Jas is an Elder God, one of the ancient beings responsible for the creation of the universe, including Gielinor itself[1]. She is described by a TokHaar-Hok as "...time, and so time passes. She is sand, and so there is desert."[2] This suggests that if Jas represents a specific theme, as is common among gods and goddesses, she is the Elder God of Time. In addition to the roles she played in shaping the universe, Jas is specifically responsible for creating the Stone of Jas, an Elder Artefact that "most purely expressed her power," and one that has played a prominent role in Gielinor's history. She also created and enslaved the dragonkin, binding them to the Stone, in order to prevent its power from being misused.

The Elder Gods shaped many worlds throughout the universe, each time improving their designs with the assistance of the Elder Artefacts, including the Elder Kiln. After creating Gielinor, meant to be their final and most perfect creation, the Elder Gods "lay down upon their perfect world" and "[spoke] no more [to the TokHaar-Hok]." This suggests that the Elder Gods did not depart from Gielinor after creating it, but instead remain on it, either sleeping or deceased.

Kerapac, a dragonkin and the creator of the Queen Black Dragon, announces his intention to destroy Jas in the fourth dragonkin journal.

TriviaEdit

  • JAS is a real-life acronym which stands for Java Application Server, the application that drives RuneScape's game engine. This may sarcastically imply the importance of Jas.
  • In the fifth Postbag from the Hedge, the letter to the Chaos Elemental reads "Chaos Soahc, Jas. Hello?
  • Jas' attributes of being "Time" and "Sand" may be a reference to the "Sands of Time", a mythical representation of the eternal passing of time.
  • Jas was previously referred to as Male, being referred to as "His" and "He" in the Dragonkin journals. However, the Fight Cauldron Bookcase, released a year later, referred to her as female. The references to Jas being male in the Dragonkin journals were changed shortly after the bookcase was discovered, but Jas is still referred to as male in the While Guthix Sleeps quest journal.
