Music in RuneScape is mostly in-game background music. As of 10 November 2009, there are 613 music tracks available via music player. Music is used to enhance a player's gaming experience.

Players need to unlock most tracks during game-play by going to a particular place, completing a quest, or performing some action (such as reading a particular book).

Unlocking 500 songs will unlock the Air Guitar emote, which plays six notes when activated. It is notable for being one of the few emotes with audio (the enchanced Beckon emote, when played while wearing the Builder's costume, makes the player "whistle"; the Halloween Trick emote makes a "spooky" sound; the Christmas Freeze and Melt emote makes a crackling noise; the Easter Around the World in Eggty Days emote makes a magical "whoosh" sound; and the Quest cape emote plays a quick song).

The Music Player lists all tracks, with the titles of unlocked tracks shown in green, and those of locked tracks displayed in red.

As of 18 March 2008, the music system now has a counter which keeps 'track' of how many songs you've unlocked. As of 09 April the music counter had a bug, where it read 1 number higher than the actual songs unlocked. For new accounts the newbie list is 20 songs, but the counter reads 21; those who had unlocked all 549 songs have a counter reading 550 as of 11 June 2008.

On 3 April 2008, Mod Mark stated that a fix for the aforementioned bug has already been written and is currently in testing. Along with that, he also revealed that the counter will also show the maximum number of songs. For example, a player with all tracks unlocked would see "Unlocked: 529/529" on his or her music player.

On 9 April 2008, Mod Mark stated that the counter fix is still in the pipeline and that there is a queue so even very small updates can take a while to complete. No specific date has been given for the release of the fix.

On 1 July 2008, with the release of the RuneScape HD update, the music counter currently shows the total number of tracks: "Unlocked: 550/549". However, it still contains a bug where it shows 1 track higher than the actual number of tracks unlocked. In addition, the Music Player is now translucent and much smaller when opened in Full-screen mode.

On 14 July 2008, with the release of the Bank Update and Item Lending, the counter was finally fixed, showing the correct number of songs unlocked.

On 9 June 2009, musicians were introduced to RuneScape, and can be listen to to increase hitpoints and run energy restore rates. These musicians can be found all over RuneScape.

• The 500th Track was Tournament! (m) which was released on 20 November 2007.
• Scape Theme is used for the opening music track, except when a Holiday event is going on. Scape Scared for Hallowe'en, and Scape Santa is used for Christmas. Other Scapes may be used for new skills, such as Scape Summon for the release of Summoning, or Scape Hunter for the release of Hunter. Scape Main (The Previous log in screen theme) Is now available in the Track List.
• The track Zanik's Theme is heard during a cutscene in Death to the Dorgeshuun, but is not unlocked until Land of the Goblins.
• For Bolrie's Diary, it is not enough to just read the book, a player must also read any chapter to open the cut scene in order to unlock music - The Path of Glouphrie quest.
• During Clarence's burial cut scene after the Back to my Roots quest, the music being played does not appear in the music title; so this would be a missing song. The song "Historic Memories" from Meeting History is also played in a cutscene, but cannot be unlocked.
• Long ago the default music track at Barbarian Village was "Dark", but it has been changed to "Barbarianism". The "Dark" track was moved to Sulphur vents south of Bone Yard (located south of the caves of Chaos Dwarves; level 32 Wilderness).

• Victory is Mine - requires one of the extremely rare Challenge Scrolls in order to fight in the Champion's Challenge
• Any song in Master-level quests - songs found in quests such as Monkey Madness, Mourning's Ends Part II (La Mort), Desert Treasure, Recipe for Disaster and especially While Guthix Sleeps often take a lot of effort to unlock.
• Any song requiring a high skill level (such as the songs in the God Wars Dungeon).

• On 4 June 2007, Jagex renamed Gnome to Goblin Village and Gnome Theme to Dwarf Theme.
• At a later date, Jagex also renamed Wolf Mountain to Wild Isle.
• Scape Summon - The main tune during the Summoning Update on 15 January 2008 was deleted from music log with an Update on 5 February 2008, although it continued to play on the Summoning loading and login screen. It was a bug which Jagex reports on their site:
  • "Audio > Subcategory:" Added By: mod_clark on 5 February 2008. "The ScapeSummon track has done a runna! We are aware of this and will hunt it down and secure it with big 'stop running away chains' - in the meantime it is an issue that we are aware of and there is no need to report it.'".

[edit] Warriors' Guild

• Either having one level 99 or a combined total of 130 levels (minimum) is required in Attack and Strength to be able to enter the Warriors' Guild in Burthorpe.
• Since a player requires level 70 Strength (for unlocking Bandos' Stronghold in the Bandos Stronghold), the minimum for Attack has been set at 60, however 99 Strength alone would work for both music tracks.
• It is up to the player how they wish to obtain the necessary required levels of Attack and Strength.

