Lava strykewyrm icon

Lava strykewyrms are strykewyrms found exclusively in the Wilderness, south of the Lava Maze. They require level 94 Slayer to kill and can be assigned by Kuradal and Morvran. Unlike their other cousins where a slayer task is required to harm them, Lava strykewyrms can be killed off-task. However, this will reduce their drop rates for their component drops. They are a reincarnation of the original WildyWyrms.

Lava strykewyrms can drop wyrm spikes, scalps and hearts, which can be used with abyssal whips, dark bows, or staves of light respectively to create the lava whip, strykebow, and the staff of darkness. They also drop searing ashes, which give 200 prayer experience when scattered.

The fastest way to reach lava strykewyrms is by using the lava titan's interact ability to teleport directly; you will be teleported right outside the entrance of the Lava Maze, where there are lava strykewyrms nearby, though you will need to go to a nearby cape seller to access your bank to switch it for a BoB. The Wilderness obelisks are also a good choice; the level 35/44 obelisks are not far from the lava strykewyrms. You can also use the Wilderness sword to teleport to the herb patch, or use a waka canoe to enter the Wilderness and run west from there.

If the player is killing lava strykewyrms for a Slayer assignment then they can gain 20% additional Slayer experience by equipping a demonic skull. They can gain another 20% extra experience per kill if they accept a special slayer contract from Erskine while assigned lava strykewyrms as a Slayer task. These experience bonuses stack, meaning the player may gain 40% extra Slayer experience. Completing a special slayer contract rewards the player with a choice of coins or combat experience.

The lava strykewyrms' location is a PVP-enabled area, meaning it is possible for other players to attack you while there. Do not bring equipment that you are not willing to lose. If players are attacked, there are plenty of areas to escape their assailant, as they are relatively close to the level 30 Wilderness line, the King Black Dragon's lair and the Forinthry Dungeon.

MechanicsEdit

A wyrm initially appears as a mound on the ground. Before combat can be initiated with the wyrm, the mound must be investigated, like any other strykewyrm mound. This action causes the wyrm to burst out of the ground and attack the player who investigated the mound. It should be noted that while killing lava strykewyrms, a much stronger strykewyrm can spawn in its place (it comes with a world announcement); however, the chances of that happening are rather low.

Lava strykewyrms attack players immediately upon the mound being investigated, due to their stun immunity. When in melee range, the wyrms use magic and melee attacks and when attacked from a distance they will use magic and ranged attacks. The wyrm's ranged and melee attacks can be avoided; in the case of its ranged attack, moving far enough away from where the projectile strikes will suffice; if the projectile lands just as the player starts moving, it will hit the player. The melee attack can be avoided by simply moving out of melee range before damage can be calculated.

Prayer flicking is advised when fighting lava strykewyrms, as they deal considerably more damage than other strykewyrms. The primary prayer that should be used is Protect/Deflect Magic, as their magic attack has no delay and does very high damage compared to their ranged attack, which has a small delay and deals less damage.

Like all strykewyrms, lava strykewyrms can burrow to attack. However, unlike their cousins, they have two forms of burrowing attack:

  • The traditional burrow attack, where the strykewyrm observes the player's position, burrows to that spot and then bursts out of the ground. This attack is used if the player is in an open area. If there is something near the player (e.g. a tree, rocks etc.), or if the strykewyrm itself is blocked by obstacles, it will be unable to use this attack.
  • A unique burrow attack, where the strykewyrm will look at the player's position and drag them to the mound (the screen will also shake when this happens). The strykewyrm will then burst out from the ground. This attack is used regardless of what is around the player or the wyrm, provided that they are within 6 spaces of each other. Using Freedom or Anticipation will prevent the player from being dragged.

If the player is hit by either burrow attack they will lose 50% of their current lifepoints as damage and their protection prayers/deflection curses will be disabled for a short duration. If the strykewyrm cannot perform either burrow attack, it will continue attacking the player as normal. However, it is possible the strykewyrm will attempt to burrow, only to realize that it can't and it will then be unable to attack for a short time.

Moving under a lava strykewyrm whilst fighting it will instantly result in heavy damage to the player.

Unlike other strykewyrms which burrow back into the ground if the player hides from them, lava strykewyrms are continually aggressive towards the player and will not return to the ground unless the player moves too far away, logs out or is attacked by another monster/player.

TriviaEdit

  • Lava strykewyrms were originally supposed to be placed between the Lava Maze and Red Dragon Isle, but player complaints due to how deep it was in the Wilderness in addition to being a multi-way area changed it to south-west of the Lava Maze.
  • Initially, lava strykewyrms gave 1404 slayer experience per kill when assigned for a task. This was changed due to player complaints on the dangers of the Wilderness, their damaging attacks and the 50% damage reduction at the beginning of the fight, and they now give more Slayer experience than combat experience.
  • There was a glitch where if a player was assigned lava strykewyrms, even though the slayer master said "lava strykewyrms", players who quickchatted/blocked the task said WildyWyrms instead. This has since been fixed.
  • Prior to the Patch Notes on 2 March 2015, a player in combat with a lava strykewyrm would be unable to retaliate if attacked by another player. Additionally, neither Anticipate nor Freedom would be able to prevent the pull of a Lava strykewyrm's burrow attack.
  • Sometimes, a glitch can occur where the wyrm will stop attacking the player for a few seconds. This is due to the lava strykewyrm attempting to use its burrow attack but unable to as the player is too far to be dragged/the strykewyrm cannot burst from that location.
  • Lava strykewyrms used to have a 50% damage reduction at the start of the fight, which lasted for 10 seconds before it was removed. This reduction was removed with a hidden update.
