The set of Lumberjack clothing is dropped in pieces by Undead Lumberjacks in the Temple Trekking activity. Lumberjack clothing, when worn, gives extra Woodcutting experience for cutting logs. This includes experience gained from chopping ivy. However, this does not include experience from the Distraction and Diversion, Evil Tree. Level 44 Woodcutting is required to wear Lumberjack clothing. The pieces of Lumberjack clothing are as follows:
Each piece of Lumberjack clothing worn raises the amount of Woodcutting experience earned per log by a certain amount, but there is an additional bonus when wearing the whole set.
The individual bonuses are as follows:
- Lumberjack top + 0.8%
- Lumberjack legs + 0.6%
- Lumberjack hat + 0.4%
- Lumberjack boots + 0.2%
This adds up to a total bonus of 2.0%. However, a total of 2.5% experience is given for the entire set, so wearing the entire set gives an additional bonus of 0.5%. A full lumberjack set can be stored in the armour case in the Costume Room of a player-owned house.
When using the whole set, the experience per log can be calculated by using the formula , rounding to the nearest tenth of an experience point.
Obtaining
Lumberjack clothing is obtained during the Temple Trekking activity. One of the events players may encounter during Temple Trekking is an area where there is a broken bridge. This event is where the clothing can be obtained. In this event, undead lumberjacks may come out of the water. They drop planks, which can be used to repair the bridge, but they can also drop pieces of the Lumberjack set. No more than one piece can be obtained from each event, but a player can get the same piece more than once. A player going for the Lumberjack set should kill the undead lumberjacks until they drop a piece, and then continue across the bridge. The undead lumberjacks appear one at a time, but there is a break of one minute after three appears. Note: do not log off because you would be restarted
The fastest way to obtain a set of Lumberjack clothing involves taking any person through Route One (the easiest route). This enables the player to skip past most combat events. In addition, the player should carry Slayer rings or Kharyrll Teleport runes to teleport out of the Bog event, and possibly also the sick people event, due to the time these events take.
Mod Mat K confirms that the lumberjack top is the rarest piece of the lumberjack set.
For profit while going for Lumberjack clothing, a player can kill the Swamp Snakes encountered and sell the obtained hides for profit. Players must bring a knife to harvest the hides; using the Protect from Melee prayer while fighting the snakes may be recommended. Nail beast nails are used in Herblore and can be profitable as well; however, the Nail Beast Charms are the real prize, giving over 1k Summoning XP when turned into pouches. Many players choose to play out these two encounters. After having completed an encounter it is best to take the evade path rather than continuing the trek as this increases chances of more encounters before the trip's end, but this will have an adverse affect on the reward offered for the trek. The value of the reward tokens given at the conclusion of the trek can be increased slightly by using the hard NPCs instead of the easy or medium NPCs.
All of the Lumberjack items can be obtained on any of the routes, although it is possible that the pieces have different probabilities of being dropped on the different routes.
The Lumberjack top is the hardest to get of the four pieces. This has been confirmed by Mod Mat K on RuneScape Forums[1]. It seems that the relative rarity of each of the four pieces is proportional to the bonus Woodcutting experience that they provide; the top is the rarest with an 0.8% individual bonus, and the boots seem to be the most common with a 0.2% bonus. After the update to Temple Trekking all of the lumberjack clothes were given higher chance of being dropped.
Players who already own a complete set of Lumberjack clothing will find that the undead lumberjacks no longer drop more pieces. In order to obtain multiple lumberjack sets, bring all copies of one piece on the trek, and drop them when undead lumberjacks appear. This allows them to drop another piece of the set. Be sure to pick up the ones you dropped before they disappear. (The monster drops in the event will not disappear over time unless the player logs out, but items the player drops will disappear over time as usual.)
Usefulness
The usefulness of the Lumberjack clothing is highly debated. Depending on the goal the woodcutter is aiming for, generally, the difficulty in obtaining all four pieces outweighs the benefits. Assuming the goal is from level 44 to 99 (roughly 13,000,000 experience points), 2.5% roughly works out to 325,000 experience. With an estimated 80,000 experience per hour by chopping ivy, the Lumberjack clothing can only save four hours of woodcutting. However, the chance of obtaining a full set of Lumberjack clothing in four hours is quite low, as one is very likely to get duplicate pieces. Some players have reported only obtaining the full set after 10 hours of play. Hence, some players regard the lumberjack clothing as worthwhile only for aesthetic purposes, unless the goal is to gain very high Woodcutting experience (for example, 200,000,000).
However, the above analysis mainly applies to players who are only interested in gain Woodcutting experience. Some players regard Temple Trekking as a fun and rewarding activity in itself, in which case getting a set of Lumberjack clothing is seen as a bonus. Some other players find training Woodcutting to be tedious, so acquiring Lumberjack clothing helps them gain Woodcutting experience on the occasions where they need to train it (such as levelling up to qualify for a quest).
Trivia
- The description for the clothes reads, "You'll certainly be alright wearing these", referring to The Lumberjack Song. The clothes themselves look just like those that the typical lumberjack (played by Michael Palin) wears.
- On the first day of release, there was a glitch where players were not able to receive the boots as a drop. It was much easier to get the other clothing pieces before this was fixed, as Lumberjack boots are now the most common piece of the set.
- In the past, Lumberjack clothing failed to apply its bonus XP when chopping ivy. This has been fixed.
