of burning food compared to other ranges, but you need to complete the Cook's Assistant quest to use it.

[edit] Mining

Main article: Mining

Mining is the art of getting ores from rocks. Go to the Mining Tutor, who is south of Lumbridge. He will teach you how to prospect and mine ores. Try mining the first two ores that you can, copper and tin. Mining, is considered one of the best ways to make money, along side fishing, woodcutting and killing monsters.

[edit] Smithing

Main article: Smithing

That ore that you mined is useless unless you do something with it. Talk to the Smelting Tutor, who is around the furnace in northern Lumbridge. You will be able to smelt the copper and tin ores into a bronze bar.

[edit] Questing

Main article: Quest

Another favourite pastime in RuneScape are Quests. Quests are a group of interrelated tasks. There are short ones and long ones, but here are a few that are recommended to new players. Most Quests give some reward, such as coins, experience, items, or access to places and certain skills. Usually quests are started by talking to someone. You can find who that someone is by clicking on the quest name in the quest list, found on the right of the screen.

[edit] Cook's Assistant

Main article: Cooks Assistant

You have to help the Lumbridge Castle cook get ingredients for a cake.

Reward: Gives some Cooking experience and allows you to cook on the Lumbridge Castle range.

[edit] The Restless Ghost

Main article: The Restless Ghost

There is a ghost haunting the graveyard, and you must help it.

Reward: Gives some Prayer experience.

[edit] Rune Mysteries

Main article: Rune Mysteries

The secret of the rune-stones will be revealed!

Reward: Gives access to the Runecrafting skill and an air talisman.

[edit] Sheep Shearer

Main article: Sheep Shearer

Help a farmer shear his sheep.

Reward: Gives some coins and some Crafting experience.

[edit] Witch's Potion

Main article: Witch's Potion

Help make a potion to tap into your "darker side".

Reward: Gives some Magic experience.

[edit] Monster Hunting

This is an activity done mostly by higher levelled players. This is because only at higher levels do monsters drop anything of great value. However, combat experience can be gained, so this is an important thing to do.

Combat in RuneScape is very unique. There are three styles, Magic, Melee, and Ranged. These are at opposing points in the "Combat Triangle". Ranged is strong against Magic, Magic is strong against Melee, and Melee is strong against Ranged. For more information, see these articles.

When starting, melee is recommended, because you do not have to constantly buy ammunition.

Here are some monsters to hunt.

[edit] Chickens (Level 1)

Main article: Chicken

Chickens are found in the chicken coop in the Lumbridge farm, north of Lumbridge Castle. They drop bones, which can be buried for prayer experience, chicken meat, which can be cooked and eaten, and feathers, which can be sold. Because feathers stack (they only take up 1 inventory space), it is easy to get a good amount and sell them.

[edit] Cows (Level 2)

Main article: Cow

Cows can be found just north of the border gate to Al Kharid. They drop bones, raw beef, and cowhide. You can cook this beef on a range of fire to heal yourself, or sell the beef. The best way to make money is to and take the cowhide, as it can be sold on the Grand Exchange for quite high. Cowhides can also be tanned in Al karid for a fee. You can use tanned hides for crafting. You can also bury the bones for prayer exp or sell them as well.

[edit] Goblins (Level 2, 5)

Main article: Goblin

Goblins have a fair amount of hitpoints, and are therefore good for training. They usually drop bones and another low-value item, such as some coins or some runes.

[edit] Death In RuneScape

Main article: Death

RuneScape is an adventure, and adventures can be dangerous. There are probably times when you will die.

When you die you keep your 3 most valuable items and the rest are put under a gravestone and you respawn. If you make it to the grave stone before it collapses, you can get all of your items back. You can buy better gravestones which will last for a longer time in the Lumbridge graveyard. To buy a better grave, complete the Restless Ghost quest and talk to father Aereck in the Lumbridge Church.

[edit] Interacting with other players

1. RuneScape has a very active and diverse community. If you need help, the easiest thing to do is ask another player very nicely if they could directly help you or point you in the right direction.

  • Do not beg for items or otherwise annoy other players, doing so is good way to start a fight and be no better off than you were alone.
  • If you believe another player is violating the rules or being unnecessarily offensive to you, the report abuse button can be used to submit an abuse report to Jagex. Please review the Rules so you know what a real violation is and how to accurately use the report system.
  • Do not report someone because they called you a noob. There are many kinds of people playing the game, and not all are helpful. Only report someone if they have openly broken a rule.

2. Accessing your friend and ignore list is as simple as clicking the green man with the thumbs up, or the red man with his hand in the way on your task bar.

  • From either of these menus you can add or remove users from these lists, and from your friends menu you can have a conversation with other friends also playing RuneScape.

3. Scams are much less common since the introduction of the grand exchange and trade limitations. But still, always be aware of your situation and use common sense when it comes to your password and recovery questions.

  • Jagex will never ask for your password or information in game or in an e-mail ever.
  • If you believe a player is a scammer or is attempting to get you to tell them your password, be sure to add that person to your ignore list and use the report feature.

[edit] Where to go from here

Finishing a few quests and doing a few jobs for NPCs around Lumbridge will hopefully familiarise you with almost all the skills and game basics as well as putting some money in your pocket. Finding new quests to do, levelling your characters combat and other skills, exploring new areas (such as Falador and Edgeville), and buying/crafting more advanced gear will come naturally and hopefully start to show you what fun RuneScape really is. If you have questions about anything, the official RuneScape game guide [1] is a good place to start or you could always join the RuneScape Wikia clan chat channel "R S Wikia" and ask someone for help there.