There is a number of music tracks that can be connected to the real world, both through the name and/or the music itself. These include (alphabetically):

• A New Menace - The two Star Wars movies 'A New Hope' and 'The Phantom Menace'
• All's Fairy in Love and War - The saying 'All is fair in love and war'
• Aye Car Rum Ba - An expression of disbelief, notably used by Bart Simpson- 'ay caramba!'
• Beetle Juice - The 1988 movie with the same name
• The Cellar Dwellers - The band with the same name, or the 1988 movie 'Cellar Dweller'
• Charmin' Farmin' - The song sounds like a modified version of the child's song 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm'
• Cool for Ali Cats - The song 'Cool For Cats' by Squeeze. The use of 'Ali' is a reference to the fact the almost every one in Pollnivneach is called Ali, but also alludes to the idea of an 'Alley Cat'.
• Copris Lunaris - A type of Scarab beetle (Horned dung beetle)
• Corridors of Power - The book by C. P. Snow
• Dance of Death - The song by Iron Maiden with the same name
• Davy Jones' Locker - Pirate slang for the bottom of the sea (which is where the song is unlocked)
• Dead Can Dance - The Australian band with the same name
• Dillo-gence is Key - The saying 'Diligence is the key'
• Dream Theatre - British spelling of the band 'Dream Theater'
• Eruption - A song by the band 'Van Halen'
• Faithless - The band with the same name
• Fangs For The Memory - The song 'Thanks for the Memories' originally released in 1938 and covered several times since
• The Far Side - The one-panel comic created by Gary Larson
• Fe Fi Fo Fum - Part of the line the giant says during the fairytale about Jack and the Beanstalk

• Little Cave of Horrors - The film and musical 'Little Shop of Horrors'
• Long Way Home - The 1997 movie 'The Long Way Home'
• Lore and Order - The television series 'Law and Order'
• Major Miner - The antonyms 'major' and 'minor'
• Neverland - The homeworld of Peter Pan, written by James M. Barrie
• Night of the Vampyre - The movie(s) 'Night of the Living Dead'
• Norse Code - The communication method Morse code
• Out Of The Deep - The song 'Out from the Deep' by Enigma
• Overture - An instrumental composition, such as the famous William Tell Overture.
• Penguin Possible - The song sounds like a modified version of the Mission Impossible theme.
• Pinball Wizard - A reference to a highly skilled Pinball Player, a song was also released with the same name, "Pinball Wizard" by The Who. The song also sounds like the song played during the 'pinball' sequence on Sesame Street
• Pirates of Penance - The Gilbert and Sullivan musical 'Pirates of Penzance'
• Roc and Roll - The expression 'Rock and Roll(!)'
• Roll the Bones - The song by Rush with the same name
• Romancing the Crone - The 1984 film 'Romancing the Stone'
• The Route of All Evil - The biblical expression '(love of money is the) root of all evil'

• In the music 'Norse Code' (playing while in Jatizso), the high pitch flute plays the Morse code letters for 'RuneScape'. The short notes are the dits and the long notes are the dahs: dit-dah-dit R, dit-dit-dah U, dah-dit N, dit E, dit-dit-dit S, dah-dit-dah-dit C, dit-dah A, dit-dah-dah-dit P, dit E.
• All's Fairy in Love and War contains the same initial four chords as the Mortal Kombat Theme.
• Armadyl Alliance is unlocked before the gap to Armadyl's area in God Wars Dungeon, so 70 Ranged is not needed.
• 10 music tracks begin with the word "Scape", and 3 end with "Scape": Ground Scape, Homescape, and Soundscape.
• Many songs can be unlocked just standing very near about the area of the specific song, and is not necessary have all requirements.
• There used to be a glitch where when you walked into Draynor Village, 'Narnode's Theme', a members only song, would unlock. This has been fixed.
• Dark (unlocked in the Clan Wars lobby) and Intrepid (unlocked during the Underground Pass quest) sound very similar to each other.
• Playing Clan Wars while waiting for a clan war to begin causes a different track to play.
• Some music tracks can, for some reason, be unlocked without visiting the area or even getting close to it, such as the music track on Dragontooth Island is unlockable for free-to-play players even though they had never been members before.
• The songs Legion (Lobby), Principality (Misthalin Map), TzHaar! (Desert Map), Poles Apart (Snow Map) and Attack 1-6 (In Battle) can be heard on the FunOrb game: Armies of Gielinor.
• The song Life's a Beach! can be heard on the Mos'Le Harmless arena on the FunOrb Game: Arcanists.
• If a player stands up from resting, another track will start.
• When unlocking the hint for the song "Animal Apogee" it says This track was unlocked during Wolf Whistle, but it can also be unlocked near the mini obelisk at the end of the Underground Pass quest.
• When unlocking the hint for the track "Eruption", it will say "This track unlocks default info." This has been fixed, however.
• The song Dragontooth Island is available to free players after the Defender of Varrock Quest.
